244 - Gamer (feat. maia arson crimew)
maia arson crimew joins the lads for a gruesome game of Slayer and a quick round of Society as they cover the rich text of toxic masculinity that is Neveldine/Taylor’s 2009 murderfest: Gamer. Topics include Michael C. Hall’s puppet moves, the film’s deep fear of penises, and what it means to live in a world where tech billionaires want to control your every thought.

Jesus Christ. The audio from this movie was truly disturbing.
They blew a serious opportunity for an AJs Horse Corner while talking about Crank 2.
During the one clip where you talked about the dialogue, did he just tell her to “stop menstruating?” Yikes, when an insane thing to say. And I don’t even think someone who was that type of sexist would think to use that word. Also, I took a playwriting class in college and had a specific character that dropped the F bomb nearly every line. I think I… Got the syntax of the swearing wrong? Because I don’t even swear that much and was just doing it to try to make him worse. I don’t know if it worked.
Game Good
I considered watching this movie but even my love for Michael C Hall can’t overcome my antipathy towards Gerard Butler
Fun fact: Sandra Bullock won a Razzie and Oscar in the same year for All About Steve and The Blind Side
You know what movie says a lot about society? Society.
Wait, when did Josh get hugged by Terry Crews?
He was on Who Wants to be A Millionaire. Spoiler: he did not become a millionaire.
This is an insanely heinous movie.
I watched the Red Letter Media review of Crank 2 right before I saw this in my feed, so funny on the timing of this. I don't really get the appeal of films like this or "Hobo with a Shotgun," where everyone is a raging sociopathic asshole. It just makes me not care about any of the characters. It's not about the violence, as I enjoy "Mad Max: Fury Road" or "Dredd," it's purely that without someone to cheer for, a plot is just a sequence of events.
I love maia in every guest episode. I never saw Gamer, but I adore the clip of Terry Crews singing. The coverage of cyberpunk and gaming in general is great on TWOAPW, it’s important to understand them and I appreciate the treatment you’ve given these topics.
I have so many hours in Mario Kart 8 that hearing the title theme play in the interstitial felt like a directed psychic attack
aaaah, Gamer exactly how i remember it horrendous politics and a plot that makes you feel like you must have fallen asleep at some point
it's me, maia
Some of the discussion triggered a memory of a 70s B-movie called "Americathon", starring John Ritter, Harvey Korman and Fred Willard. You might consider it for "Cheese Month" (if such a thing exists).
Neveldine/Taylor are what would happen if Paul Vehoeven grew up a numbed, disaffected Gen Xer instead of in Nazi occupied Amsterdam.
I'm NGL, something about the mental image of two idiots throwing dildos at alligators in non-descript bayou really struck me AJ, so thanks for that interstitial
Chain Gang All Stars has a very similar premise (a death game to escape prison) and executes it so, so much better
You should watch death race 2000 for a better more 70s version of this movie
"let's smoke another joint and think of more ideas" is my new catchphrase. i'm stealing it. thank you maia.

so on the blood... it doesn't actually fluoresce under UV. hence the need to use a chemical agent like luminol that reacts with the iron in blood to then fluoresce under uv. But also like one would expect ... like what fun in using people and not extracting sensation? the using people as avatars feels so fundamentally uninteresting
oh that actually explains a lot! i still feel like more movies should do UV glowing blood splatter in club action scenes, it goes hard!
