Bonus Episode: Hi Sister
Sometimes we spend months preparing episodes and other times they just ... happen.
Last month, we logged on to record our January AMA. Before we started the show, we discovered that we had both spent the week devouring YouTube videos breaking down the problematic rise and spectacular fall of Shane Dawson (here are some of our favorites). After almost half an hour, we realized, "Hey wait a minute, we have a show where we do this."
So here it is: A chronological retelling of the now-mythical youtube drama that broke the internet in 2019 and unexpectedly roared back to life in 2020. Along the way we take detours into parasocial relationships, online debate etiquette, “cancel culture” and a 1976 mafia musical starring a busload of children.
We absolutely loved making this and our appetite for internet drama is endless. Let us know in the comments about other online controversies we should cover on future bonus episodes. And in case you're new here, this post has instructions for listening to bonus episodes.
As yet un-splurged,
Sarah and Mike
P.S. Thank you to our dear friend Carolyn Kendrick, who helped us edit this episode and makes wonderful music for Sarah's other show!

It’s so crazy listening to this in hindsight and realizing that the same people who were complaining about being held to 2020 standards for their actions in the 2000s are now back to being super racist. Seems like it was really about being as racist as possible while not facing public ire.
Wait how much of your hangout with Matt was research for this Mike???
It's funny. One of the things that draws me to this pod is you're voices. Very millennial, relatable. Feels natural and comfortable to me and I can't get enough!
We gotta revisit this, Mike…
The little dig in the opener was too good!!
But he is a predator it's been proven now lol
I wish I never learned about this... But I guess it's good to know what alot of people are talking about... To me it's the epitome of dumb but on the other hand can influence culture and politics... Sigh
One of the wildest parts of Tati's second video was when she tried to justify befriending Jefree, who was already known to be racist, misogynistic, and elitist, by saying she only did it to "make him a better person" and was trying to "get him involved in charity"
and that the charity was just christian evangelism!!!!
It would be great to revisit this conversation
This didn’t age well.
Part 2: Cover Jeffree Star's problematic involvement in these cancellations, the makeup palette/money making angle, and recent updates on James Charles highlighting whether his underage sexting admissions do, in fact, put him into a predatorial category, or not.
Would love an update/part two on this although it’s pretty bleak so I wouldn’t blame you if you don’t lol. If you ever want to deep dive on any YouTube drama, I am a 30 year old that’s far too knowledgeable on it all and would love to be a research assistant 🤣 Unpaid and everything seriously lol hit me up
Kat Von D + Jeffrey Star (2016), Nicki Minaj + lil Kim, Eminem + Machine Gun Kelly(2018) , what happened between drake + lil wayne, Tupac + biggies murders see here I go down my own rabbit hole lmaoooo
The whole time I’m listening to this I’m realizing how desperately I want this to be revisited with the information that James Charles did, in fact, confess to being a prxdator more than once 💀 yikes
I love this format of basically just one person telling another person about drama, for the bonus episodes. I enjoy how light and frothy it is, and it feels very indulgent to listen to and learn about something I had no idea was even happening. It's a welcome relief from remembering fast-walking in zigzags everywhere to make it harder to get sniped in 2002. If you guys needed approval to do these not-especially-research-heavy bonus episodes, you have mine.
I don’t have the slightest idea who these people are but I’m riveted by your story telling as always
Just think the same thing 🤣
please do an update
oh yeah a update in light of the new allegations against james would be awesome! also the video mike mentioned was by the wonderful d‘angelo wallace who did a masterful deep dive in shane dawsons whole shit show. geb since deleted it because of the james update but reuploads abound
We 1000000% need an update to this ep ! <3
We need an update now that it turns out he is problematic and cancelled! Lmao
I have no idea who these people are and I am too old to care about “YouTube famous” people. That being said, I can to listen to Sarah and Michael talk about pretty much anything, so I enjoyed this episode way more than I thought I would!
Turns out that I wasn't totally full of shit afterall.
you need to do the updated story !
2nd-ing that I'd love to hear a follow-up from the allegations!
id love an update now that more has come out about james charles :0
Please do a follow up on this now that Tati has been somewhat vindicated 👀
I honestly don't know who any of these people really are beyond a name... but I enjoy listening to you two talk about anything, and everything, and everyone!
