Devlog#7.5 : I'm in it deep.

Hey there, so this devlog is kinda special as I write it in a bit of an urgency.

I felt motivated to finish the update today, so I decided to boot up Ren'py and get to work, but as I opened Ren'py, I realized that...

Tales of Unity's entire script, is missing.

The main menu works, I still have all the renders, the script simply got yeeted, and deleted.

The last time I worked was 2 days back I had just finished to write Elise's intro scene towards her animation, and here I am facing a black screen.

So, not all is lost.

Basically all I need to do is grab the latest Beta I posted, simply copy and paste the script, easy isn't it ?

But that means that I lost 40% of v0.11's entire update.

I am Absolutely livid, I am mad beyond fucking relief.

I won't be able to ensure ToU's update until atleast a while, this unironically fucked my motivation.

I've got multiple options in front of me on how to handle things.

Option 1 : Redo everything

I'll gather what I can from the latest Beta, and from there I'll slowly, build everything back, the main drawback is that it takes time, a lot of time but you'd get the full update.

Option 2 : Summarize and develop the main axis

This one is the easiest to get an update fast, the main scene with Lou would still get it's development but anything around it would be summarized by Stronk ingame.

keeping the main axis of development intact, but reducing the length of the update.

Option 3 : Pick up Project: Jericho

Regardless of either of the 2 first option, I am unironically fed up to see my work, as slow as it was thrown away.

So I'm thinking about getting Project: Jericho's 0.1 out before finishing the beta, effectively putting Tales of Unity, in a micro hiatus of a month or two.

This option gives me the time to mentally reset my brain around ToU, while still getting a massive chunk of content through P:J out.

___________

Basically ever since I started "working" IRL, my time has been scarce and my life even more depressing, so I decided to quit my IRL activity to go back to, well writing VNs.

But I want to frank with y'all, I don't  want to work on Tales of Unity right now, not after losing all of that major work I've put into it.

Careful, I'm not saying that I'm done with the project overall, FAR from it.

But I need a break, I discussed this with a few people, namely Story Anon, the dev of OOT, Cryo dev of Oppai Odyssey, also discussed a bit with Jestur from Ripples and Sky a common friend which is too preparing a banger VN.

The main reason I'm scared to work on Project: Jericho is that I don't want to disappoint my patrons, these people that literally allow me to stay alive each month, I'm sorta scared that I could lose my only way of life by switching project, even briefly.

So I put this choice in your hands, fans, pledgers, and simple players.

In my opinion it doesn't make sense if you burn yourself out on ToU until passion becomes duty. Even if 1 is my preferred choice, 3 would make the most sense. As long as ToU won't be canceled, it would be better for you to catch a breath after this setback of losing data. That's why I chose 3, stay Stronk my fellow of culture <3

Honestly 1 or 3 is my preferred option, I’d rather you put something out that you feel motivated to do rather then be forced every step of the way to make something that you’ll later regret making

Take your time but I just want to ask if you have tried recovering the file. According to reddit, Renpy keeps backups and you can get the script from compiled games (if you did some test runs recently). Finaly there is disc recovery when you scan the data on the hard drive but that might be to late (and advanced). I wish you good luck in whatever you chose.

I haven't compiled ToU ever since the last Beta, mostly because there is a dev mode that allows me to test without compiling everything in a neat .zip I did gather what I could and got back 90% of the game, now the 10 remaining% just need to be, well rewritten

If your mindset is wrong, you can't get a quality product out. Even though it'd stink to have to wait longer on a ToU update, we also want it to be good. If you think getting your mind off it by doing Jericho will help, then by all means do! Just do NOT choose option 2!

Haha well I can see by the poll that option 2 is DEFINITLY the favorite, to be more serious, I learned during a discussion that as we grow older we get new ideas from our newfound maturity I suppose Project: Jericho sorta incarnates that, still I refuse to ever let ToU go down the drain, it'll take the time it needs, but it'll be completed that much I can absolutly assure

I can fully relate to losing motivation when you lose large amounts of progress. If you think you can get motivated by putting it on hiatus, then feel free to do so.

I forgot to mention it in the post but Option 1 & 3 are entertwined, as I'll get P:J updates out while working on Tales of Unity
