December recommendations! Silent films, Clark Gable, Snow White drag, and a Bette Davis sitcom
Hello there!
Time once again for the monthly feedback video! This is a video series that is free to everyone on Patreon, and that started as a way for me to respond to questions ... and has now sort of morphed into Patrons trading their recommendations for great stuff to watch.
So! If you like the kind of stuff that I make, here's more media recommended by folks like you, which you may also enjoy. Thanks to everyone who sent me recommendations, and please keep them coming!
Here's the things I talk about this month, and places to find them online:
Alice Guy Blanche documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zli0mysaUeU
Clark Gable inventing Bugs Bunny: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyWMOt11ceU
Snow White drag from Kentucky Moonshine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPAscmZB5sU
QUITE a lot of feminine chemistry in Tipping the Velvet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN8Ff7cmCGg
Hans Conried and his fancy fellows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmKCwwsa0w4
The bonkers Bette Davis sitcom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7J2I9LxSF0
Thanks again for all the suggestions and please keep sending them along!

My memory of Hans Conried is as Snidely Whiplash in the Dudley Do-Right cartoons, and the host of Fractured Flickers.
Ooops! I meant male impersonators, not female impersonators. But while I'm here anyway, I did have an idea for an ending for the Recommendation vids: they've turned into this thing which is all about us going and finding things to bring back to you, right? So why not use that classic "Fly my pretties! Fly!" clip from the Wizard of Oz? I mean, that does kind of make you the Wicked Witch, but you did do that one video about how queer people tend to identify with the villain! And hey, I'd be happy to be a flying monkey.
Yay, made it into the Recommendations video this time! I know what you mean about Algie, but the thing is, she couldn't have written a gay man at that time without having at least a slight cloak of "well, obviously he needs to be straightened out" to hide what she was really doing. Also, if you look closely, at the moment when Jim breaks the door down, Algie widens his eyes and throws his hands up beside his head in what looks a bit like a classic "sissy" gesture; which does seem to leave open the possibility that he hasn't actually changed significantly, just learned how to code-switch better than before. He also clutches at Jim's arm when Jim first starts slinging bullets around, which is just a nice little moment between them. Also, if you're interested in the classic female impersonators, may I recommend Vesta Tilley? Her most famous song was Burlington Bertie, which was actually originated by Ella Shields; here's a very bad film of Shields singing it, I can't find actual footage of Vesta Tilley performing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN1JxKPYrJY
I don't have Twitch, but if you're watching "The Lion in Winter", I may have to acquire it. That movie, along with "Long Day's Journey into Night", is one I can't turn off if I happen to come across it on television. Both are unstoppable.
Mary Wickes and Bette Davis also appear together in 'Now Voyager'!
“Dora, I suspect you’re a treasure.”