Please, please, please do a debunk on the trump women - Melanie, Ivanka, Tiffany- all of ‘em. Each one is UNDER-maligned. Go for gold on this one.
I gasped when Mike said he never heard of Shane Dawson. He’s been on since the beginning. I thought everyone at least knows of the OGs
Best three Canadian dollars I evva spent
hi Wes Fry
I found this fairly interesting even though I have NO IDEA who these youtubers are
shane dawson looks like rumpelstiltskin from Shrek
I can thoroughly reccomend Nathalie Wynn (Contrapoint)'s video on Cancelling. She has some really great insight into cancel culture and the James Charles debacle.
I just listened to the DC sniper episodes and wow they were incredible and incredible depressing. As someone who lived in Baltimore at the time, it was fascinating to hear the whole story. As an aside the whole thing is shockingly similar to the plot of The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie.
I really appreciate this bonus episode. I was/am (still haven't decided) a fan of Jeffree Star, and when this controversy broke, I thought it would blow over quickly. I knew it was big when I heard about in the "mainstream" news. Thank you for you dive into this scandal. I also just want to say that I wasn't as outraged as most people were about the racism and pedophilia in Shane and Jeffree's pasts. I thought that these guys were just trying to be edgy. When I was in college, I knew quite a few gay/lesbian people who dressed and spoke in a provocative way just to get a rise out of people. I realize now that that kind of behavior is just distasteful and terrible, but I think it speaks to the mental age and maturity of these two men. Again, thanks for deep dive. I appreciate your comments and analyses.
Thanks for being so so brill! 🌱🌱 Don’t know if this is going on anywhere else too but would love to please hear about the current panic around the rise in dognapping . It’s the sad but dubious talk of the town where I am
I'm so glad I stopped overthinking simple pleasures.
I'd love to hear Sarah do an update on her research into the Satanic Panic (since that ep was so long ago!). Btw, Sarah, you probably know about this already, but the history of treating tabletop RPGs (like Dungeons & Dragons) as a satanic recruitment tool is WILD (I used to work at a TTRPG company and we still occasionally got people accusing us of Doing The Occult). When I was in elementary school, we actually had people come in *during actual class time* to warn us about the dangers of D&D, which is doubly ironic since almost all of the founders of D&D (Gary Gygax, Tracy Hickman, Dave Arneson, etc.) were actually conservative Christians themselves.
This was my experience! I grew up in an Evangelical household and I was always told that D&D was bad/dangerous. But I was also really young and didn't know what it was so it totally freaked me out about it, but then when I watched Stranger Things (literally my first interaction with D&D), I was like, "wait - what? There's no Satan calls or anything?"
Hi! I am just (re)listening to the Dr. Oz episode and so finding out that you are going back to a more sustainable schedule. It made me remember when I teared up when you guys increased to weekly because the world was so... bananas (I was walking my dog, I can tell you exactly where we were). So big THANK YOU to both of you for doing what you did! I blame Oprah for a big chunk of the anti-science/ people not believing actual data and true things problem; this has killed hundreds of thousands of people, no big deal. Her participation in pseudo -science made people waaaaay more susceptible to, well, you know. And Michael, Huffpost's loss. Truly. Sled dogs! (my topic suggestion, I have made it before)
Everyone loves Oprah, but she spawned Drs Oz and Phil, both of whom are *so* harmful!
TBH I am afraid to subscribe to Maintenance Phase but I am afraid I might start screaming and throwing things
Totally makes sense that weekly episode are not sustainable! I honestly don’t know how y’all have done it for a whole year, on top of your other shows and all your other work. These episodes clearly require a ton of work. Don’t want you to burn out!
This is for the most recent episode but you guys, I would adore the Hobbes cut of the Doctor Oz episode. I have had to sit in my hematologist's waiting room watching him shill stuff *so many times* and it makes me so mad every time. Medical astrology! Beat your cancer with cordyceps! i am in a waiting room filled with cancer patients aaaaaa. But yes, I would love that as a weekly or even bonus episode.
I’m 40 years old so this episode was EXTREMELY helpful in seeming like I knew what I was talking about to my kids.
Just joined, but before I did I convinced at least 10 people to start listening to YWA. I can't help pushing things I love. Sarah has mentioned the movie Heat a number of times and I wonder what her take is on Carlito's Way, which I find the superior movie. I encourage more Al Pacino discussions. And Nancy Grace.
