Oops i listened to this one a bit late haha You might have to create a "The Closet Historian pattern makes xyz better than Truly Victorian" set of videos. I'd love to see how you would pattern make your own version and what changes you would make for it to suit you better

I've never seen any of the Star Wars saga.

Ooohhh you are going down that passion rabbit hole which is something I am familiar with and it always bites me…. I’ve absolutely loved all your content for a long time so please take care of yourself ❤️. Omg Andor is awesome ! My husband and I are so into it!

I don't know how you do it all. I honestly should give you more money. I "save"your videos for a special reward. I so look forward to them. Please though, go easy on yourself. You are really nailing things. Your art is shining. Enjoy the bustle. It's fun sometimes to get a little adrenaline rush from being anxious AND busy. Haha I so look forward to the look books. Best wishes. Enjoy yourself. Also, thank you for being such a good example of being morally aware.

Florence and the Machine?! I am so jealous! Please tell us what you wear to the concert!! Thank you for sharing your information on the Truly Victorian situation. I really do love that you are going Edwardian, which is how I would dress all the time if I could. I love what you are going to do with your set. Have you thought about using 4’ x 8’ sheets of cardboard for some of your set work? To save money, make it recyclable and easy to change up? If you make stuff like a New Orleans lamp post out of cardboard, which you can use butcher paper or just brown paper to cover over if you need to smooth out the texture, then faux paint - you can really reduce your budget. Obviously for things that don’t need to take too much weight. I knew an incredible award winning costumer from the Northwest who made 100% of his giant monsters and ornate armor out of pizza boxes and free cutlery that came with the pizza. And duct tape. You could hold it in your hands and swear it was leather, or metal or monster skin. I also worked for a display company that was pretty low budget. Masking tape can help a lot too. I was especially thinking of making “wrought iron” using the cardboard paper and tape method. You could make it New Orleans/Haunted Mansion with bat shapes and spiderwebs in the ‘iron’. Good memories from my days of making decor and props for Bill Nye the Science Guy/ Microsoft Halloween Parties / Wizards of the Coast Christmas Party(a lifesize Halloween Town/Christmas Town - though that was also a lot of foam carving).

Thank you Thea! Florence was amazing! I did catch a cold since then though, so perhaps being out amongst the populace wasn't the best idea 😅 With big set pieces, I like to make them out of pink foam becuase they are easy to store and use again. I still have my Star Wars set from a few years ago and I am going to repaint and re-dress it for a new lookbook this winter which should be fun! How I will get all my set pieces to the northeast when I find a house though....I don't know 😅

I'm very glad to know that about Costume College, because now I have no interest in going, and that is a lot of money and effort (and angst) saved.

Hopefully better and safer events will arise in the future!

I was wondering if you knew about the TV patterns racism…I appreciate you mentioning it here and can understand why you don’t want to get involved inadvertently but I also hope you plan to mention in the video you put out in the end for the 1900s costume why it became 1900s rather than 1890s. (Even if you don’t name names I’m sure your POC viewers would appreciate your allyship) Anyhoo. I love the Edwardian era and so few costumers do that time period…I can’t wait to see what you make!!

T
The Closet Historian · October 1, 2022

Thank you Mary! I will definitely mention that I will not be using TV moving forward and can no longer recommend them in the video, so that others can avoid them for the same reason if they wish. Hopefully folks will still enjoy a little more freeform Edwardian gown 😅🦇

I like Andor too! Mandalorian had such stinker episodes and even Andor's writing is secondary to the special effects, I still like it better.

