A Sparkling Linen Blend (Flappies v.2) Dress

I feel like this video took me as long to put together as the dress had took to get going after the initial idea...which was ages ago!

But most importantly, the new dining room/kitchen floor is IN AND SO NICE 😭 My hands still hurt from chiseling the old 70's laminate off of the layer of plywood underneath it, but I am a day full of (cutting quarter round) finishing trim away from having completed floors, and it feels so clean!

I'll be back again soon, thank you for your constant patience and support ❤️

Beautiful dress! I recently got my hands on a 99k sewing machine and I am excited to make that my new full-time machine 🥹

I love the tangents your commentaries take! They’re fun to listen to and the music in this featured some new selections which were quite nice! The flappies on the old pattern picture you showed us look like eyes, which made me think of Rosalind Russell’s amazing “eyes” top in the movie, The Women. That would be an entertaining make, eh? I love that movie. Her top is the second picture in this link: https://trufauxjewels.com/blogs/blog/costume-designer-adrian Loved your fabric here and Oliver’s feet, as always.🐈‍⬛

I mean, I am a huge fan of your rambling nonsense... it's like my brain is speaking to me in a lovely voice :D

If you're looking for some pirate media that slaps, I can't recommend Our Flag Means Death highly enough. Two seasons of the queerest pirate shit you've ever seen. And if you get a library card (always a good idea) you get access to the Libby app, which is a huge database of ebooks and audiobooks for free! Listen to audiobooks AND support your local library! Win win!

T
The Closet Historian · November 28, 2025

Thank you Chae! I tried to watch Our Flag Means Death once and I am afraid I am not silly enough, I'm simply too dour a creature for things that are too fun.

Your Chief Morale Officer, Oliver, is working hard in this video!

'Empress line' allegedly came from Empress Josephine (Napoleon's bint). She preferred her dress waistline right up under her bust, supposedly to mimicking the lines of ancient Greek fashion where dresses were simple fabric tubes and fit was achieved by cords / ribbons tied strategically around the body. I'm not sure yours would count as an Empress line, but who cares because: GAWJUZ!

Are you secretly my husband? He said the same thing!! LOL.

Gorgeous! Iridescent raven colors! In re walks, may be an opportunity for an epic walking cape?

T

Thank you! I think more so saving up for a walking pad/treadmill thing for inside 😂

I have no clue where Seneca Falls is at in relation to Albany region. But there is a festival every December for It's a Wonderful Life. https://www.wonderfullifemuseum.com/2021-festival/

Nice pattern drafting, as always! One question about the flappies: for the skirt ones, I noticed the slashes you do aren't parallel to one another: the one closer to the center front seems to have a lot more angle. Is there a reason for that?

T
The Closet Historian · November 28, 2025

Thank you Matilda! Only reason is where exactly I want to position the tiny bit of flare I am adding, where I want it to point I suppose, more towards the center or more towards the side seam.

Beautiful cut and beautiful fabric! I think you gave the flappies just the right amount of floof. I'm currently refurbishing a 99k and I just noticed it has the same decals as yours. Fun fact! There's a big sheet of asbestos in the pedal! Apparently it's fine to use since it's safely encased in there and not shedding any fibres, just... don't unscrew the bottom like I did. (I'm still getting a new pedal though, mine's really rusty)

Just wanted to chime in that you're a very good teacher. I started watching you a few years ago (admittedly to fall asleep to), back when I didn't even own a sewing machine, and now I've made multiple garments! I credit a lot of my early confidence in sewing to what I learned from watching your content.

T
The Closet Historian · November 28, 2025

Thank you Sara! And good work!!

It would probably be better for me to listen to Dracula again, I have read it before, but I have a subscription to an email list that will email the part of the book that supposedly happens on the day. I get behind so fast 😅 so small chunks from May 3rd to November 7th.

Cheryl Rosbak · November 18, 2025

Love the double flap at the hip. Have you ever thought about doing a Charles James petal dress, or is that too much hip flare for you?

T
The Closet Historian · November 28, 2025

Thank you Cheryl! I'm afraid for myself I just don't love a big skirt usually, it feels too princess-y for me when I'm more of an evil crone type 😂 As a peplum maybe, but over a slim skirt for me personally.

Sarah Wilson · November 18, 2025

Thank you Vicki! I must admit I have been feeling rather tired, so I'm not sure I recommend it 😅

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to make some fabulous outerwear for the temperatures so you can keep going on your mental health walks. I would love to see a parka that is fashionable. If anyone can come up with attractive cold weather outerwear, it's you. I am researching a down puffer coat and trying to figure out how to 1) make an attractive one that 2) has two layers of down filled fabric with 3) offset down channel seams for a warm but lightweight outerwear. It's a struggle.

V
Vincent Briggs · November 19, 2025

I think seeing some winter accessories would be fun! It would be pretty easy to sew mittens from wool scraps, and heavily embellish the cuffs. Or a medieval inspired hood with a fancy capelet.

Excellent flappies. Love them!
