Gathered Bow-ish Neckline // A work in progress...

And....I figured out how I can do the sleeves this morning ✨ Just needed more room and shorter pleats, I'll show you next time!

Here is a dress design I have been wanting to replicate for ages now. I think this design is from 1938, which is a bit earlier than my usual and everything! I have a fun flocked shirting fabric from Mood (out of stock now or I'd link it for you) that I want to use, but it's fun enough I didn't want to cut into it without mock-ing up this neckline first.

I'm going to try and make this dress here, and another early 1940s style dress over on the channel soon. Now that I have the sewing parlor functional, I simply have to give it a proper spin.

Thank you so much for your patience and support ❤️

Have you ever checked Stephanie Canada's site for vintage patterns? You might could see pics of the back of the envelope on something similar or even this pattern. She has so many goodies! I'm sure if she's ever had this pattern she'll have a photo still possibly. Worth checking with her maybe...

Yeih, back to pattern drafting. LOL kittie "helping" ❤️

So much kitty assistance!!

Hi Bianca, I will send you on Instagram a couple of photos from my drafting books for similar sleeves!

i like the variable light. of course, i am not the one doing the filming and editing so you do what works best for your work flow!!! the sleeve cap looks like a box pleat to me

Denise Vitale · March 31, 2025

I have a pattern drafting book from 1942 and it has an illustration of a sleeve pattern a lot like this. I hope it is at least helpful. I just sent an ig dm.

Have you tried going through Stephanie Canada's stash on BackroomFinds.com? All of her patterns are vintage. She shows the front and backs of the envelopes on her website.

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

I search the whole web so if google sees it anywhere it usually comes up, I'm sure her site is in the index ✨

What about... pawing through some 1980s patterns to see whether any of them use that square sleeve effect?

A
Akinat · March 30, 2025

Yay! So excited for a sewing video from your new parlor! I was curious to see how the kitties would respond and I was not disappointed. ❤️

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Yeah they have been very "helpful" indeed!

M
Mary · March 30, 2025

I wish more women wore what they like instead of trying to fit into what's stereotypically feminine! I actually have naturally "strong" shoulders *and* I'm top heavy so I don't do a bold shoulder EVER but I'm all about the optical illusion of a voluminous skirt.

Thank you for taking us along on this dream journey of designing your sewing room. I have loved being along for the ride. It is wonderful to see you sewing & drafting again…not for us…but for the joy it brings you. You do have the most adorable sewing assistants, as well. In order to keep my feline sewing supervisor safe, I have a trash can with a cover, and when I clean up I run a magnet over the sewing area & floor…and also a hand held vacuum. It’s worked so far…

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Thank you Concetta! I do indeed have a little trash can with a lid under the machine to tuck all of my snipped threads into as I go. I've been using 22 pins, so I just count at the end of a day to make sure I still have 22 and none fell anywhere 😂

Hi, I'm so glad for you feel that you're back to your self agan. It could be just the "patterning table of doom", couldn't it? Just leave the color out of it altogether. A helping paw turning up at the best possible time, helping you hand sew, how kind of him. Now that the cats can be in your videos I think that your audience will grow very fast. I've heard that anything with cats in are super interesting on Youtube, and the combination of you, sewing vintage, and cats must be a winning concept. Yours, Ann

https://www.etsy.com/listing/639749814/vintage-sewing-pattern-1930s-30s-dress is another source although probably you are not looking for the actual pattern.

Yeah those re-packaging of vintage patterns places never show the pattern backs or piece shapes 😑 I find it anti community focused of them not gonna lie!

Aww congratulations Bianca, sewing video no.1 from your new room. That neck looks really pretty, a bit like a bow with the self fabric wrapped round it. Those sleeves, I've seen ones where they have two sides on the sleeve cap going straight upwards with a slit each side then you fold the middle over towards the shoulder and flip the sides over front to back and vise versa so it's folded a bit like a box, then stitch up the seams. Not explained that very well, hope it makes sense. I expect it would need interfacing to stiffen the shape too.

Janet Maffy · March 29, 2025

Besides drafting the sleeve better, will you add a shoulder pad? I have a similar body shape so love a good strong shoulder! I could also see this neckline with a straight or circle skirt for a more 50's look. I'll have to try it. Welcome back to sewing, and looking forward to more of both sewing and home decor.