I have though about it and I really need your take on NOMADLAND + it's depiction of homelessness
I would love to hear your take on Hilaria Baldwin! Love the podcast
I also don't like how people kept excusing Jeffree Star's behavior by saying "it was so long ago" when he said racist, sexist things about Jackie Aina in 2018.
Hi Ras. I had suggested BeanDad as a topic for YWA and you pointed me at the "Why Are Dads" podcast. I can't find our original comments but I wanted to thank you. And now I'm also a fan of WAD, which I'm especially grateful for because I've just finished binging through all of YWA.
Sarah and Michael what do you think about the Scott Peterson case????????
I said this in twitter and I'd really like to see a video on the moral panic of lead paint in the early 2000's.
thoughts on the latest james charles allegations?
I have questions for your next Q&A! 1. How do you know when to stop researching a subject? (That is, how do you stop going down rabbit holes?) 2. How do you become a methodology queen?
Hi I just ordered a mug in the mail and it came in broken. Is there anything I can do to remedy? I need to drink up the “awww sweetie” vibes
absolutely obsessed with “first they came for the racists and i did not speak out”
Maybe not the most culturally vital person, but this person has been on TV for 25 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XruPCV_gGYo
Hi Sarah and Michael, new Patron, but recently newer fan. My partner got me into your show and I listen all the time now, we agree to listen together, like watching a streaming show together and not watching without the other. One topic I'd particularly love to hear you all cover is the myth about transgender predators in bathrooms. I'm an LGBTQ advocate in a growingly redder state that is pushing more and more anti-LGBTQ, specifically anti-transgender, policies. This has been largely debunked by most people as a concern, but it falls back to your episode about stranger danger and the general theme of moral panics. There are lots of other "emerging issues" on transgender kids like medical care and sports, but those are still being "debated", maybe content for a future episodes. I'd just love to know the origins of the bathroom and transgender people myth. Also, as a newer patron who heard o. Your show another patron requested more OJ episodes: please. Less. OJ. Episodes.
I second this! Trans predators in bathrooms is a great ideas...sports as well. or JK ROWLING!
I was thinking, Britney adjacent and episode on conservatorship and the ways that unfortunately her situation is not a unique of (potential) conservator abuse would be really good
I have loved all your episodes, working my way through. Mike how the f**k did you not know the legend that is Michael Bolton 😂
Great episode
I just love you guys. Thank you.
This was incredible
This is so well timed because just today there’s even more JC drama a la Tati’s harassment allegations 🙃🙃
I am a YT creator, but knew none of this drama--not in this corner of YT. I loved this so much.
If you guys havent seen it, you should really watch Contrapoints' video "Cancelling | Contrapoints" on YouTube. She is a prominent YouTuber who went through her own very dramatic cancellation (because of of her supposed transphobia/enbyphobia - she herself is a trans woman) and she analyzes the process afterwards. It was fascinating.
I was really excited to watch some of the clips on YouTube, then clicked through and realized I've already watched all of them, too. 🤣🤦♀️
*as a patreon, i feel entitled to list my opinions lol
Michael and Sarah should make them Patreon levels. "For $500/month you get to offer 1 constructive criticism per month." "For $1000/month M & S will acknowledge receipt of said criticism."
I love this podcast! I'm sad every Monday when there's no new episodes. What else am I supposed to listen to?! Anyways, as a former PhD in AfAm studies, I could suggest few ideas: 1, the icongraphy of MLK, 2the so-called 'rivalary' between MLK and Malcom X (which is silly) 3)the history of marjuana illegality and the racial implications that bred it, 4)the tobacco industry (there's lawsuits currently pending) and 5)prohobition--i think people miss think about that one alot.
oooh yes the marijuana laws are perfect for a YWA episode! A toxic cocktail of racism and capitalism at its finest!
I need an episode on identity politics.
May I suggest an episode about "Bean Dad"?
Sarah talks about him in Why Are Dads!
