Thank You!

To say I am blown away by all of the support would be a massive understatement. I really can't believe it!

Thank you so incredibly much for choosing to support me here on Patreon. Your overwhelming support has really lifted a weight off of my shoulders. I have been hard at work planning out the next few months of projects for the channel and had been trying to figure out how I could possibly do it all, and now it's all so much more possible!

I spent most of this week focusing on updating the Etsy shop with new listings, and then started making the bolero and skirt set seen here. This is the same design seen in a taupey brown mini houndstooth (with a shorter puff sleeve version of the bolero in that case) in a few of my look books. I have had many questions about the asymmetric skirt before, so I wanted to make sure I showed everyone how to draft one. The video for this project will be coming to YouTube next week!

Though unfortunately that video may be a bit delayed from my usual Monday upload, as my set will not be accessible to me all day Sunday due to the Superbowl! The perils of having your set in the family rec room, and a sewing room/recording studio behind some big speakers where a very well copyright protected NFL game will be blasting. Of course I didn't plan ahead properly, seeing as I never keep track of sports and had no clue the big game was this weekend! I'm afraid the boys get the basement this Sunday, so the video may not come out until Tuesday. I'd rather do it right and have the video out a day late though.

I'm still not exactly sure if I want to do this project all in one long video or break it into three videos like I did for the Luke Skywalker dress project. Breaking it up actually resulted in fewer clicks overall, but some people really seemed to like having the separate videos, so now I'm not sure which is best!

Which do you all prefer, the mega long videos or the three separate review, patterning, and then sewing videos?

As for other upcoming projects, I'll be teasing things here as fabric arrives from Mood. Let's just say I have a lot of blue on my sewing table just now! As for the first Patreon exclusive pattern drafting video coming up on February 20th, it's a fun project for an upcoming Blade Runner themed lookbook, but that's all I'll say for now! I'll have a separate post where we can discuss your most wanted pattern drafting desires soon too so give it a think. I do have the basic blocks from scratch video coming up on the channel already so that's in the works!

Thank you again for joining me here on Patreon, I really cannot describe how much I appreciate your support <3

You'll hear from me again soon, have a great weekend!

Finally joined your patreon community! So happy to support you!

I am so happy to be able to help out even in a small way. On a different topic, I thought this opinion piece from Brit Marling in the NYT on the female tropes in stories (be they film or books) would be of interest to you. For me, she articulates something I have felt lacking in female portrayals but heretofore have been unable to pinpoint. https://t.co/Svbg1jDyCW

Thank you for bringing that piece to my attention, I liked it of course! The two main characters in the novel I've been working on are both young women who are very strong and perhaps occasionally also "strong women". It's interesting to look at them now in the context of stereotypes and in a what-would-the-casting-call description say way, because I didn't think of that sorta thing at all when writing the book of course, I just wrote them as they came to me in the moment for each scene and their personalities naturally occurred. For example I have a young woman who's a self described "sea rat" (she grew up on a cargo ship) who's a total tomboy in many ways I guess, there are a lot of traditionally "masculine" things about her like her swearing and smoking and generally being rather "one of the guys", but I never did that on purpose, she just kinda occurred and now I can ascribe those labels afterwards now that I'm thinking about it. I guess traditionally in Hollywood maybe they would cast her as a more say Lara Croft hot girl so she would still be desirable to the male audience. Of course that's not how she is at all, shes lanky and twitchy, often nervous, and queer, but it's interesting to think, "huh, what would all those male directors/producers do with this character". She may often come off as one of the guys, but she's also a really great caregiver with children, which is of course considered traditionally an almost exclusively feminine trait (until more recently perhaps) and she's actually very fragile even if she say, knows how to take apart and reassemble a handgun too. I like to think both of the leads in the work are strong because they are resilient, observant and clever, are brave and loyal and caring, not because they have physical strength or much power over others in their society or anything. I hope I am writing "complex female characters" of course, but then again, as I am a woman myself perhaps it would almost be harder not to! Thanks for getting me thinking, I love the medium of film too, so this sorta discussion is right up my street :)

I'm not much on commenting, but I honestly use both formats, depending on if I'm actually making the item in question.

Hey, I like the separated videos. Lately I did not have the time to watch your videos (or videos at all) but I catch up on all of them regularly. I really appreciate the high quality of your videos. I am really happy that I can support you even more. And I am very curious about your writings.

Love whatever length works for everyone else. I do prefer the long ones, and if i need to tend to something before i’m finished, i just hit “pause” and can come back to it at a later time.

