Which project should I work now?

Hi! We just reached an awesome milestone - over 100 patrons! Thank you so much everyone that is supporting me! You have no idea how that makes me happy and how it's helping me real life. As a commemoration for this milestone, instead of going on the monthly "Requests Center", this time I would like to you pick the game you would like to me work on.

Exactly, my next conversion will be based on the opinions of my patrons!

Not necessarily the winner will be the next conversion, I always pick 3-4 projects, analyze them and based on that I decide which one I'm the most confident in going. But definitely the most votes one I'll fulfill as the next project.

This is exclusive for patrons, so if you would like to your game end up picked, make sure to comment the reasons on this post so you can convince the other patrons in picking it as well! ^^

By the way, you can pick more than one option.

Explaining tags:

  • SA-1: I will install and optimize the game to use the SA-1 chip, allowing to the game run up to 500% faster than original. Normally SA-1 makes the game run up to 400% faster.

  • Super FX: I will either install or upgrade the GSU chip into the game.

  • FastROM: I will add FastROM to the game. If FastROM is not enough, SA-1 will later be added. Normally FastROM makes the game run up to 30% faster.

  • Delta: I will apply Delta-Based Frame Correction to the game, making the game run smoothly and not too fast. Normally this is used in conjunction to an enhancement chip.

  • Widescreen: I will add widescreen support to the game, which can be played on bsnes_hd and futurely on ares/higan. MiSTer is also possible. Widescreen will let the game display fullscreen on 16:9 displays, without any pillar or letterboxing. The game will also feature more visible area, making it look better.

Note that I don't have the equipment required for doing Super FX conversions yet, however I can start with Star Fox using bsnes and sd2snes using the 21.47 MHz as base. Once I have the required equipment, I can do GSU-2 optimizations with hardware-edge optimization and overclocking. qwertymodo and The Real Phoenix are currently making Super FX specific carts for me and parts of this Patreon funds are being used to get the additional equipment for flashing, programming and maintaining Super FX ROMs.

Starfox at 30FPS would be amazing :)

When you say "MiSTer is also possible" for the wide-screen modes, do you mean as-is or do you think the core would need to be updated? Is this something that's already proven to work on real hardware? If the core would need changing, what kinds of changes would be necessary? This is something I'm curious about but not necessarily enough to vote for it. I think that's mostly because I can't think of many SNES games that would benefit much. For example, it would probably help Uniracers a good bit because it can be hard to see far enough ahead (like Sonic the Hedgehog). I can see the benefit for SMW too. But I'm not sure how many games there are where it's appropriate.

Star Fox will be legendary

Return of Double Dragon, please!! It's a great beat em up with an incredible variety of moves for the time and awesome soundtrack that's usually critised for feeling too slow. A speed boost and being able to play it smoothly at 60fps would definitely make it one of the best beat em ups of the 16 bits era and feel like a new game. Moreover, applying the SA-1 hacks to different game genres would likely raise the interest in these projects among more SNES and retro fans. Return of Double Dragon, the Japanese version, is the most complete version of the game and came months after the USA release. I'm also really interested in the Axelay SA-1 hack as this is one of the best SNES shoot em ups! Thank you!!

I see Out of this World on the list, but have you considered Flashback as well? The cutscenes would absolutely benefit from some optimization, as well as a few gameplay elements.

I too would be interested in Flashback. Seems like it always got less love than Out of this World.

I know this is might not be a real chip enhancement per se, but if you were to work on Sim City, would such a thing as SNES mouse support be possible to implement? Also, with the published SNES source code for Doom, would there be a chance that it could perhaps be optimized enough to improve the framerate of that game. For now, my vote will fall on Star Fox. That game is still great but it's potential seems to always be held back by the slow fps. Another World would also be nice to see in its full glory, As I believe it was originally meant to utilize the SA-1 chip. Would be nice for everything to come full-circle

I'm with you on the mouse support for Sim City

I voted for Star Fox because you might as well keep on rolling with the delta stuff, but if you want to wait on your GSU dev carts or you just need a palate cleanser, Zelda FastROM was my second choice as it’s going to be exponentially more popular than another shooter, although I would love to see UN Squadron done next out of the shooters.

Axelay and area 88 buddy (I know I sound like a broken record)...

I would like to see Donkey Kong Country 3, that waterfall level is really bad

I'd really like to see what you can do with Star Fox. Not so much for Star Fox itself, but for the possibilities it might open up for the other FX games (especially Stunt Race FX, which always looks cool to me but the framerate ruins it).

With this many options you might want to do a runoff vote of the top two or three.

No SA-1 U.N. Squadron? 😅

if FastROM fails to remove slowdown, SA-1 will be used