You’ve a lot on your plate and I admire your moral conscience. You are very self-aware. 🥰 On a lighter note, I like the (New Orleans, was it?) street with brickworks vibe you’re going for on the set. I can imagine an old fashioned popcorn machine, maybe an organ grinder with a little monkey. Oh dear the imagination is running away! As a double Mercury (Gemini/Virgo) I am looking forward to this weekend. Enough with the retrograde already! So maybe that will help with your schedule. PS the lady who named your little pumpkin buddy made a great choice. I was like, “Leonard, yes that fits!” 😅🎃

T
The Closet Historian · October 1, 2022

Thank you Penny! I'm excited to put the set together soon! I've even carved a few new pumpkin buddies to have about which will be fun! 🎃

I look forward to your posts here and on YouTube so much, but sometimes being a social butterfly is good for the soul. Make sure you're taking care of yourself too. I'll wait for a post I promise. I completely agree with on Truly Victorian. I do not support companies that I know have views that are harmful to anyone. There are so many of them unfortunately. I love all your ideas. I would love a pretty flowy dressing gown. I am a huge fan of being able to binge shows. Like reading it's a mental health break for me.

T
The Closet Historian · October 1, 2022

Thank you Laura! I can draft historic patterns by draping, it is just harder to explain/demo which will push me to be a better "teacher" anyhow so it's probably goo for me!

Luna Wolfbane · September 30, 2022

Just to state the obvious; it's YOUR calendar and you can juggle it, move it things about and even cancel things if you want! Happy Halloween!

I wish, tell that to anxious me, she's demanding 😅 I haven't missed a weekly video in a long time, and it's not gonna be during spooky month!! Luckily I have a London vacation to look forward to next year where I will fully recharge ❤

Please don't burn out. I think if you would even make a short video or a teaser for one or more weeks would be enough. You could also just make a pattern for yourself and use it in the video and then make another video later in the year (or next year) where you would show how to draft it (or make it a patreon exclusive, who wants it will pay, who doesn't can still go to truly victorian). IMHO Victorian shapes are quite different from what we are used in the modern day. Also, from what I saw in modern drafting books and 100+ years old drafting books, they also seem to fit better. Like, there are more curves where the modern ones seem to be more straight lines. Probably to make it easier and also that most of our modern materials are stretchy.

T
The Closet Historian · October 1, 2022

Thank you ❤ I promise I take breaks to snuggle my cats! I think some of the Victorian patterns/extant examples being more curvy thing has to do with modern corsetry also. Both that women were corseted consistently from a younger age then, and that the corsets were better than they usually are now. I know I could get a much curvier corseted shape from a different corset pattern, or a couture custom corset, but as I don't do a /ton/ of costuming I haven't yet invested in such ✨

Uncertainty is definitely not my friend either. Your end of year plan is ambitious, and it sounds like a good balance of exciting sewing room projects and some good social events! I’m currently working on a dress much like your late spiky-neckline dress, with a matching pointed belt to wear to a friend’s wedding in a month. I know I’ll be exhausted, because it involves traveling within Europe, but i’ll be wearing a great black, bat vibes outfit~~ and it all helps. Sending much energy to you for the next few weeks🖤

T
The Closet Historian · October 1, 2022

Thank you Nuria! A black batty vibed outfit always helps in any situation!! I hope you have a great time 🦇

I don't think any of us would mind if you gave yourself more breaks. Better to miss the occasional video than burn out. Tell scheduling you to be kinder 😆

T
The Closet Historian · October 1, 2022

Scheduling me knows no human boundaries, has no concept of time, and wishes only for perfection 😂

Susanfuzz · September 30, 2022

My schedule for 1-9 October is working the morning shift at our quilt guild’s Balloon Fiesta booth. I made the raffle quilt, so that is my doom. I’ll be the one with the skull earrings :) Oh by the way, I have to get up at 3:15. AM. 😭 It’s kinda fun, but SOOOOO many people. It’s a panic inducing crowd, so I stay in the tent. I got me some fresh bivalent booster and flu shot, just in case. In other news, my pumpkin love (I am honored to name them, thank you) is named Leonard.

T
The Closet Historian · September 30, 2022

Leonard! Very exciting! I made him a few more friends this morning. 🎃 I have to say I often finally fall asleep at around 3:15 in the morning, so that as a wake up hour sounds /not/ good to me 😅 That is wild early! Good work on the boosters, I want one too, maybe I'll see if I can snag one tomorrow somehow on my way back across town ❤
