An /actually/ summer goth Gunny Sax dress...
Because let's face it, the long sleeve one is for September days with a hint of fall's crispness emerging instead...
Goodness am I running behind as ever! Thank you for your support and endless patience ❤️

Guys! I had no where else to squeal with delight that I just got a mint condition 1949 - 99K sewing machine for 40 bucks in FB marketplace I am stoked! She looks brand new and hardly any wear and tear I was just cleaning and oiling her and she looked new She runs like a dream The box is a bit beat up but I guess someone got her as a gift and then she sat unused in her box for decades It even had the original booklet and some sewing machine needles from 1950 in the case Ugh! I am just thrilled! What should I name her?
This dress is GORGEOUS!!! Looks like something you would pay gobs of money for! BTW I like your blond streak and longer hair😁
Adorable! I love it! 😻
Thank you Wendy!
I think you have addressed this already but I am short waisted and adjust commercial patterns by one inch, removing the inch about halfway between the bustline and waistline. When I am drafting the bodice block, should I remove the inch at that time, or make the adjustment each time I draft a new pattern. Not sure why this confuses me?
Super cute dress ❤️
Thank you!
Thank you. As a child of the 70s and 80s, Gunne Sax / Jessica McClintock / Laura Ashley are close to my heart. I also own a 99k, and like using some of the other feet and the attachments ( to varying degrees of success: Automatic Buttonholer- brilliant; Automatic Zigzagger- only some of the patterns really work, so I end up using my modern plastic Janome for intricate zigzags / overlocking ) . Do you have / use any of those accessories?
I do use a buttonholer attachment (mine is from 1945 so it's 10 years older than my machine!), and I have a zig zag attachment that I received as a gift, but I have not actually had occasion to try it yet!
Loved it! Enjoyed watching your lace insertion additions. Would totally wear this one myself. I treated myself to some black suited irises and Dracula’s kiss irises a couple years ago. They’re lovely. A moon garden sounds so fun and would be so down for any garden content.
Thank you Ann! I need to learn how to plant bulbs, but then also, how to keep deer from eating them 😩
Lovely! And now I need a dress in Swiss Dot... And while looking for that fabric I came across a beautiful rather big white on black polkadot and now I have to make that dress first...
Thank you! A classic fabric browsing problem we have all certainly run into before...
It's a fabulous dress! When I first saw the reveal, my immediate thought was of Spanish flamenco style. I don't think your dress is actually flamenco, but to me it looks like it was inspired a bit by that aesthetic :) thank you for the video :)
Thank you Marta! Alas my skirt ruffle will see far less dancing (none) 😂
I remain in awe of your ability to make ruffles look elegant.
The black colorway is doing all of the work I promise!
I second the wish for a machine maintenance video and have been meaning to search your archives for a possible video about your machine - its history, your why’s and where for’s and general thoughts on machines. Realized I haven’t seen you use your serger and wonder if you keep it out of sight on purpose because it doesn’t fit the vibe of your delightful sewing space. Please don’t apologize in your videos; I come here for the ‘realness’ and like to see that normalized. I hate the slickness and packaged feel of some sewing and craft videos. Yours are like curling up with a genuine person who happens to have mad skills and a unique, wonderful personal style.
Thank you! I do have a cover over my serger, it lives under a wooden box most of the time because it's simply not attractive and indeed doesn't fit the vibe! The Singer 99K machine came into my life in 2020, and I have never looked back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PvYKq_GM7w&t=58s
you really don't have to worry about sticking to a schedule, especially if it's causing you so much inner turmoil. i know that your patrons (including me!) don't mind when you bring out videos and i for one would rather you take care of your mental health than have to have a video out every week or even every month. Esposito, that's not sustainable! and if you're worried about the youtube algorithm, i wouldn't be. it doesn't work the same as it used to and it's a horrible, untameable beast. you're def a workaholic, but if it means sacrificing your writing time, i know a lot of us would be happier if you took the time you need to write (and maybe even share some of your writing with us?) instead of grinding away at the sewing machine all day and night.
i really hope this doesn't come off as rude, because i really don't mean it to be. you're such a talented artist but there's no need to be a tortured artist! seriously, take your time to create the projects you want to create, because we'll all love to see them when they're done. anyone who demands a video of you every week doesn't understand that hand making art is a process that you can't predict and that needs finesse and care. please take care of yourself!
I am loving the transition from prairie cute to edwardian class.
