Fancy Movie Time #26: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010)

In this episode of Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., the Fancy Lads head for the Thai countryside to do battle with death as they cover Apichatpong Weerasethakul's 2010 surreal monkey-ghost-a-palooza: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Does the film's adherence to Weerasethakul's confident style and deep philosophical musings make it a Fancy Feast? Or do its flat tone and lack of deep characters make it a Failure to Fancy? One thing's for sure: those two vultures in The Jungle Book sure do sound like the Beatles!!!

The lord dunsany play Brian is talking about is “The Laughter of the Gods” if you are one of the 12 dunsany fans in the world like me

We had the Incredible Mr Limpet on VHS, and I watched it hundreds of times as a kid

I always enjoy the weird voice with which AJ first says the title of the movie at the beginning of the episode.

I cannot tell you the deep existential fulfillment I found in the 2nd appearance of Editor A.J. and his exponential headwear.

In Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping when asked if he can survive a wolf attack Seal responds with "How do you think I got these scars". The Latin for wolf is lupus. At no point in that movie does anyone mention that he has discoid lupus erythematosus.

Kratt's Creatures almost certainly covered spawning, I'm pretty sure I remember that.

Weerasethakul is a fantastic director to start investigating, he’s really idiosyncratic about film and just reading his thoughts on the spectacle of film as his films de-emphasize immediate spectacle in many ways is so beautiful. He did an exhibit at Le Centre Pompidou that was maybe one of the only good filmed exhibits in a museum I’ve ever seen because Weerasethakul fully understands the 3rd and 4th dimensions beyond the screen. If you can get one of the region unlocked blu ray editions of Memoria that were sold only in Europe, it’s a great pick for a Fancy Movie Time
