128 - Supermarket Sweep
The lads grab their carts and make straight for the turkeys as they cover four iterations of one of America’s favorite game shows: Supermarket Sweep. Topics include the history of supermarkets, the insidiousness of Whammies, and the difficulties of weaponizing 90s nostalgia in the turbulent world of the 2020s.

Hearing Johnny Gilbert say my name was one of the highlights of my life so far. Also I got some other Jeopardy alums into this podcast
Forgive me father for I have synod. Is this anything
I work in retail, and today out of nowhere I was putting away a Supermarket Sweep board game. https://i.imgur.com/Hpz3642.jpeg
Throx: Three. Clorox.
That ad break was *crushing*. Now I'm crying and missing my wife at work :( Very well done.
In regards to what you said about society seeming to feel something coming on the horizon. A few years back there was a show called 'The Last Ship', it was all about American exceptionalism and military propaganda, but it was about a global pandemic that killed millions and caused global society to screech to a halt.....it's last episode aired November 2018
It was also pretty racist in its portrayal of non-American characters, for the record.
RIP Glorb 😢
he sucks. rest in piss
Truly, you are synods in the hands of an angry god.
Around 40:30 I swear I met that exact guy in a bank once
Dog the bounty hunter
There was a place called Great Skates in Bangor,me that was basically one of three cool places to do a party in most of Northern Maine. They had a great arcade, lazertag and skating events all the time. Sadly they went out of business al most 10 years ago. Some of my best birthday parties were there.
The ad break was genuinely one of the most moving things I've heard on a podcast.
Early contender for my favorite commercial break of the year
The wife be gone ad...look, I just went through a breakup. It was felt. Also, theres a skate rink in Holt, MI call Edru Skate rink. it has statues of animals on the roof.
Hello from the British quadrant of Patreons who are now thinking about inflatable bananas and Dale Winston’s loud suit jackets.
AJ there was literally a roller rink in your home town that opened 25 years before Iceoplex did. Ups N Downs was it's name, and yes Brian it very much fit that roller rink narrative: the building was put up before the street, and the buildings adjacent to it were built closer to the sidewalk. Were it not for the equally old and decrepit sign for Ups N Downs, it just looked like an extension of one of the other buildings. Parking lot was little more than an alleyway. Us normal protestant kids spent many a birthday party in both.
I loved playing with my Micro Machines and watching Supermarket Sweep (followed by Designing Women) when I was a kid. This definitely did not presage anything about my gender identity. At all.
There used to be a marine base in LA. EL Toro
someone please tell Josh that the Meijer in west Ann Arbor stays open until midnight, he needs to know
anything short of 24 hours is failure
Imagining a version of Ubik but it's Wifebegone
As a former Missouri Synod Baptist, this episode is creating strange feelings.
went to a roller rink in Rouzerville, PA in the late aughts - your description is fucking dead on :0
The Chlorox ad made my eyes bug out as if I were Bill Malone flashing back to watching his buddies' planes burst into flame over the Solomon Islands.
Jesus Christ even the aliens are Blue-pilled now! What, did John Scalzi write this bit?
As someone who watched the 90s version as a kid, hell yes! Thanks for making my Wednesdays always suck a little less.
Piggly Wiggly was first? The Hoggly Woggly guys won't like this!
the whammies are at home in the mirror; it is their address
You Can't Do That On Television wasn't a game show, it was a Canadian sketch show for young people (and I loved it!).
I think the Legs tier on Patreon needs to get an additional "all of AJ's bits that Brian edited out of the episodes" episode every month. I would definitely up my subscription for this.
