The world's worst video card?
Hello patrons! This is the first of two videos where I will build a circuit that displays an image on a standard VGA monitor.
In this first video, I talk about the horizontal and vertical timing sync pulses that are required and build a circuit that produces those signals correctly. The video concludes with the monitor recognizing the signal, although there's no image data yet.
The next video is mostly done, so the unbearable wait for the exciting conclusion should hopefully be just a week or so.
As always, thanks for your support and please let me know if you see any problems with this video. Otherwise I plan to release it sometime Friday.
Thanks,
-Ben

Wonderful. More of the same, please.
This is the video that made me subscribe. Well, together with all of the others.
I don't think you have a bad video, but this one really stood out. It took something that I never would have thought I could have grasped and brought it within reach. I just increased my support tier for your work, thanks for the awesome content.
Here's a kind of Meta-request: I am rather awed by your pedagogical prowess... So would like to ask you whether you have formal training in teaching or just developed your skills organically by practice - or what the mix was? Also, do you have or can you recommend good texts/tutorials/videos/courses... on pedagogy or course design - specifically how to break down dependencies between knowledge and how to linearise that into a succession of lessons that doesn't need too much in the way of 'forward references' ? Perhaps it'd make a good video? Sorry if I am too long-winded here... I have a longstanding desire to teach some of this stuff myself, and at my age now, I need to put that into practice before it's too late :-/ Thanks again!
So great to see another video from you, Ben! :-) I'm really looking forward to the next one... ...no pressure ;-) I would like to say that you are probably the best teacher I've seen... easily the best on YouTube. I'd put you on a level with Abelson and Sussman, except perhaps for comedy antics (so far) :-)
So incredibly hyped for this!
Awesome video - thanks :)
OH, Ah - O love it! It made me doubled the pledge...
Great video. Thanks.
Crazy awesome! Now connect it to the cpu and compute some output! lol .. great job
fantastic video. how you make the impossibly incomprehensible trivially understandable is a real gift. I built the 8 bit computer and learned so much in the process. this is great, too. thank you.
2. There is an editing error just before you plug in the monitor, some of the previous take made it into the final render, I think. (about 31:32) (Pressing shift+enter to make a new line and not end the commment seems to be really hard to me)
I wasn't sure what to do about that. I went to plug it in and hesitated—forgot what I was going to say or something—then the second time actually did plug it in. If I edit out the first attempt, there would be an awkward jump cut where things move around, so there was no good option. I decided the jump cut looked worse.
Two things I noticed: 1. In the beginning I had some struggles understanding the math you were doing with pixels and timings. I eventually worked out why that math was needed, once I saw you were counting time in pixels (instead of seconds) to make it work with the pixel clock.
Great video!
Thank you, very instructive ! And, as usual, your breadboards are so pretty !!! I'm jealous !
No need for jealousy - just buy your own! :-) Ben's wiring is definitely Art though. The sort of thing I used to aspire to but would get told off by bosses for wasting time :'( My OCD thanks you, Ben! :-)