Okay, I loved this episode. I don’t follow these peoples’ actual careers but I follow their drama so hearing it in chronological order was great. I’m not a fan of any of these influencers, especially James Charles, only because he’s like a whole decade younger than I am and is always doing silly shit to get into hot water and I’m just too old for all dat. But none of that silly shit is “cancel” worthy and this episode actually kept me very neutral on Charles and definitely made me realize that the reason I don’t like him isn’t because he’s a bad person but indeed because he’s childish...which is kind of okay bc he’s still SO young. The professionalism and delivery of neutral reporting from this podcast have seriously started upping my standards for a lot of other podcasts I listen to. I don’t want to name any podcasts specifically but I can’t really listen to a very publicized podcast easily anymore because all I can notice now is their lack of empathy and neutrality. Okay I’ll name it, it’s the NBC Dateline podcast.
Hello Mike and Sarah! I woke up this morning and noticed this bonus episode on my phone app. Woo-hoo! I got up quickly to squeeze in a walk and listen before work. The air had a new scent of sunshine when I stepped out of the house. I'm in Southern California so we don't really get to play "winter" down here, but even so there's a slight shift in the air as the seasons change -- I've been here long enough to think the sky has a slightly different shade of blue. The smell of nightdew was fading and the birds were flexing their morning chorus. I was lucky enough to stand beneath a lamp-post and enjoy a solo of trills, cheeps, chirrups, and a kind of truncated fire-alarm thing, all against the intermittent rumble of early cars leaving driveways and a distant leafblower. Then another bird arrived across the street, and the pair queen's gambitted themselves away across trees and rooftops trying to find the higher stage. You know that feeling when you're about to do something really nice, but you sit in that anticipation-moment a little longer than you need to and that little buzz kind of halos out and draws focus on other lovely things? That's what I enjoyed by not quite listening to your show this morning. Here's to looking forward to a positive year and onward. I'll try and listen again tomorrow. Blessèd be.
Oh my gosh this is the best episode yet
I read an article about Mia Farrow that made me think that everyone is wrong about Woody Allen. Would love your thoughts! Here’s the article - https://levine2001.medium.com/the-woody-allen-controversy-reader-a-closer-look-at-mia-farrows-adoption-addiction-or-the-426fbd614895
I was thrilled to hear it was here. Just one question... what happened to Jeffree Starr?
subscribed to your patreon the minute i heard this episode was available here and i was not disappointed
Commenting on people commenting on people commenting on about people’s comments. Thank you foragers of our culture. <3
This whole episode was delightful! Hilariously, vanity vitamins are the only vitamin I have ever taken that showed an actual result. Or maybe I should say infuriatingly, since i would much rather have a stronger immune system or somesuch then fewer hangnails.
Me: I already support lots of creators on Patreon, I can’t really stretch to YWA. YWA: on Patreon we have a bonus episode on YT beauty drama. Me: shut up and take my money!
yea i wish they would put up more bonus content for the patreon but i am ok that they don't. reason is, their podcasts are so well researched and fact-based, whereas other patreons i support are a lot more off-the-cuff and don't take as much (or if any) preparation.
And then James Charles unfortunately went on to steal a design from Teddy Fresh with his own clothing lines despite Ethan and Hila defending him from the beginning. Oops.
I’m surprised you guys didn’t bring up the Contrapoints cancelling video! That’s where I heard about the whole kerfuffle. In any case a nice respite from the other kind of news! Long live gossip.
Contrapoints is the best, theeee best!
As a 30 something YouTube and YouTube drama addict, this episode made my heart explode with joy. Thank you for the awesome episode! The anti-James Charles sentiment when everything went down was some crazy shit...
I loved this, even though I had no idea who you were talking about! And would you guys ever be interested in doing a TWA makeup for real? It seems like such a scam, but maybe that's just me.
Have you two seen the YouTuber D’Angelo Wallace’s series on this matter? Really interesting stuff!
Thank you both for your service!
So I’m 40 and know nothing about YouTube stars... this episode made me want to increase my Patreon payment to you two. So entertaining!
Not me joining your Patreon as soon as I heard about James Charles and Shane Dawson Content👀👀. Great to finally be here though I love you guys💕💕🐣🐣
I did the exact same thing lol 😎
Loved this episode! Speaking of lots of influencers selling hair vitamins, this made me wonder what Mike and Sarah’s take is on The Bachelor franchise struggle with racism and the recent semi-firing of host Chris Harrison. I’ve been hate watching that show for years and have been feeling real complicit with the problem. Not sure if you’ve addressed The Bachelor before as I’m semi-new here!
As a fifth grade teacher, I'm so glad to have someone else research what in the world my kids are talking about all the time. What a gift.
