261 - Metal Gear Solid (feat. Manu)
Snake, it’s Colonel Copywriter. I’m responsible for writing the copy for every product in the world. Have you heard of a podcast called The Worst of All Possible Worlds? They do weekly case studies in the pop culture of a dying empire. And this week, they’re talking about YOU, Snake. Specifically, the Shadow Moses Incident. They’ve even brought on their good friend Manu (Podcast Sans Frontieres, NotACast) to gab about everything from The End of History to how close you come to smooching your clone-brother. The episodes are a lot of fun, Snake, even if they can get a bit irreverent from time to time. You should give it a listen. Also, you can pause the podcast at any time by pressing the pause button.
Manu: Bluesky
Podcast Sans Frontieres: A Metal Gear Solid analysis podcast.
NotACast: is the one true chapter by chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week. Hosted by ASOIAF losers ... er, experts PoorQuentyn and ManuclearBomb, this is the place where you can get your ASOIAF fix with weekly episodes that dive deep into each chapter in the book series -- giving special attention to theme, story, plot, character, theories and literary analysis. We also call Renly a godless terrorist who was brought to justice.

Cannot wait for you guys to get to ground zeros. It's fucking incredible
Rewatched the MGS cutscene movie after listening to this, and I noticed that Cam Clarke was credited as "James Flinders" in Liquid Snake's first appearance. I looked this up and from what I could find online, he was in a 1974 stage production of Saturday's Warrior (I think as Jimmy)? That was an unexpected discovery. I probably wouldn't have made the connection if I hadn't listened to the Saturday's Warrior TWoaPW episode recently. Great ep for an excellent game. I hope we'll see more MGS series episodes in the future!
I remember hearing somewhere that a Decoy Octopus boss fight was originally planned but it got cut due to the technical limitations of the PS1 - hence why he appears in the manual, briefing etc. like all the other bosses, but isn’t fought like them.
I don’t usually comment in the middle of listening, but I hope y’all go back to how fucking *toxic* the premise of “a soldier can never stop being a soldier” is. That premise in such an influential game has got to have *fucked up* a bunch of GWOT veterans. Snake is the embodiment of “men will do anything rather than go to therapy.”
the timing of this episode, my god. my husband is a HUGE MGS fan, and it is one of our running jokes that I always have to ask him to explain what the fuck is happening as I watch him play. We also do this with the Duneiverse, Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter lore, and anything with anime. he self-admitted himself into the hospital on Thursday for a mental health crisis, and I loved and appreciated being able to listen to this episode and laugh along with the silliness of these games while I was driving all over the place to bring him clothes from home. thank you for being my escape from how hard the real world is right now 💖
Im from the DC area and we have a convention called Otakon. Apparently Prof Otacon was named after the co mention, and hearing "Just like my Japanese anime" hit even harder because of it.
SIGNALIS MENTIONED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man this sniper wolf fight sounds awful. Can’t believe she still got invited to creator summit this year after all that
Game recommendation: Hyperlight Drifter
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word “indiginaity” before. Cool!
I can't wait for them to get to ReVengeance and have to make double-sure they're quoting MGRR and not the Incorrect Summary to MGRR
Yes… Ha ha ha… Yes!
…so I couldn’t possibly have been the only person listening to this episode and repeating every proper noun with an interrogative tone, right? RIGHT???
interrogative tone, huh?
Having never played a metal gear game I have no way of knowing whether the interstitial was actual cut content or that was just a framing device
RIDGE RACER ODDWORLD WINNING ELEVEN THE GAMES ON THE PLAYSTATION
1:09:something, did I only just now realize that the "legend" of solid snake is just a rock hard dick joke? 😅 poor depressed snake. 🥲
Cool Voltaire?!...
Cornel this is just like my worst of all possible worlds podcast
Someone once monologued the whole lore backstory of MGS to me over dinner in about the same runtime as this podcast episode. I’m buckled up.
I'm not to ant sniper wolf parts yet but I wanted to comment this now: I've cheesed her by killing her with Nikita missiles before.
Thinking of MGS reminds me of a good memory of an old friend. I was playing through specifically to get the otacon ending, and this friend had just come downstairs as Snake and Otacon were having their final talk. When they got to the Hal and Dave line and said maybe they could go to Jupiter together, my friend exclaimed "OR PERHAPS URANUS, BABY" and went back upstairs
Nothing getting frisson/nostalgia knuckle sandwich listening to THAT song I some how forgotten. Boom baby the Playstation all day!!
The book "Shameless: The canine and the femenine in ancient greece" might be of interest to Manu, it explores certain semiotic constelations of ambivalence that echo even to now
Setting my ringtone to LiquidDies.wav
Snake? SNAKE? SNAAAAAAAAAKE?
Nice little snack after those players club ep lengths
I am so glad that someone out there other than me remembers that Eifel 65 song! It worms its way from the recesses of my brain every now and then and I've never met another person who knew what song I was talking about.
You won, I subscribed. I get the Bad ending now.
Fantastic thumbnail gents.
MSX eh.....plus that outer wilds episode a while back......................sounds like you guys need to do a la mulana episode.......................
Interstitial is perfectly demented, as good as the best Tap Tap.
Grey Wolf? Jesus christ dude.
The Metal Gear Solid games hold a special place in my heart. Especially MGS3.
In fact Tapioca is poisonous unless properly fermented or mashed through the correct filters
At 53 you could just have said "it's where the military grade fursuits are kept "
I think a big part of why visual novels didn't really hit it off until the ds era was more to do with the restrictions and difficulties they had translating the more meaningfully dense kanji into English words and letters on the hardware available at the time. I know you guys talked about Pokemon forever ago but I recall it coming up in that too to explain why the English translations of the early games were so... Esoteric.
I like shorts. They're comfy and easy to wear!
Just like my American podcasts
I know that you said not to talk about later additions to the continuity, but the original Big Boss actually being Venom Snake is one of the most compelling meta twists I've ever seen in a video game. He's not really Big Boss, but he's actually the truest Big Boss.
Hell yeah
My snake solid, my gear metal, and my podcast the worst possible. Black and white till I die ¡Viva the Southside, Viva la Villita!
Haven't even listened yet but YEAHHHHHHHHHHH
Kept us waiting, huh?
Manifested this
Aw yeah banger episode incoming
Metal Gear?
It's a Japanese action stealth game series created by Hideo Kojima and developed by Konami. The first game, the titular "Metal Gear", was released in 1987 for the MSX home computer. In it, you play and Solid Snake, a special forces soldier tasked with finding the Metal Gear, a walking Mecha with the ability to launch nuclear missiles.
