Buttafuoco Book Club with Jamie Loftus, Part One
What happens when you are forced into the public eye because of someone else’s immorality? In 1992, a 37-year-old housewife named Mary Jo Buttafuoco barely survived an attack by a gun-wielding 17-year-old girl named Amy Fisher. Amy accused Mary Jo’s husband, Joey, of statutory rape. Joey denied everything. And Mary Jo stood by her man. Why?
In 2009, Mary Jo Buttafuoco released a memoir called Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know, and today, we’re talking about it with Jamie Loftus, host of Lolita Podcast and author of the forthcoming The Tower. We'll discuss the irresponsible way the media portrayed the story, the complicated dynamic between Mary Jo and Amy, and the reasons why women sometimes choose to stay in relationships with problematic or abusive men. Digressions include the Simpsons’ impossible rumpus room, the farce of “writing routines,” and whether a particular sticker dog was able to survive.

Oh, the foot. I once saw aa apartment listing that tried to make a New York neighborhood - style abbreviation of HaFoSaFo and it’s been more than 15 years but I can’t forget it. 🫠
They took the Aunt Millie rotating bread sign in Fort Wayne! Hold your loved ones close
Just looked up the foot sign 😂😵💫😭
OKAY FINE I'll listen to the Amy Fischer episode of YWA for the 23rd time to tide me over until part 2
Since Sarah keeps bringing up the OJ trial I challenge her to watch the Court TV docuseries OJ25 and defense closing arguments in its entirety. You can’t be considered an expert if you haven’t watched the actual trial.
Sarah, would you consider doing audiobooks?
"bed performance anxiety" omg Sarah Marshall I love you so much.
One thing I absolutely refuse to do is wash dishes by hand (sensorially horrific) so I absolutely cannot relate to the glorification of dish washing in the beginning of this episode
So good! Can’t wait for the other parts.
I, of course, have gone down a true crime rabbit hole. It seems like there’s not a ton of information about the guy who sold Fisher the gun and acted as the getaway driver. What’s this guy’s story? Where did he come from?
YWA Book Club is my favorite!!!!
I loved the episode and thought "wonder whatever happened to those kids." https://www.jessiebuttafuoco.com/ Jessie ia trauma-informed media consultant and family therapist! It does my heart good that she made such lemonade with the shitty lemons her father served her.
I need to know the Jimmy Stewart thing that Jamie was going to explain!
When I saw this episode drop, I SCREAMED! I have been dreaming of this episode for 8 years and it's here!!! 🥹
Book club is back! 🥳❤️
Dear Sarah, please consider: portable countertop dishwasher. You will still have to do some dishes every day (pots pans knives etc) but so many fewer. I mean if you're happy with your situation good for you! But if you have the $150 and small area of counter or shelf space for a craigslist tiny dishwasher...highly recommend.
I bought a counter top dishwasher. Best purchase I've ever made.
I love the hot car. Probably because I get cold often and have sore joints so it feels good
I got the notification email and it cut off right at Jamie’s book title in the description, and the excitement I felt! There’s no info on the Macmillan website but I signed up for notifs!
“Wounded Woman Is Improving” merch when?
The sleeping on the couch thing?!?! Have you been reading my diary???? I feel SEEN! 🤪😁💜
That's why I continue to play on my phone or watch a show in my bed. Then the signaling doesn't happen.
