OKAYYYYY NOW WE’RE FUCKING COOKING.
This episode gave us SO MUCH lore. The super strange and creepy ass cult?! The fuck!??!?! Society of the Blind Eye, the memory gun, all the people in town having their memories erased?! That explains so much about why everybody in this place just accepts the most insane shit imaginable and moves on with their lives 😂I love how I'm starting to realize, slowly but surely, what the shit is going on.
But McGucket absolutely stole this episode for me! Hands down. I’ve spent this entire show looking at him like he’s just some random crackhead hillbilly, and now we learn that there is an actual tragic reason he became like this?! That shit genuinely made me feel terrible for him. AND THE FACT HE DID IT TO HIMSELF!! Fuuckkkkkkkkkkkkkk.
This show is so good at taking characters you think are just jokes and then suddenly making you care about them.
The more I learn about this show, the more I need to know.
I NEED MORE.

Alex you should totally watch The Owl House when youre done with Gravity Falls. It is very similar in vibes and, somehow, the story is on the same level of peak-ness of Gravity Falls.
mcgucket making the triangle with his eye in the middle is such a cool little detail at the end of his craziness video, this show is surprisingly awesome

I always saw McGucket's downword slide as a aligory for substance abuse. He overdosed on something artifical to help him forget and it gradually ruined his life. only by facing it could he begin to heal himself. The gibberish McGucket speaks in his memory is a code, but I won't translate it here since it's a big spoiler. But here's some of the other codes this episode: Credits: IGNORANCE IS BLISS. BUT BLISS IS BORING. Numbers: GIDEON’S TANTRUMS, MISSPELLED TATTOOS, SHANDRA’S REJECTIONS, SOCIETY’S VIEWS, A FEAR OF WITCHES, A LIFE OF REGRET, THESE ARE THE THINGS THAT THEY TRY TO FORGET.
So a little behind the scenes: during S1, fans of the show were SUPER close to discovering who the author of the journal was. So to throw the fans off, Alex Hirsch had some of his animators draw a fake leak of someone who looked like McGucket writing the journals, posted it to either a Gravity Falls forum or 4chan, had it taken down, then publicly condemned the leak as “confidential”. So the true secret of the author was safe
How were they close to figuring it out in s1? Is it cause of the secret hints they put in the episodes that you don’t notice at first? (Im watching this show with Alex)
I remember seeing this live having a new appreciation for McGucket. Imo it is just another use of the same trope as another show I barely watched as a kid but know part of the story (I’m not saying it in case Alex does watch it, but the initials are AT) but I don’t care if it’s reused. He really needed some love these past few episodes
