229 - The Dutch Knight Returns [Whit’s Endless Summer 50]
The lads return to Odyssey for more adventures in fractured fairy tales, the start of the Novacom Saga, and the final and fond farewell to everyone’s favorite devious Dutchman: Dr. Regis Blackgaard. Topics include Phil Lollar’s long-awaited goodbye, the logistics of time portals, and what it means to stare down Odyssey’s next big movement in serialized storytelling.

Re: Opening Day OMFG "The Hound of Heaven". I haven't thought about that poem in decades. I swear, one of these days y'all are going to play just the right clip and I'm going to go Winter Soldier and join YWAM in a fugue state or some shit.
I LOVED the seven deadly dearves episode as a kid but I might just have bad taste
Thank you for reminding me of Bridge to Terabithia, now I’m sad,but also it was horse corner so I laughed
I swear I would listen to an entire show made up of these interstitials.
I loved Little Dogs On The Prairie, I quote THE SNAKE IS THE SINGER, THE SINGER IS THE SNAKE on an at least monthly basis. There is a CRAZY JFK assassination joke in the Stealin' episode that hit me like a freight train when I rewatched them last year.
I think this is my favorite Patmos interstitial
It is a shame you guys don't really cover books/audiobooks because I would love to hear your takes on the "Tennis Shoes among the Nephites" series of Mormon fantasy books.
I just need anyone to know that I was listening to this, and scrolling through some social media at the same time, and the moment Brian said “The German Episode” I hit a video post of a thunderstorm that autoplayed. So what I experienced was Brian saying that, and then immediate lightning and thunder. It really added something.
Josh, I have the exact same feelings of "cringe nostalgia". It is a horrible thing to remember something you liked as a kid but which sucks word for word. Young You is always incredibly stupid and annoying, we never had good taste when we were kids.
The completely random mad libs jokes of the third episode reminds me a lot of the Cartoon Network MAD magazine tv show adaptation, where they would combine two completely unrelated pieces of media as a parody, like Twilight and The Big Bang Theory, or LinKong which was Lincoln and King Kong. The jokes never landed, it was always just random pop culture references. The only good part of the show was the animate adaptations of Spy vs Spy.
well great, now i'm gonna be mumbling "Yo-yo Yokai Hokkaido A-Gogo" for my entire workday
I have never found another person even tangentially familiar with 3 2 1 penguins. That goddamn theme song still pops into my head and I am 31.
Does anybody remember the vhs series about rocks?? Maybe in space? God rocks ?? Something about soap on a rope.
I'm here for the Commander Shepard reference, AJ.
at 1:43:00 where the Odyssey narrator used the phrase “australian aborigine” i got suuuuch a shock lol, thats been considered like, increasingly insensitive since like the 70s, to the point of being seen as actively racist these days
let's go Brian bits baby love da Brian bits
Also, the weird seven deadly dwarves episode just sound like those punny Xanth books. I remember those having "Guardian Angles" who were literally a triangle with wings.
Give it 10 years and the radio tower would be involved in with G5.
Both Earl Boen and Kenneth Mars could take meaningless scribbles on a paper bag and still turn them into absolute theater. Such talented actors.
Y'all have mentioned Odyssey inspiring FNAF before, but I am still flabbergasted by this digital ghost Blackgaard just being Glitchtrap, right down to the merge/resurrection plan. I guess it makes the direction make more "sense" in retrospect...
SMITHPONYAN WAS RIGHT THERE GUYS
The Smythponyan Museum of Neightural Horsetory
I'm always saying I like the Brian Bits but I'm now realizing I may have the voices confused.
#worstiewomen4brianbits
To Brian'st it may concern:
The Brian part was my absolute favourite bit
Gotta admit, that was a fantastic interstitial. Total credit to the script, the performances and the editing of it. Like damn that was good.
