Is no one commenting on the foreshadowing of "the bigger the bang the greater the price" (paraphrased, badly)? Some one gon die starcasting, I guarantee it.
Plus, the plot requires that the Starcaster escapes. Firing would not have changed that. What it would have changed is CORT'S immediate situation. Meaning, no trouble and some frustration at not being counted on to be competent; or a courts martial and possibly having an arm removed.
No the plot requires that Cort is our Hero too. Not a cripple in a cell.
...did she even do any big casts if she didn't even hit the primary target? She's a terrible strategist. Like, REALLY bad. If he had taken the shot - he could have easily wiped out 10x other friendly ships, but if he'd hit the target, that would have SAVED 100s or 1000s of friendly ships from what that escaping weapon can do. Horrible call on her part.
And what exactly do you think her "primary target" was? Nobody in the Federation knows yet that Major Danton has been killed, or that the Dranglaex have his Starcaster. They're responding to a call of an enemy ambush, which is all that got out before the bridge was decimated. Arriving reinforcements know that the Xelghos was disabled and boarded. That's the only information they're working with at the moment. And even she did know the Starcaster had been taken, or by whom, how exactly is she supposed to have known which of the tiny little transports he was on, or which of the larger ships he then boarded? In the middle of a vast and chaotic space battle? She used her Starcaster to take out a handful of Dranglaex ships, far more than the Dreadstorms alone would have taken out. Being unwilling to risk/sacrifice Federation lives for what she can only at this moment perceive as the chance to kill a few extra Dranglaex isn't "terrible strategy."
