More Elegant Days...
There was a little surprise leaning up against the wall upstairs on my final walkthrough yesterday. I'm not sure what year this photo is from, but there are electric lines! (and a dog) I can show you the outside of the house! Because...
The house no longer looks like this. The swags of neoclassical molding, the dental details, any spindle or rail above the first floor are all gone. I don't have a single shutter. Even the columns on the porch are slightly different and so must have been replaced. BUT-- now I know what it looked like originally! So all I have to do is save up a couple hundred grand (🤣) and we can have it reconstructed back to how it once was. I have no idea what of the original is still hiding waterlogged beneath the current "modern" siding and sad storm windows, but I do know that /just now/ I cannot afford to find out. Maybe one day.
I signed for her yesterday morning. Now the work begins. Thank you, endless thanks, for this dream of a chance to help this place remember her more elegant days.

Congratulations on the house!! It’s so darling. When the day comes to venture under the new siding, if the old swags are gone, there are companies that still make those kind of moldings from the original molds! There’s a place in Chicago called the Chicago Decorators Supply that was used a lot for houses in my part of the Midwest; they might have something that matches! They do moldings for exteriors AND interiors if you need an endless array of plaster beauties for your Pinterest board haha

On a completely different train of thought, going absolutely nowhere. I found a video in my feed something about designers guild awards of America, Sorry I can't remember the name exactly. There were a lot celebrities (I guess, I'm out of touch) wearing designer work (again I guess) and through it all I was thinking where are you and your latest looks? Actually any of the Lookbooks would have worked except perhaps the Tatooine one. If you had shown up in any of your evening wear ones, especially from the latest one with the mail headpieces, you would have changed American design, completely and forever. Maybe that's why you wasn't invited... Conspiracy? Well, now that you are based in New York, they have no excuses not to invite you. There was one designer wearing her own work there, by the way. Yes, indoor shoes for the win. Whenever I see historic womens footwear i think they look way too thin to be worn outside. Central heat only started around 1900, so a single boiler could heat an entire house.
