For this week’s newsletter we’re returning to Northern Ireland to examine a recent story about alleged hate crimes being perpetrated in connection with traditional Loyalist celebrations. (Yes, shocker.)

„Who‘s gonna kill a missionary“ I‘ve seen a lovely painting with a leopard/tiger answering that very question
This fits well with your previous stuff about Northern Ireland, as the only place in the UK where Evangelical Fundamentalist Protestantism has a serious embedded presence and real political power- right down to the financial, spiritual, theological and physical links with their American Evangelical cousins.
I mean it's not that I DON'T think Elon Musk sees himself as a kind of religious leader or prophet but I think the primary reason he said "Vox Populi, Vox Dei" is because he thinks saying stuff in latin makes him sound well-read and profound
I've said it before, I'll say it again: FASCISM IS A VIBES BASED IDEOLOGY. There is no consistency or coherence to it, it simply acts as a vessel to direct anger and discontent towards some vaguely defined goal. It is the ideology of idealism taken to the extreme. This is what makes it so fluid and so useful to the establishment as a tool to redirect the masses away from genuinely emancipatory ideology and movements.
Yes, Know Your Enemy has a good episode about this: https://dissentmagazine.org/online_articles/know-your-enemy-did-it-happen-here-fascism-debate-trump/
The mental image of Greg's growing horror hearing about Focus on the Family and Adventures in Odyssey for the first time is just hilarious.
Only thing I fell for is a teenager was the midwester Catholic/ Lutheran belief that you're going to hell for cranking it, and oddly in 10th and 11th grade Apocalypse nonsense that terrified the shit out of me. Thanks, You Don't Know Jack. I spectrum ass took the jokes too seriously.
The Baptist’s debate over slavery in the 1840s was a bit more material than theological. Baptists were not of the slaveholder class so the question was moot until they started preaching to and converting their wealthy neighbours. The religious justification followed the influx of money. There’s a good historical parallel with abortion.
As a listener of Whit’s Endless Summer the squee I squeed hearing these voices ….
You should read/reach out to Kristin Kobes Du Mez who wrote Jesus and John Wayne. There's obviously a gender angle of this podcast that y'all are circling sometimes. She's hits a good intersection of some of these things. Thank you for this episode! I love hearing people outside of the US learning about our country's crazy religious shenanigans. Very satisfying. Very cathartic.
Twoapw how shall we than live ep when?
YESSSSSSSSSSSS.
Have you heard the good news?
