Recommendations video! What are your top three queer films?

Hello!

Time once again for this month's Recommendations video, where I share recommendations sent along by fellow Patrons. We've got a heaping helping this month, starting with some responses to last month's question: "Was there a British version of Rock Hudson?" Boy howdy, there sure was.

Also! We've got some suuuuuper obscure TV shows to check out, including one with a gay actor playing a spy who directly inspired Austin Powers. (Yes, this means Austin Powers is gay. Those are the rules.)

Also also! I would like to know what films are on your top-three list of queer movies. Drop your list in the comments.

Also also also! If you are a Discord expert, please get in touch, because I have some questions.

Thanks again for all your great recommendations, please keep them coming!

Not a film. But an episode you might be interested in Matt. The show Cold Case had an episode about a girl that was killed on prom night and as they progressed they realized the boy she was involved with was living on his own at that time. The looked further and realized the girl was a transfemale and they conclude that they slept together on prom night and the boy discovered the truth and grew angry and killed her, but when they confronted him all these years later he denied it. He said no no I knew her real true self and I loved her and wanted to spend my life with her. They believe him and look further and found that there was evidence the boy's father had been there that night and he pulled a Blake Carrington and murdered the poor innocent girl thinking he was protecting his son from this person he loved because he somehow found out how she was born and by doing so ruined his son's life. Sorry I don't recall more details as it has been decades since I saw this. If you want me to research more email me at sdlittle13@gmail.com.

Department S and Jason King are both worth a look, if only for the major early 70's comfort TV vibes they exude, plus the extreme kitsch of everything design-related, costuming included. Department S, in particular, is the far better one with its unhinged storylines and better writing and etcetera. On a related note, Peter Wyngarde's 1970 album "When Sex Leers Its Inquisitive Head" is a real point of interest. "Head" is, ostensibly, a tongue-in-cheek spoken-word comedy/concept album concerning "the darker side of human behaviour", in the album's words. As the Dangerous Minds article about this album says, it's "spectacularly wrong and offensive on every level" and "debauched libertine madness a go-go". (https://dangerousminds.net/comments/peter_wyngarde_when_sex_leers_its_inquisitive_head) Indeed, the entire thing is so insane, you'd have to hear it to believe it; particularly one of the lead singles "Rape". But bringing it back to the subject at hand, one of the songs, "Hippie And The Skinhead" is a song where Wyngarde is reading a letter from a newspaper column about a hippie called "Billy the Queer" who nearly suffers a gay bashing by a skinhead he fancies at a bar. This article explaining the album's origins does it better than I can in one overlong comment: https://members.optusnet.com.au/~waynedavidson/jkmusic.htm

Hiya!! I'm so glad you mentioned Beautiful thing!! I saw it for the first time when I was 16-17, just like the main characters and I couldn't feel more related. So, even though Beautiful thing would definitely make my top 3, other queer films I love are -Weekend, Andrew Haigh (2011) -L'inconnu du lac, Alain Guiraudie (2013) -Velvet Goldmine, Todd Haynes (1998) And Supernova, from Harry MacQueen (2020), also really touched me deeply.

S

Pride (2014) and Hedwig and the angry inch (2001) should be there too. So difficult!!

Actually, I don't even need your email address, do I? There's no reason to be so wildly protective of the list of episodes, it's not like it's vital top secret info or something. So look, if you tell me you'd like me to, I'll copy paste the links to all the episodes in order in the comments here. Also, if you want it as a physical copy, there's a DVD box set on Amazon.co.uk, though it doesn't seem to be on Amazon.com. I'm putting in a link to the .co.uk one in case you're interested: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Buccaneers-Complete-DVD-Robert-Shaw/dp/B001KY5ZPU/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3Q8DNRLOUZQVN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.cTLmJ6hhm2GStYnsM0Ln_7pRku1lUKjIvmAQkWrzD4wjcG8jfpg_s-fDa__z3kAnCMOGWWMFmY1rxuaxPP7AWqk67ATtfkoKD-NL1sIqzpeQnl6lnzeJ_H_fKZ6aUrYQqrYPNjf2wx7TS8dxHzveRDPDAcGxRLBDXXrbcTNGfO9543Ii32EPlkSkWGfEbl4fFQ7pGS-K8WPLLu01uqXpNR3Kw2BQo8HAq20t92InODE.BIw13W95I9l2WNV9ogFzQ6pJdALizZ4XmvhHvSYiWqQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=The+buccaneers&qid=1709129162&sprefix=the+buccaneers%2Caps%2C200&sr=8-1 Wow, that was quite a link; I have no idea why Amazon feels the need to have such long links! I will therefore just quickly mention that both The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (also Cole and Weinstein projects) are both available on Amazon.com as full box sets, but I will not link you to them. Sir Lancelot is quite interesting, they don't give him a long-term male love interest but they may be implying he's gay? He's the one hero of a 50s action show I've come across who never once kisses a girl on the mouth - he comes close a couple of times, but he always comes up with some reason not to go through with it. Also, in the episode Double Identity (interesting name, btw), a guy shows up who, based on how they interact, I think may be an ex or current love interest of Lancelot's. There's some other stuff as well, but I don't want to go on too long!