As a high school teacher I find the useful for the same reason! 🤣
Thank you for this y’all! As a 30-something year old, I was kind of familiar with this beef and just found that trying to work backwards through all of the different events that transpired was exhausting. So again, thank you for doing all of the work! Also, I do have a recommendation to drop in the suggestion box for the topic of a show. I recently binged the series “Escape from Dannemora” as part of a little research that I did for one of my criminal justice courses. Joyce Mitchell, the female co-conspirator in the ordeal was made out to be this sex-hungry woman in the series, but she denied having any sort of sexual activity with either inmate. But anywho, just wanted to toss that out there and let you know that I’m a huge fan of you both. Thank you!
So much truth “There are such high consequences for something that sounds so petty, when you explain how it got started to somebody else...”
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet (or will even see this), but I feel like an interesting connection of topics within YWA is the fact that Shane Dawson's longtime podcast co-host was Jessie Buttafuoco, as in Joey Buttafuoco's daughter
I loved this episode! Y'all can discuss anything and I'm here for it! Documentaries, TV shows, articles WHATEVER!
This is my first month as a patron and I LOVE the level of analysis here omg
Me as well. I have listened and respect the level of in depth analysis in like minded speaking. Why I patreon.
P l e a s e do an onision episode, I was so invested last summer.
Mike and Sarah, this one made me think that I would love to hear your thoughts about bullying, especially cyber bullying - I feel like there are a lot of misleading statistics and possibly even some moral panic-y stuff happening.
I accidently went through this stoush with my daughter at 15 yrs old - a year ago. I'm Australian You completely nailed it. And as I was asked WHO was that person....
I need to hear this same level of discussion about Jenna Marbles departure from YouTube
sarah and mike + beauty guru drama = content i would consume EVERY DAY On a more serious note -- as an Indigenous listener, I would appreciate and love to see YWA approach Indigenous content. I live in Canada, but I'm sure the US is equally rife with misunderstandings/willful ignorance of history and legislation.
oh my gosh i would listen to an entire show that was just you two empathetic ally explaining silly internet drama... this just made my week!
There is something so relaxing about hearing drama that I am not personally vested in and at the end of the day does not matter at all.
every bit of this was incredible, thank you for indulging
Youtuber drama is one of my guiltiest of all guilty pleasures!! It is tickling my brain to hear you two talk about this.
I thought I was alone in my love for inconsequential YouTube gossip that I’m not at all invested in! ❤️
Yay! This is my first bonus episode as I became a Patreon supporter a couple of weeks ago. Very exciting. I would like to say that I think the Donner party has been mentioned a couple of times in the show and from what I understand, this is also a greatly misunderstood and misremembered story so it would be great if you guys did something about that. I love the show so much. I can’t stop recommending it. You both are so thorough and thoughtful and funny without being mean which is quite hard.
This was so good. Feel free to make any of these on ANY topic, I could hear you guys talk for hours!
I know Sarah is a Reply All fan so I would live to hear your take in the Bon Appetite—> Reply All drama. (I’m still processing)
Seconded!
The amount of YT creators that were like "sorry for blackface" in 2020...
Loved this!
Hair vitamins do absolutely nothing. I’ve been a hairdresser for 12 years and they’re total bs. 😆 Diet and water consumption can have an effect but there’s nothing vitamins can do for hair, especially the lie of making it grow.
...what is this high school bullshit? My brain hurts. This isn't a criticism of you by the way, or the nineteen year old in the story - but anyone over 25 still indulging in this nonsense needs to grow the fuck up.
God I love the two of you so much. I had forgotten all about this drama (yes, I watched the 40 minute video and got pulled into this when it happened, despite not being the demographic for ANY of it) and getting to relive it through the lens of two smart people is pure joy.
Love hearing you discuss this. I don't know how this even got on my radar (I don't follow any YouTubers). But I got way sucked into this drama during quarantine.
I avoid this whole thing until this very podcast episode. Mike and Sarah just make everything more interesting and entertaining!
So often I fantasize about what it would be like if more people listened to the thoughtful and thought provoking convos yinz have. Such care and nuance without holding any punches. This sh*t is ART. <3
I would love to hear your take on the BA Test Kitchen unraveling and now how that intersects with Reply All's recent coverage and Gimliet's own toxic workplace. Reply All seemed like it was doing a good job but it looks like we may not get the rest of the miniseries and i think it would be so interesting to hear your thoughts on it.
