Bonus video! The queer careers of the actors in Disney's Mary Poppins
Hello there!
I've got a real whale of a bonus video for you this week. In my research into the movie Victim, I noticed that a lot of the queer roads kept leading back to -- for some reason -- Disney's Mary Poppins. A lot of the women in this film have astonishingly adventurous lives, from the people they married to the roles they played outside of the Disney universe.
For example: Did you know Katie Nanna was also the Bride of Frankenstein? That Hermione Baddeley (who played Ellen the maid) had her acting career resuscitated at a gay party thrown by a homosexual named "Bunny"? And that Glynis Johns (Mrs. Banks) had an ex-husband who mayyyyyybe had an affair with one of the other women in the Mary Poppins cast? And that's only the BEGINNING. (To say nothing of the time Julie Andrews made out with Carol Burnett in an elevator.)
Also! As you might've seen, there's some new stuff coming your way!

This is a month late so I imagine no one is going to see it but I'm going to say it anyway (I'm sorry this video came out the week of the World Figure Skating Championships, all I did that week was watch figure skating). Anyway, I find it very funny that both Glynis Johns and Angela Lansbury's first husbands were gay.
I bet they had a LOT to talk about
My favorite Glynis Johns film is also one of my favorite films: The Court Jester. Queer connection? She spends much of the film in drag, and her co-star is Danny Kaye, who was bi. But just watch it because it's very funny! Get it? Got it! Good!
Julie!! Always Julie! Lol
I saw Chris Colfer’s ‘Rose’s Turn’ is trending again too. He’s had some good ones!
Hatpins! I was in middle school in the late 70s and there was a boy who liked to corner me and punch me.. HARD. My mother called the school and they just brushed it off as he liked me and I should be happy. The bruises on my arms said otherwise. So Mother dug into her jewelry box and found a hatpin for me. I wore it in my sleeve. It took 2 stabs and the boy never spoke or even looked at me again.
For anyone interested in watching other films staring Glynis Johns, I'd highly recommend checking out the film "Miranda" where Johns plays the title role. It's a fascinating picture, considering that it's a sex comedy from Britain made in 1948, where the character of Miranda enchants every man she meets and has many off screen implied sexual encounters. The only reason I assume that such shocking content could get past the censors of the time is that Glynis's character is in fact a mermaid! Needless to say it's a wild picture. Plus it also stars David Tomlinson, her future on screen husband in Mary Poppins!
RE Elsa Lanchester: One of my favorite roles of hers is Jessica Marbles, a send-up of Miss Marple, in “Murder By Death.” She also had what I consider an obscure guest appearance on “I Love Lucy” as Ms. Grundy, who agrees to drive Lucy and Ethel to Miami, but abandons them before reaching Florida. RE Le Jazz Hot: The original Julie Andrew’s version is better in my view, but the “Glee” version didn’t slouch at all. It’s one of the best numbers the series ever did in its run.
You mentioned that Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton considered a "thruple" with her song writer, but you didn't give more info about that person. Who were they, and what gender? Such a tease!
I'm a big fan of the Stephanie Miller Show. Her current producer is Carrie Hamilton, Carol Burnett's daughter, and it is always fun for her to refer to "Aunt Julie" who is, of course, Julie Andrews.
You’re very welcome! I’ll send it along as soon as it arrives.
I thought I knew my TV and movie trivia, but I’m always learning something new from your videos, Matt! Also, I think Glee had the better of the Le Jazz Hot numbers! Creative, production was on point - Chris Colfer (Kurt) in the split guises for the “duet” was genius and what a performance!! The Victor/Victoria original was certainly lovely (and it’s one of my favorite films!).
I guess being older, I’ve never seen an episode of My So Called Life, but am looking forward to your video. Regarding Elsa Lanchester, I remember her talking about her husband Laughton, on the Dick Cavett Show, and how he would have gentlemen guests arrive at their home at late hours of the evening. If I can find the clip, I’ll post it here.
Dick Cavett, by the way, was a cutie and once said that homosexuals found him irresistible!
Hi, Matt! Very entertaining video! My question refers back to the last one: Are you still seeking a copy of _Brief Encounters_? I found some on Abe Books (a great source for old, rare, and out-of-print books, in case you don’t know it), so I bought it. I’m happy to keep it for myself, if you don’t still want it, but if you do, is there a way to send it to you? I think it’s supposed to arrive in a couple of weeks.
Oh wow yes, that's very generous of you -- I'd love that!!! I've got a PO box where folks can send me stuff, it's PO Box 22951, Seattle WA 98102 Thank you so much!!!
I've been clicking the YouTube link to watch your videos and post there in addition to here, to be sure YouTube sees your views.
Oh thank you, I appreciate that!