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Thank you Janet! I don't think I'll add a shoulder pad to this one, just because its 1938 instead of '42 and I need all the help I can get for something to "read" a bit more 30's on my body shape 🤣

M
MK · March 29, 2025

I love this neckline! Adding it to my list to try. Btw, I also live alone and have the twin issues of no one to pin my muslins or help me level hems. My solutions are 1) basting zippers into the back of my bodice muslins and 2) a chalk puffer hem marker

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

I literally looked in a mirror and "did my best" with a hem yesterday, Luckily I tend to make things a little long so if I need to fix them later it's probably possible 😅

E
Emma Nash · March 29, 2025

That is a *strong* shoulder! Looking forward to seeing you master it

N
Nicole Cundiff · March 29, 2025

omg the first sewing video since you moved!!! what an absolute treat! <3 oh that bodice is deLICIOUS i'll definitely have to make one like it this summer, i adore it! Also, if you happen to remember, where did you get that broadcloth from? I've been trying to find something in that exact shade of pale sage green for AGES but have been struggling

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Thank you Nicole! I think this was this shade of Kona cotton, but I bought it last year so I don't really remember sadly https://www.hancocks-paducah.com/robert-kaufman-kona-cotton-desert-green/ 😅

Yay! First sewing video in your Sewing Parlour 🥰 Background birdsong is fine, supervisory kitty, even better. Like so many of your projects, I would never wear them (not my aesthetic) but I LOVE watching the process of working out how to achieve the look. Loving the home renovation content, but vey happy to see a sewing video again.

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Thank you Sam!!

Jen in Oz · March 29, 2025

I have a pattern that I bought online - Pictorial 8749 which has a bunch of different sleeves and one of them V2 has a similar sort of treatment if that helps at all? Here's the link: https://ladymarlowe.com/products/pc-8749

L
Lesley Seaden · March 29, 2025

Love those sleeves. They were way more adventurous than today's fashion I think

M
Melissa Elphinstone · March 29, 2025

I have a knit top with the same detail on the back yoke. It's really pretty

W
Whipstitchnic · March 29, 2025

Oooo the neckline is so pretty!! Can’t wait to try that one! Also if someone feels threatened by one’s shoulder treatment, one does not need that someone in one’s life! I personally have felt that big shoulders make my small boobs look smaller, but maybe i should try again-helps to be open minded! Huzzah to the inaugural sewing parlor video!! 🍾

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Thank you! Sometimes I would kill for less dart fullness, shall we say, it's much more "fashion" and easier to design for 😂✨

T
TeeFo · March 29, 2025

Congratulations! It's such an honor to watch you make your dream sewing room! In re:blackout curtains/modeling space, could you combine the two needs into one solution? Lovely thick (faux) velvet curtains in a deep color that could also act as a backdrop? Congratulations again! So happy for you and your kiddos 😺 💚💚💚

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

Thank you Theo! Unfortunately the radiators along the floor mean I can't have curtains to the floor, which means no long curtains and no floor length backdrops around windows sadly!

ForgottenSaves · March 29, 2025

Lovely to see a sewing video in the new space, and I enjoy the birdsong accompaniment! With you on not needing to appeal to men haha, although my shoulders are wide enough on their own that I don't need help from that quarter lol

A wealth of videos this weekend ❤️ It's a privilege to get to see your first sewing video from the new parlor. I especially enjoyed kitty cameos during the sewing portion - it's neat that we'll occasionally get to see the cats. I hope they don't get up to too much mischief in your workspace 😂

T
The Closet Historian · April 8, 2025

I can confirm from these last few weeks attempts that the cats will be making regular appearances in the videos from now on whether I'd like it or not 😂

J
Jaime Lamberto · March 28, 2025

Yea! Happy to see you back to sewing, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the new house videos. My favorite comment was wanting to keep men far away lol…same.

M
Marcia Mc. · March 28, 2025

Congrats on your first sewing video on your new home! I know it felt great to get back to drafting and sewing. Although I love the vibe of your intro and outro, I agree blackout curtains will be your solution for the variable lighting. Although your table is green, it will always be the *Blue* Patterning Table of Doom to me. 😃

T

Thank you Marcia! I knew I couldn't deal with all the daylight 🧛‍♀️😂