I love Reply All. I'm "dealing" with the recent news. And would love to hear smart people hashing it out.
I don’t know anything about any of these Youtubers but I LOVED THIS, please make more, please :)
I reeeaaaallllly want your opinions on Jenna Marbles!!!!!!!! It doesn’t have to be an episode. PLEASE
Love that I just finished mainlining D'Angelo's video series about this exact thing two days ago and then Mike and Sarah drop this today
I loooooove this. I had always wondered why people kind of never talked about the age discrepancies between these youtubers? I find it so bizarre and uncomfortable that these people in their thirties are glomming onto very young kids and not just for their own profit but seemingly on an emotional/not appropriate level too?? Idk it’s so weird!!! More hot takes like this please!!!
Yeah, I am in my mid thirties and just got dial up internet in my teens, thankfully none of my immature thoughts made it onto a platform like YouTube. Grown ass thirtysomething adults manufacturing drama out of teens is so wrong. I look at teenagers and think, what a garbage fire world we gave you and feel protective.
The gen-z serotonin of finding out I watch the same youtubers as sarah and mike
Thank you for supporting my love of trash YouTuber drama!
I'm 2 minutes into the episode and I'm thinking about how much I would love to hear your take on the Sabrina Carpenter/Olivia Rodrigo drama !!
I love hearing you guys talk about this stuff. Excellent bonus ep. If you're looking for more internet drama, you should look into the disintegration of the Call Her Daddy podcast. Its great and a lot like this in that it is a business dispute gone public with a ton of money at risk and each party involved is spinning their own (largely dishonest) narrative. And goddamn Barstool's Dave Portnoy shows up in the middle of it to make a bunch of money and act like a sentient sack of garbage.
Omg I feel like we just skated over the myriad of shitty things Jeffrey star has done(like not paying artists for design work???? His feud with anti-vaxxer Kat Von D???) and just chalked him up to a racist successful makeup company owner when like, he got there by legit manipulating in a very similar way to all of this with Kat Von D. Maybe what I’m saying is this was great and more please ❤️ cause I have been fuming mad about Jeffrey star for literal years.
Was really hoping this episode would touch on some of Contrapoints’ (Natalie Wynn’s) coverage of this in her excellent video about “canceling”.
Hair....vitamins?
this was incredible - and it’s the bonus episode that got me to finally become a supporter. what can I say.... youtube gossip is my weakness
Thanks for this fun extra! As far as future episodes go can we have Sarah talking about skating? I do t know anything except I like watching Jason Brown, but I know there’s so much going on if I wanted to get into it.
Important reminder: just because someone triggers your annoyance alarm, doesn’t mean they’re a predator. But damn James is annoying.
I think my favorite thing said in this episode is Sarah's comment that 19 year olds always want to go to a second location. As the oldest of four sisters, I agree and I am tired (and when my sister turned 19, I said "Congrats, you're the worst at this age and you won't even realize how bad you are until much later).
I've heard this ridiculous drama rehashed again and again for years, but yes I will gladly listen to it all over again
I cannot WAIT to listen
the way i laughed so hard at shane dawson’s audible “scared” breathing during his weird tati clip....i’m going to hell 😭
I don't know what it says about me that THIS is what made me finally join your Patreon, but here we are, better late than never.
Loving the episode so far. I would love for you both to discuss the Freelee the Banana girl drama...it has lived in my head rent free for so long 🥴
I love this please do more! This all brought up repressed memories of watching the Youtuber Alex Day cancellation go down 8 years ago. That was pretty much the last time I watched anything on Youtube lol
I’m nine seconds in and stopped in my tracks when Sarah says about naming your kid, “Eh, you’re Zinnia now” my kid is, in fact, named Zinnia. 😳
Sounds like an opportunity to spin up some theories about the YWA Temporal Mind Control Conspiracy!
My personal rebuttal to people that complain about Cancel Culture when assholes like Jeffrey Toobin get fired is: Well then you should support widespread unionization, and local, state, and federal bans on At Will employment. Because I care a lot more about fast food workers who can get fired for not being cheerful enough than for rich white guys who can get fired for showing their genitalia to their coworkers.