Aaah thank you so much!!!! I really appreciate the link and the boost, and if there's anything I can do for you in return I'd be delighted to. You mentioned having trouble finding episodes of The Buccaneers; I've already uploaded all the episodes onto Internet Archive, I'll only be linking them one by one as I do each blog post, but you could probably find them by searching the Archive for "Buccaneers 50s TV show" or something similar. Or I could email you a list of the links for all the episodes in order if you felt comfortable giving me your email address - I would entirely understand if you didn't, though, not giving out your email to wildly enthusiastic fans is probably one of the things you learn about on the first day of the Handling Parasocial Relationships class!

My top three queer films are, 1. Shortbus- saw this in Kalamazoo, of all places, when it 1st came out. Subsequently bought it on DVD & have signatures from Jay Brannan, PJ Deboy, Paul Dawson, & Bitch. I absolutely love this movie, even if it’s a bit problematic. 2. Were the World Mine. Visually stunning, superb acting, lovely ending. 3. Some Like It Hot. Simply the best ending line of any movie, “Well, nobody’s perfect!” ❤️

T
Ten Thousand Worlds · February 28, 2024

My Top Three Queer Films: “Cassandro” (2023), US, directed by Roger Ross Williams “Cachorro” / “Bear Cub” (2004), Spain, directed by Miguel Albaladejo “But I'm a Cheerleader” (1999), US, directed by Jamie Babbit My Honorable Mention: “Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios” / “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (1988), Spain, directed by Pedro Almodóvar. This movie doesn’t have a single Queer character, but it’s soooo Gay.

S
Samuel Pérez · February 28, 2024

I also love Cachorro

T
Thomas Pileggi · February 28, 2024

Were the World Mine is also wonderful and is based on the short film Fairies.

D
David Kirk · February 28, 2024

Pride Carol A Taste of Honey Murray Melvin who passed away last year played Geoffrey in A taste of Honey for which he won Best Actor at Cannes. It a very early sympathetic explicitly gay charecter who ends up in a kind of found family with the main charecter Jo. To modern eyes his charecter is a bit sad and it’s a shame he was not given an on screen love interest. But still he elevates the role and his scenes with Rita Tushingham really sing.

D
David Kirk · February 28, 2024

And special shout out to Victim. British film and TV of the early 60s I think did played a major role in bringing about the change in the law by changing attitudes. Victim especially.

T
Thomas Pileggi · February 28, 2024

Thanks for the shout out, Matt. I used to collect gay themed DVDs back then. I am happy you know and like my recommendations. Those 3 are definitely my top, but I have a few other recomendations. You've already mentioned Trick and Big Eden, but I have some foreign films that are really pretty good. Ma Vie en Rose is heart wrenching. David and I are very close friends with the lead actress' mom. Porquoi Pas Mois is a really fun movie. And the Japanese anime series Gravitation is matter of factly gay. And speaking of Japan, the Netfix series Midnight Diner and Midnight Diner:Tokyo Stories are gorgeous and lgbt inclusive. We've watched both series 4 times already. Anyway, We both love your videos and look forward to each one.

My top 3 in random order: Carol, Desert Hearts, Torch Song Trilogy. Coincidentally, I looked up this quote from Ann Bancroft yesterday (she plays Arnold's mother), as she replies to a tearful Arnold: "Arnold : Ma... I miss him. Ma : Give yourself time, Arnold. It gets better... But, Arnold, it never goes away. You can work longer hours, adopt a son, fight with me, whatever... it'll still be there. But that's all right, it becomes a part of you, like learning to wear a ring or a pair of eyeglasses. You get used to it. And that's good. It's good, because it makes sure you don't forget. You don't want to forget him, do you?". Priscilla, Queen of the desert is another favorite, but I wanted to mention Desert Hearts, so I cheat a little.

Honorable Mention to Spielberg's "The Color Purple" because while dismissing Shug's actual identity in the book, still was ambitious enough to show at least some type of love between Shug and Celie who is one of the most famous literary couples in all fiction (well they are also in other novels of Walker's for one to know how important this relationship was).