I watch your videos while soaking in the bath - as I am doing now, during the super bowl. Glad I can support you; I really enjoy your content. Love ALL the look books!!

I love the longer vids. :) Would you mind doing a sewing room tour one day?

T
The Closet Historian · February 3, 2020

Thanks Franziska! I have indeed done a sewing room tour video before and I'm afraid not much has changed, you can see it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb-GppVJKBI&t=1s

I like the longer videos! Though I do like the bookmarking idea (I reference your zipper method a lot and I just keep skipping around trying to find it!). Also I would love an after making a block video - like I made it but what about tweaking the muslin and then how I remake it into a flat pattern. There is only one video on YT about it!

Hi, I second what Chae Howard said. Though regardless of long or short videos, I'll still be watching. This is really exciting being a part of Patreon with you. Your style of videos are easy to follow, easy to understand the process and I learn so much from them. I have to tell you that you've inspired me to 'try' drafting patterns from existing patterns I own. Still a work in progress but would never have even thought to do that without you. Warm wishes from Down Under xx

Chae Howard · February 2, 2020

While I like the longer videos, I will obviously watch the shorter ones. My opinion is do what you need to do to appease The Algorithm. It seems to like longer videos better (but one cannot truly understand The Algorithm). Maybe you could add some timecodes in the description for those who need/want to break it up.

i love the long videos, and even if i only have time to watch to certain point i do come back, it's a whole process neatly wrapped in one, but with shorter ones it took me way longer to actually start watching them? and then repeat that times 2, but honestly, i will watch anything from you, cause your content is great, and you always teach me something (i just love learning) and it's all very creative and fun

Hi! I'm stoked to be here, thank you for opening this page. I personally don't mind the longer videos ; I like to watch them to wind down and get inspired, and I value the insight you give us on your creative process. However, the length of them does mean I have to set aside special time to watch one, and sometimes I lose interest before having seen it. Taking that into consideration, I could see how shorter videos would result in more people seeing them, because they could be watched right as they come out.

Sarah O'Toole · February 1, 2020

I like the smaller videos, only because I don't have time to make the whole project at once. However, if the Tech Gods Above like the longer ones, I'd be content having date stamps in the description for key steps in the video.

Amanda Quintieri · February 1, 2020

I really love the mega long videos. I'll watch regardless, but there's just something about watching the whole thing in one video from start to finish. Also I completely messed up the viewing order for the Skywalker dress, so the long video is idiot proof, haha.

B
Bree · February 1, 2020

I am so happy to be able to support your endeavors! It looks like I may be the odd one out, but I like the shorter videos. It makes it easier for me to find a certain section or part within those videos when it comes to projects I may be working on. But, if the longer videos are easier for you to edit/shoot/what-have-you, I'm all for continuing on with the longer ones. Thank you for contributing what you do to the YouTube community and the vintage community!

Oohoooo I feel so special being here! My first and only patronisation. Bianca's my fave so 🤷‍♀️ Try not to put yourself down about the video maybe coming late, you work so hard and put out fantastic content, besides I doubt any of us here keep up with sports anyway! As for the videos, I personally like the long ones, but I imagine for less hardcore sewing junkies the short videos are better. I imagine making those other videos must create a whole load of extra work though, so if they're not paying off in terms of exposure stick with the original format.

M
Mandy-Jo · February 1, 2020

It’s a lot easier to digest the smaller videos since I really have to make time to watch the longer ones. I don’t know how much extra work goes into doing both formats, but maybe the smaller videos would make more sense as a Patreon exclusive? So happy to be able to support your endeavors!

Linnea Juul Sten · February 1, 2020

I've been waiting for so long to be able to support you - I'm thrilled to be part of the team! ❤️ Personally, I like the longer videos the best. It sometimes takes a little scheduling before I can properly watch all of it, but I always click straight away and save it in my browser for later. Your explanations are so thorough and I think it's a shame to break it up. Someone else mentioned time stamps and I think that's a good idea! It would also be easier to find specific parts of the video when I'm using them as guides for my own sewing 😀

I like the mega long videos too, I wonder if there could be...like...cards (pause here) for people who want to break things up!? Is that a thing? Anyway, happy to be here and look forward to everything as it comes. We won't stress over a day or two, we love the work and appreciate the quality and depth of your videos!

Hi Bianca, yes I like the long videos too. I am very happy to support you in your creative pursuits. It is so inspiring and even if I don’t have time to create myself always, I feel like I am actively learning from you. I really enjoyed the fabric structure ‘tutorial’ and I would like more of those please. Good luck with all the new stuff. Cheers. Lynn x