YouTube has so much drama in all sorts of places. There’s Jaclyn Hill as a whole (specifically her several product launches that had major health and safety issues) and then just recently in the Anti-MLM community, there is Kimbyrleigha who became an Anti-MLM creator (after several years of being a YTer) because she got views. Then she stopped doing Anti-MLM content....then she just recently joined the MLM Monat. Also in there, multiple major issues with her membership and just being a not great person. Why are people?!?
Because I'm old I don't know about Youtuber beefs but this also reminds me of the whole Professor Tim Hunt situation. He could totally have apologised, celebrated some women he admired and the whole thing would have gone away. Instead I was having arguments online with people (men) about how laboratories should be separated by sex and we all had to pose on twitter wearing PPE and being #distractinglysexy. But that bit was fun to be honest!
The one thing I think this episode misses out is the financial motivation for these 'youtube beefs'. These posts drive thousands of views to both (montized) channels without either party really having to work on the content. The same thing happens with youtube personalities endlessly interviewing each other on their youtube channels asking "how did you get started with youtube?"
Tangentially related, I've gotten addicted to watching lawyers on YouTube (specifically Emily D. Baker) break down court filings in the Tati/Katie Joy Paulson defamation lawsuit. That is a complete shitshow. The lawyers clearly LOATHE one another and are basically having a pissing contest through motions and I feel like the judge is probably rethinking all of her life choices right now.
I am so excited to see you guys cover this!! On it’s face, it’s a fairly frivolous scandal (the James Charles part at least). But it was a significant moment for a lot of people and it had real life implications. Not sure how you guys would cover her or what the angle would be, but I’d love to hear the YWA take on Trisha Paytas!
I went down a rabbit hole with some YouTube drama about a guy called Onision. Chris Hansen actually pulled up to this dude's front door to talk about his predatory habits. I heard an episode on Yeah No Yeah all about Onision that is really well put together haha... that one did scare me though. I have 4 daughters who are all under the age of 13 right now who spend their lives watching YouTube channels that I simply will never understand the appeal of... anytime that I talk about the predatory lairs that lurk on the internet for pre-teen girls and grooming or my fears about some random person obsessing over my kid and finding their location and taking them, I'm pretty sure that they think I'm talking about a boogieman. My 9-year-old loves James Charles. But every time I take a peek at what she is watching, it looks like he is just playing tag with his friends in a big house. I have no idea. I use YouTube for free docs and compilation videos of people falling. So I'm probably a bit out of touch.
The team from My Dad Wrote A Porno podcast did this amazing episode with Emma Thompson, where Enma read aloud a book she wrote her kid daughter about boundaries, saying no and puberty. It's delightfully funny and sweet and there is this lovely moment where Emma reinforces that if anything feels icky, even she doesn't know why, it's ok to say no and tells even if the ickiness comes from an otherwise friendly person. It's very cool. Emma's daughter said as embarrassing as that was at the time, she appreciated her mums efforts. I am sure your girls appreciate yours :)
I wrote an article on the color symbolism in Dramaggedon, and I'd love to share it with you all! I never published it - I should update it for the 2020 events but anyway: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Nx9m2siUX9QdyAp4zvy4-6Gt8WQOVI87fDGF4nSH2LQ/edit?usp=sharing
Cannot wait to listen to this. I got super invested in the dramageddon megathreads in the beautyguruchatter subreddit even though I rarely watched any of these influencer's videos.
Yesss, glad I’m not the only one! The subreddit threads during all of this were iconic. The way people were so committed to witnessing this sinking ship was astounding.
Not sure if it's episode-worthy, but if anyone else loves internet drama I highly recommend looking into the Channel Awesome story from 2018. Fredrik Knudsen on Youtube has done a few (excellent) videos on it. It has everything: internet personalities from the pre-social media era, horrible work culture, BAD PROJECT MANAGEMENT, and even a shadow villain who isn't in any of the company videos but apparently owns the main IP. Especially fascinating if you watched Nostalgia Critic videos as a teen/young adult, like I did. Also highly recommend the Msscribe story, an absolutely legendary Livejournal-based fandom drama from almost 20 years ago involving sockpuppet accounts, fake stalkers, and... so much more.
YWA x beautuber drama is the hall of fame crossover I never could have dreamed up. These people are just *exhausting* and I remain deeply invested.
Omg I also watched all of D‘Angelo‘s videos on this 😅 love this crossover!
The D'Angelo videos are a MUST WATCH for this YouTube Drama saga