I got to meet Charlotte de Witte after her set at Movement in 2018, and lemme say, Snow De Witte would have been pretty fitting.
that’s a big lol from josh
Ok but I do love the overdone Brian bits.
febisney
Mutton is adult sheep
Oh shit wait a jungle jam episode is possibly on the table? Don’t tease me like this
I love how Brian's Don Draper bleeds into an Obama and AJ's Bert Cooper bleeds into a Nixon
It’s a running joke to me and only me that Scott Cawthon totally stole the idea of Glitchtrap from Blackgaard’s Revenge, but relistening to it is making it less outrageous. Like, Scott has definitely listened to Odyssey. The idea of the spirit of an evil man possessing and trapped inside a computer program, luring a girl/young woman into a vr machine so they can swap places/mind meld, all while grooming them into doing their bidding… I’m just saying, I’d call MatPat if he wasn’t retired
Also I think the evil laugh was a bit much, but Blackgaard opening fire and then turning around immediately and saving her, throwing her off-balance emotionally and psychologically is a level of gaslighting that’s so subtle I didn’t think was possible in the hands of Phil Lollar. The way he normally beats you over the head with the point, just giving us that tiny moment of “oh, wait… was I wrong for assuming he’s attacking me? Am I remembering the last few moments wrong?” It’s staggering.
I think opening AJ's Horse Corner, then shifting to AJ's Horse Mourner, then closing AJ's Horse Mourner, but *not* closing the original Corner means that the entire podcast is now a Horse Corner?
Y'all gotta know- this weird Christian slop is what got me on your patreon. The first things I listened to were all of the Endless Summer and I sorta... got to the rest of it later. So for whatever it's worth, these are my favourite episodes. I know it hurts, keep making them forever (edit: please)
Surprised you guys haven't done a Mass Effect episode. There'd be some meat on that bone.
Oh hell yes that would be so good
Circa 56:34–this IS a stolen plot point, it is from the Raul Julia made-for-TV joint Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, made famous by MST3k!
I have listened to all of these Whits Endless Summer episodes and lemme tell you I have never *groaned out loud* like I did when you played audio from that seven deadly dwarves episode. Oh brother
Having gone through the whole back catalogue of premium episodes over the last month, as a new patron, I'm now imagining all the interstitial characters as Animal Crossing humans
Phil Lollar tried make Christian gravity falls?!
I will say the opening one-man play from Blackgaard Begins is my favorite bit of all time and I relisten to it so often I should be lobotomized.
You and me both, pal. That and the montage that shows AJ that he needs to become a Southern Baptist are permanently embedded in my brain.
TWOAPW women R I S E!!!
evangelicals have such a weird hang up with thinking people don’t believe jesus was a real guy/wasn’t crucified. like it’s not hard to believe he was killed for challenging the power structures of the time, it’s just the the crazy miracles and resurrection that are a bit of a stretch.
Blackgaard is back! Now's as good a time as any to put forth my headcanon for his appearance. I've always imagined him to look like Leonardo Leonardo from the Clerks animated series (tbh I think Alec Baldwin was emulating Earl Boen when he voiced that character.)
More? There’s more of this dude?
I get vanishingly few of the references on this podcast that I love but I will come to AJ's defense and say that I did get the Commander Shepherd reference.
the great wishy woz did incredible psychic damage on this young child and I truly think hearing AJ suffer would heal me
The brian parts are my absolute favorite
This episode has a top shelf AJ's Horse Corner
Wait, a marriage? So the thrupple is official!?! 🎉🎉🎉
The other three women , sound off in chat
Blackgaard feels a bit like the white witch at the beginning of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Knowing how often they suck CSL’s ghost dick, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was intentional
LITTLE DOGS ON THE PRAIRIE MENTIONED
used to obsessively watch this when i was a kid, i still have fond memories ngl
Barely 10 mins into the episode and we get a "Im Commander Shepard..." joke. Beautiful! Never change AJ
Also, a mass effect episode(s) when?
For some reason I half expected a DBZ guitar riff when I hear "last time on Adventures in Odyssey
I've blitzed through the entire catalog of TWOAPW episodes in the last 4 months (why yes my mental health is great, why do you ask?) and was regretting not having anything new to listen to while falling asleep, so, cheers 💤
