179 - The Room (2003)
How did the lads meet? Well that’s a very interesting story, when Brian and A.J. moved to New York with two suitcases and didn’t know anyone and they have-uh-they head to YMCA with a $2000 check which they could not cash. Why? Well, because it was an out of state bank. Anyway, uh- they were working as busboys in a hotel, and uh-uh Josh was sitting, drinking his coffee, and he was so beautiful, and they say hi to him. That’s how they met. What’s the interesting part? Well the interesting part is that after their first recording, Josh paid for dinner.

I wish I could locate The Village Voice article from 2006 where Wiseau claims he got the money from importing leather jackets from Korea.
Stress in Polish words always falls on the second-to-last syllable!
My first exposure to this movie was that one time on April fools day where Adult swim played it front to back like three times
The funniest use of censor bars in television history.
I have no prior knowledge of this movie outside of this podcast, but now I might have to watch it because I’ve never heard anyone say “hi babe” in a more fake sounding way. All of these line readings are so weird! Also, the three of you should get the gross sounding pizza and try it to see if it’s good. The commercial is like if the guy from American psycho had no charisma .
The laughter is actually because he actually has an address on Guerrero Street and Greg needed him to get through the scene without blowing the take and get some genuine emotion, so he freaked him out by using a place he knew Tommy had an address that Tommy didn't know he knew about. So he triggered a paranoid reaction in Tommy to finish the scene and got something even creepier than needed into the film.
the references to origami ceiling cat and "amazing horse" caused me to briefly dissociate and become worried that I might have lived with AJ in college
I was a huge fan of The Room in uni and met Tommy and Greg. After reading the Disaster Artist and seeing the movie, the experience was sort of ruined for me, for the misogynistic reasons you mentioned. However, this episode took me back and it might be time to dust off the ol’ spoons one more time.
I wonder how many other people first understood the deep misogyny of The Room thanks to hBomberguy.
That is easily hbomber guys best video, really informative in how a lot of men are and behave in relation to women
Can't wait for the follow-up episode with November Kelly, the videogame LP.
Oh speaking of future episodes, when you inevitably cover DUNE, you had *better* re-record the theme song as 'so many possible worms' because come on.
Tommy Wiseau, Ultimate Photocopier (Danganronpa character screen)
Wiseau is the most American person to ever exist.
one of the best extras moment is in the Law & Order episode of Community where you see a background extra walk out of a building in the background and zip up his pants and is immediately followed by another extra who wipes her mouth and they both walk off screen.
the DS2 pull is crazy lmao absolutely unhinged level design tho
Yeah its me, this was the episode that broke me into getting on the patreon. This and getting the part 2 of the ff7 episode
Same

Thanks, I specifically checked the comments to find this.
Ok so I decided after listening to this episode to get the dvd of this off amazon, deserves a spot in the collection right. When I open the dvd inside the box there is no shit, a glossy photo of a shirtless Tommy wiseau and on the back is a info card for Tommy Wiseau underwear
Disappointed you don’t mention my favorite part of the pizza scene, which is that you can see it like 5 different times and it is a perfectly normal cheese pizza
As a San Francisco native, we all have a problem with Lombard street.
Was listening to this and thinking “huh Tommy W sounds like if you put Musk and Trump in the machine from The Fly” and then heard the bit about taking forever to go down some stairs and -*is hit by the Alan Moore beam*- oh god a sprawling epic about a polish family brought over from the iron curtain to get cheap west coast defense industry land in exchange for running or processing CIA heroin ending up bankrolling the Hollywood dreams of their severely emotionally and sexually stunted “nephew” (feel free to get as weird with that as you want) who accidently makes compelling outsider-art obsessed with Americana and American dominance that is then co-opted for profit by actual American cultural elites and*- I’m sorry what was I talking about?
I'll never comment about mispronounciations, but I think drawing attention to how difficult something is to pronounce is a bit unnecessary as long as you give it your honest best shot, which I think you guys always try to!! I think it can come across as being a bit othering of certain kinds of name, sometimes (not you guys in specific, just that kind of comment in general). (I had a Polish friend in high school, and our teachers would either never try to pronounce it, or they'd make a joke about it, every time, so it is just something I've thought about a lot recently.)
I can understand AJ not being able to say “oiseau” ; French spelling isn’t very intuitive. But how did he fuck up saying “Murakami” twice lol. PS thank you guys for having my weird sense of humor. Especially AJ’s abrupt veers into depression/horror. Just like my life!
I listened to this on my commute. It took every ounce of energy not to yell out "Leave your stupid comments in your pocket!" during my class discussion because none of my students bothered to do the reading.

I'm more familiar with live sound than I am studio sound. But that definitely sounds like a software issue. Any recent updates to your recording software or the computer's audio codec?
I haven't made any updates but I think you're right about it being a software issue. None of the glitches came through the monitor while recording. I think, going forward, I'm going to restart the computer before each recording session if it's already on, and get a new USB C cable. And not use that channel
I’ve talked about this film with one of my older film buff friends, and he told me about the magic of going to a midnight screening before The Room really hit the popular Zeitgeist. I think you can still find a fun experience at one of these screenings, but similar to Rocky horror, I don’t know if it’s possible to capture the magic of every single person in the theater responding to all the inside jokes, knowing to bring props, etc.
thanks for this episode—this is a blind spot in my millennial experience, mostly because I have to leave the room when something I'm watching gets that awkward. I do get all of the early 00s internet references though, in fact, fgsfds
Obsessed with how Denny says “leave us!” At the end like he’s a king in game of thrones dismissing the servants
Oh Hai boys, you're my favorite podcasters
Actually, Armin Van Buuren played Quark on Deep Space 9
The boys are boysing, and it's beautiful
When I saw The Room at the Music Box in 2016, I asked Tommy if he was influenced by Mulholland Drive, and he yelled “WHO FUCKING CARES?!?!?”
what a story, charli!
you guys running Bay to Breakers this year?
you need to polish your Es. sz makes sh. but it's okay, no one pronounces us correctly
Oh dammit I did a Hungarian sz
You are tearing me apart, cool Voltaire!
Hahaha, what a story TWoAPW!
Best bad movie. "Anyway, how's your sex life?" Is forever my favorite question
