Buttafuoco Book Club with Jamie Loftus, Part Three

How do you leave a man after becoming notorious for staying by his side? Lolita correspondent Jamie Loftus is back for the third and final part of this book club series on Mary Jo Buttafuoco’s 2009 memoir Getting It Through My Thick Skull—with guest appearances by the not one, not two, but three TV movies about the story. How do you raise a family in the aftermath of a scandal? How do you find yourself after becoming a tabloid caricature? And why does Joey keep lying about everything? The answers to these questions—and a happy ending—lie ahead.

This reminds me when I told someone I was bipolar they asked if I’d ever attacked anyone. 😂

Karina Longworth has an episode about Drew Barrymore's Amy Fisher movie in her erotic 90s series! I gotta go back and relisten to it now.

I would love the movie ep! This was, as always, such a thoughtful, well done series.

On the subject of dramas about the recent past, there was a drama here in England about 2020 released in *2022*, called 'This England' with Kenneth Branagh. It was so weird even seeing trailers for it at the time.

I was sent to one of those inpatient kiddie mental hospitals that were popular with parents in the late 80s/early 90s, for NINE MONTHS. The psychiatrist I saw every week while I was there, he kept telling my parents that I "have psychopathic tendencies and traits"... He said this, because according to this old ass doctor, I "know the difference between right and wrong, but I don't care about the consequences that result when I do something wrong." 😆 I was TWELVE! And the things he was referring to as me "doing the wrong thing", it was stuff like eating something that was not on the bat shit crazy ass diet my mom put me on, because she was overly concerned with the possibility of me potentially gaining weight. I was tall and skinny. So I ate when I was hungry, knowing I'd get grounded for it. These are the consequences that I didn't care about, which apparently meant I had psychopathic traits. That place is still there, it's still open! I'm 52 now.

‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ looms large in my consciousness because it was turned into an episode of ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ starring Barbara Bel Geddes that aired almost a decade before my birth as the mid-life fourth and final child. My mother absolutely loved the story, which should tell you everything you need to know about my parents’ marriage when at 44, my mother had finally had enough when I was six months old. No leg of lamb involved. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I grew up in Chatsworth! Birth until i was 22. I think i had a vague awareness that they lived there at one point. Time to go down the rabbit hole

GREAT episode! Thank you guys so much for always standing up for survivors of abuse in complicated situations. I would LOVE to see an episode or more analyzing the Buttafuoco-Fisher films, especially the Life Rights ones!

Great episode, great onversation! One thing that might be interesting to explore in a future episode: Rei Hance/Heather Donahue's experiences pos Blair Witch's media frenzy. She has a memoir titled "Growgirl: How My Life After The Blair Witch Project Went to Pot," published in 2012.