Some Gunne Sax dresses live on the ranch, and some live above the gunsmith in town and may or may not mix poisons for subduing the other ladies husbands (for the right and discrete fee naturally)
The dress did come out very cute, and the video was not so bad as you feared. Admittedly since I have watched the others I found it well enough to follow along. I enjoy gardening, but the squirrels and rabbits and sundry of my area (along with intense sun and sand instead of soil, have foiled my attempts to have one. My last lonely thyme bush died just last week and I have surrendered with ill grace lol. I wish you all the best with your various endeavors. P.s if it would help...I'd watch a video of you maintaing your machine so that it doesn't feel like wasted time but also content.
Thank you Tiffany! The squirrels can be such little menaces, one stashed most of a pop tart in one of the window frames I can't open upstairs, so I just have to live with knowing it's there now. Rude little buggers! I feel like the machine maintenance I normally do only takes 3 minutes maximum, so it would be a very short video unfortunately!
😍 Ohhh need some black heart eye emojis. That is on my wishlist. I am working on getting «jacked» and THAT dress is … makes my heart sing. But I would go for a steely blue to go with my grey hair! 😂 Oh thank you, Bianca, for all you do. Thank you 🐝
Thank you Lynne!! I'm still waiting for my grey hairs to take over the rest ✨
Sooo cute. I like the hand stitching version of lace insertion better than zig zag stitching too, especially in a bodice and for smaller sections. I usually end up hand stitching most of my trim bits so I can make sure they lay perfectly. It definitely slows me down though!
Thank you Sara! I keep doing more and more by hand each year, and things turn out nicer, but oh boy does the time between my videos grow with the handwork eek! 😬
Making the most of shade by Larry Hodgson is an excellent resource for shade gardening.
I really love this variation of the dress, the lace inserts are very cute (in a thretening goth way - of course!)!
Thank you! The lace was sure fiddly, but worth it thanfully whew
I buy sticky rollers by the dozen and use them a lot. I have 4 cats that all like to "help" with the sewing process, from cutting to sewing up. I use a 1941 Featherweight that I just cleaned and oiled. She runs like a dream. Love your channel.
Thank you Karen! I'm working with a slightly thicker crepe this week and luckily no fur seems to stick to it! A truly magical fabric
So cute! Love the inset lace 🖤 I need to work this into a project…
Thank you! It was very time consuming, but does look /so/ nice in the end, so it is probably worth the needed patience 😩
This is the cutest freaking dress! Trying lace insertion is on my sewing bucket list and now I want to do it even more 🖤
Bias Bespoke has wonderful black interfacing in multiple weights. They are high quality and affordable, so I definitely recommend them!
I love how the lace co-ordinates with that belt buckle! Fabulous!! I'm glad you're doing more writing, but sad that it's coming out of the sleep schedule :( I fear I may sound like a Singer attachments advertisement since I asked about rufflers last time, but I HIGHLY recommend a narrow hemmer foot if you're going to be doing a lot more long straight cut ruffles! It takes a little practice, but it's definitely worth it, and you'd probably get the practice time back in time saved for one project. I find it helps to fold 1/4" of the edge in first and press it so you don't have to worry about folding in the right amount while guiding it through the foot. The 99k manual has an illustration showing how to add lace at the same time as hemming, but I haven't tried that yet.
Thank you Vincent! I did have a narrow hem foot for my last machine, which I think would still work on this one too, but god knows where it ended up. I remember I got it to work a grand total of one time and mostly wanted to throw it across the room though so I don't have the /best/ track record...😅
I love the lace inserts and the A-line skirt. If your hosta is getting crispy leaves, that probably is too much sun. Depending on the variety they can become more drought tolerant as they get established, but I’ve found that the giant varieties do appreciate a good drink at least once a week, and maybe more since it gets hot there and it sounds like your soil is well-drained on higher ground.
I’m sure I’m aging myself BUT … during the ‘height’ of the Gunne Sax fashion (when I was a teenager MANY eons ago) my family lived in Florida, so - unfortunately - when I’d finally been able to save up enough money to BUY a Gunne Sax dress … I could not FIND one that I could actually WEAR … in Florida’s heat!
This makes complete sense, Florida surely requires survival minded clothing first and all stylistic concerns second!! Even the humidity here in upstate NY is a big change for me 🥵
I think cleaning and oiling a tension assembly definitely takes less time than a day of hand sewing, but also that is exactly the kind of time management decision I find myself making frequently
Logic is sadly not often found in front of my mind 😅
Oh boy. I just KNOW this is going to distract me from my current project! Thanks for the fabulous video, Bianca!
What a perfect way to end the this hectic work day 😁
This is so exciting! I have been thinking about this since you did the first version! Thank You !
