234 - Bernard After Reading (feat. Brooke from I Hate James Dobson) [Whit’s Endless Summer 51]
Brooke from the I Hate James Dobson podcast joins the lads in Odyssey for further adventures in local access television, getting boils in the land of Uz, and the increasingly diabolical schemes of the Novacom Corporation. Topics include the questionable accent choices, the dubious ethics of Whit’s latest invention, and what it means to craft a serialized plot where you rail against the evils of teaching kids about pollution.
I Hate James Dobson: Join therapists Jake (a former Evangelical) and Brooke (who knows almost nothing about Evangelical culture) as they read and tear apart Dobson’s works. Get ready to laugh, cry, and rip your hair out as we explore the very many reasons why I Hate James Dobson.

brooke not good guest
Fucking hell, I remember the episode about Job. It ruined my fucking life for a while. The soundbite of Job's wife saying "curse god and die" was an insane intrusive thought for me after listening to this episode as a kid. I was distraught whenever it would play in my head, because I was scared that God could hear my thoughts (as evangelicals are taught), and that I was actually cursing god and wishing death upon myself. I would force myself to immediately follow up that thought with, "No, I will not." like it says in the episode. It was terrible.
oh that's the Yoshi's Island theme just. straight up.
I will pay for a "Brian does Biblical Interpretation" spin-off.
Would love to hear a full episode on your thoughts about VeggieTales and Phil Vischer!
Credit to Rosemary who figured it out. It also drove me crazy. But it's but the song is from mario kart 64 Sherbet Land, made a comparison video with both songs right after each other https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VIqOQzPE-g
whoa i was thinking of the tetris attack theme but it's also definitely this
SO cool to hear Brooke on another blog! :D
That bullying episode reminds of a thing I've noticed where Evangelicals see people as either being "good" or "bad" and only ever seem to punish "good" people. The reasoning seems to be that you need to appease bad people because you can't do anything about them, but you need to punish good people so they don't become bad. Deeply fun to be on the receiving end of it.
Evangelicals construct God as a raised fist. "True" punishment is his domain, and it is humanity's duty to appease Him so the fist does not fall on us. Coincidentally, this normalizes abusive dynamics, both by priming victims to view their abuse as a thing they are responsible for averting, and then also priming victims and abusers both to view mortal acts of abuse as not being "really" abusive, because there is always a bigger fist and whatever we do amongst ourselves doesn't really rate by comparison.
Brooke what’s your StoryGraph username
Is the game in question startropics?
There's a new and exciting thing in town that has nothing to do with Wit and his dumb ice cream shop. Big wonder why he's not thrilled about it
Walker Edmiston as Job sounds remarkably like he’s trying to lay a very large egg
I Slap Floor to all who celebrate 🙏 I finished my Edwin/Shakespeare/Richard threesome fic after only 8 months of having 90% of it done so I’d say I’m celebrating pretty good
Oh shit Another Man’s Shoes was released the day I was born. Unfortunate
AJ, keep Ohio’s name out your fucking mouth
This episode was amazing! You should make it a point to have Brooke and/or Jake as guests ever six months.
I think I have found the Nintendo Song Josh is searching for. It is a motif for Yoshi. I've selected the earliest version of it I am aware of. Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island - Track 2 - Yoshi's Island I have found at least one other track built on this motif (Paper Mario - Welcome to Yoshi's village) and suspect there are more. I can't be sure which version of the motif Josh is remembering. Hope this was correct! Edit: I should've loaded the older comments first. The true correct answer was Tetris Attack.
The music cues in this particular collection of episodes go dangerously hard.
It’s Mario Kart: Double Dash!! And… please make the Job’s Wife shirt 😂
okay Bernard sounds more and more to me like Schmitty from the Jackbox games to me
Bernard looking like mike stoklasa really fucks me up because the way he's voiced sounds like he should be whit's age
Holy shit your right!
Whit is like a Christian Timothy Leary
It's fascinating that they portray a father not wanting his son to be a "flower loving sissy boy" as the villain of the story? You'd think they'd take issue with Brock breaking "traditional gender norms", or whatever the fuck they'd call it, and that they'd support "correcting" that behaviour, but maybe that's more of an early Odyssey sort of thing
In an earlier episode about book-burning, the lads made an excellent point: The show drives it home saying the religious right shouldn't be that way because it's crass and drives folk away. They want their homophobia in the state legislature, after all.
Aerobiz Supersonic (SNES)
Book of Job God sounds a lot like Crom or Khorne. "YAHWEH CARES NOT FROM WHERE THE BLOOD FLOWS, ONLY THAT IT FLOWS!", or alternatively "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST FUCKING SAY ABOUT ME, YOU LITTLE BITCH? I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW THAT I BUILT THE FOUNDATION OF HEAVEN AND EARTH..." etc.
That tend to your own ad is so deeply sinister--the fact that they use lawns to explain envy betrays like a weird suburban ideological fetish, but also the subtext is that if you're feeling envious, you're probably right to feel that other people are better than you lmao
Pretty sure it’s Double Dash or Mario Golf for the GameCube. I’m more sure it’s Mario Golf for the GameCube
I love how no one mentioned that Another Man's Shoes is basically The Cobbler. I mean, both McCarthy and Sandler might have forgotten that one too.
You guys gotta do a full Veggietales episode at some point
Yoshi's island?
Re: Josh’s Nintendo ear worm: is it Yoshi’s Island?
really wanted the theme to be from Super Mario Odyssey
Germany mentioned! *starts vigorously and rhythmically clapping*
The intro to that show made me think of sherbet land from mario kart https://youtu.be/fW-hUbIQbo0?si=U_PRGJ0NcbPGT7T2
Josh, It’s the title theme from Tetris Attack https://youtu.be/rDdC8SaB0uA?si=fAU8aTl1aK-zXcgc
Wow! That did not take long XD
Hooray, Brooke! Gen X represent!
Omg it's Brooke. This is gonna be great
