The Past of Christmas Ghosts with Chelsey Weber-Smith
Is the thing we call the Christmas Spirit actually more paranormal than sentimental? It sure used to be, when a big part of the Victorian Christmas tradition was sitting around a crackling fire and telling scary ghost stories. For this two-part series, Sarah and American Hysteria’s Chelsey Weber-Smith resurrect the tradition by digging up the corpses of old ghost-related “true” stories using their favorite website, newspapers.com. You can find the companion episode by subscribing to American Hysteria’s Patreon or Apple+.

While listening to this episode i had a strong feeling that chelsey would enjoy lockwood & co on netflix if they haven't already seen it
And where I’m from, dowsing is very common as is the belief of water witchery. All this means is these people can find water for wells. My late grandmother was one. She had 4 wells on her property. It had nothing to do with spell craft or anything else. It was celebrated in the community and even in the churches.
On his memoir, Bobby Brown (of New Edition) said he had sex with a ghost. It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I think he added something like ,”I know what you’re thinking, and no, I wasn’t on drugs.” Wild, but maybe he was just in touch with the Victorian Era? I have spent the night in haunted houses before, it was uneventful except one time. I think I saw a very polite woman in white. She was making sure we were comfortable. I also have met a sweet ghost who was kind. No sexy stuff though. I am weird. I also had a pet wolf spider I adored at the same time. Wolf spiders are precious!
Have either of you, Sarah and Chelsey, watched the US (or UK for that matter, which came first and is so good) version of the tv show Ghosts? It’s great, and they recently had a lovely plot involving an Egyptian ghost who haunts the rich white lady who stole him from Egypt in the 19th c! It was so satisfying, as a ‘90s Egypt girl.
Thought Sarah meant women would be using THE Stanley Cup in self defense before long, and was making a confusing but fun Heated Rivalry reference, for a second 😅
I thought the thumbnail was a B&W photo of Hansen 🥴
boycott google, switch to something like duck duck go. you can completely toggle off AI anything
I stayed at the Lizzie Borden house and had gay sex all night! Didn't see any ghosts tho
Following the chat about an imaginary ‘Ghost Layer’ British detective TV series in the 1970s - we did actually have something similar! Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) is a policeman whose partner is murdered and he comes back as a ghost to help him, 1969-1970 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randall_and_Hopkirk_(Deceased)
Wait I went to universal earlier this year and they had the ET ride. Are you sure it was removed completely? I had so much fun on it. Def one of my favorites so magical & pretty
The music in the Muppet Christmas Carol is amazing because it was written by Paul Williams!! He also wrote the music for Phantom of the Paradise, which if you don't know, go watch it! 💖💖
Spiritualism died off in the U.S. and became popularized in the UK/ still is. They used to knock on things, but now it’s evidential mediumship. Which tbh, gives more proof than most religions (or any). Evidential mediumship can be proven by neuroscience and also the person who’s loved one’s spirit is being linked to can confirm info that the evidential medium is receiving
Sarah, if you do watch Nicolas Cage's Pig, be prepared to SOB.
As someone whose entire extended family is from Effingham Illinois…..i never thought i would hear it mentioned on this show!!! I have read some of the early 20th c newspaper columns from effingham and surrounding towns and they wrote a lot of silly stuff like this, reported on every birthday party in town, etc etc

Perfect for my flights home. Thank you! Love Chelsea episodes. <3
I desperately need you both to take a trip to Lily Dale in New York state! It’s been a Spiritualist-based town since the late 1800’s, is home to the largest group of practicing mediums in the country, and is just a gorgeous, cool, peaceful, beautiful place. I am the biggest skeptic on earth, and even I couldn’t deny there is something special about Lily Dale.
Thrilled to learn that Sarah and I share the same favorite adaptation of a Christmas Carol, George C Scott’s the best!
My housemate and I have slowly adopted a ghost called “the man upstairs” who is mostly benign but does sometimes inconvenience us. He did everything problematic that neither of us will own up to, like leave crumbs on the counter or hide missing objects. He is a perfect remedy to household tensions and I worry we may lose him if we ever move out
Re: Hating culture from 15 years ago and Millennial optimism, I do actually think there's something to it. As a millennial, I find it very difficult to engage with culture from the Obama years bc of how naive and optimistic it feels now, living in our current world. Judging ourselves for racist/sexist/whatever behaviors feels in line with that!
Duffy and the Devil🤠🤠🤠
I was also dumpster diving in Bellingham, but it was 2013 and businesses had started putting locks on everything. 😑
Found out that wood floors shrink and expand depending on the weather so that’s probably the cause of a lot of “haunted” noises.
Any unexplained noise in my house is "squirrels in the attic" - so I tell myself - and most of the time I find that to be comforting 😄
