Community Brainstorm: More Lethal Types?
Helloooo, hello!
We're back with another community question: how can we kill Stuffy in new ways?
No, we don't have it out for them... Fine, maybe a little bit. Maybe we do enjoy tossing them to their demise, but that's our business... okay?
We currently have a few ideas planned, with some being placeholders (more or less) and others being feature-complete. Here are a few lethal types we're already dealing with:
Electricity
Fire
Frost
Acid / Toxicity
Honey
Quicksand
Plasma
Our goal is to cover the essentials, first giving players enough lethal expression. However, many lethal types are functionally the same but visually different.
Now, there are also lethal types that have special properties, like fire (bounce off on first hit) and quicksand or frost (stay in contact long enough to die).
We're already considered other types including gas/poison and tar. Functionally these will be the same as existing lethals, but visually they will differ. For example, gas would force the material underneath to be invisible and non-colliding. When inside, you'd take damage until death after some seconds. For tar, you'd sink like quicksand, honey, etc.
While we've considered the idea of making water a lethal type, we also don't want this to be a decision we later regret should Stuffy learn to swim someday. So you'll need to creatively assemble that one on your own!
All things considered, what sort of lethal would you absolutely want to have?
What do you think might be missing? ...or do you think we've covered the basics already?

I'm hoping we get some kind of water material or hazard to be able to make levels you can swim. 🌊
Ok Trixel creative what are your thoughts on creating enemie "Monster Brain" or a monster ai (Ground, Air, or Water ai. That could simmilar to Little big planet creates many cool new ideas of level design
Radiation maybe, like you get slower and glow as you get closer and then pop of you get too close ?
a magic hazard that turns stuffy into something else?
I've already seen some people floating around the idea of a hazard that hinders stuffys movement by making them slower and stopping them from jumping Anyway I think Mud could be a goof fit visually for that type of hazard
This might seem like a bizarre choice, but what about a foliage-based lethal type where if Stuffy stays on it for too long, they slowly get replaced by vines and flowers from the inside out, until they eventually become a topiary?
Okay so, the game wouldn't hit the right spot without explosives, let's be real. But beyond that... what if you could apply the different lethal types to said explosives? Honey bombs to leave sticky blobs everywhere, plasma bombs for a short lived, but wide effect, frost bombs don't kill but freeze in place temporarily, etc.
can you in any way make a... (My suggestion is not lethal but when you add spikes or other things.) A monster micro chip where we can make free blocks and stuff into enemies we have to smoke with our needle.
I tried to come up with something that (1) hasn't been suggested already, (2) has a unique quality to it, and (3) isn't that hard to implement. Presenting... Radioactive goo! This is a unique hazard type because it can harm stuffy just by being in its vicinity. Basically, when you get close to the material, a shadowy vignette fades in on the corners of the screen, signalling danger. You could even play some radiation ticking sounds for effect. The idea is that this hazard kills stuffy when he's too close to the radiaoactive goo for too long. It would be up to the developers, but maybe something around 15 seconds is appropriate. This could have applications in time-sensitive obstacles or challenges.
Maybe something like magma that only kills stuffy after you've touched it for too long? I think that could be pretty cool!
Okay hear me out I have a few ideas first, The banana peel the banana peel would be great with other things like enemies because the banana peel makes stuffy fall over and when they get back up they are slowed for a few seconds. this also fits the theme of the game well since it's kind of "cartoonish" in a way. So while we have something that will slow stuffy down why not have something to speed them up like a slippery surface that would make the player lose control of stuffy.
a very generic lethal would be nice! it’s not extravagant, but being able to easily replicate and pretend that stuffy died from falling, being crushed, or some custom concept with a simple death animation would help open a lot of creative opportunities outside of “You Burned to Death” i feel!
A lethal type could be yarn with knitting needles, scissors and other sharp objects only as a texture that has a 3d effect that would kill stuffy immediately if touched to keep it simple or you could make the yarn non colliding and when stuffy passes through the yarn it hinders his movement while simultaneously tearing him apart killing him if he moves around in there for too long. Also I 100% think water's lethality should be a world property and should probably work just like Crystalline Furret said.
As well as fire, perhaps a lava version, unlike fire you wouldn't jump up on the hit and instead sink in to it, making it a more deadly version.
Water's lethality could be a world property, disabled by default. When enabled, you'll need to have scuba gear equipped to breathe underwater, otherwise suffocate after a pre-determined (adjustable) amount of time, or be near an air bubble emitting material to reset it?
But would that confuse players if it's different between levels?
If you add water, drowning could be another way stuffy would die or maybe a lethal type with shark/piranha infested water
How about an option or trigger point area to enable death from falling from a great height or slamming into walls at high speeds he could just flop like a ragdoll and explode into fluff 😅
If by any chance the object itself becomes pass through, then I'd pitch a "Zero gravity zone." Could have a very short time to live. Almost a placeholder for water. If added, maybe the function to add a space helmet accessory of some sort? Assuming you'll make unique areas in a level.
shred stuffy like a document
oh my
• Sawblades: Shred stuffy to pieces and fling their stuffing everywhere. • Petrification: Stuffy gets turned to stone and can't move - if enough force gets applied to petrified Stuffy, they shatter. Otherwise you get freed after a small amount of time automatically. • Infestation: Stuffy gets covered in ants or some other swarm of small critters trying to eat them alive. If you shake the ants off in time, you live. • Asphyxiation: Have like an invisible area or fog that makes you slowly run out of oxygen. If you add swimming, would be cool to have this underwater too. If it's possible, I think it'd be awesome to have a "custom" lethal type where you choose a stamp to act as a particle effect for the material and then another stamp to act as whatever Stuffy turns into. Like if I wanted to make a digitize lethal effect, I pick the custom one, then choose stamps that look computery.
sawblades are good, combine it with the wall jumping and people can make super meat stuffy.
It could be fun for the bounce off fire to be somewhat high so it could potentially be used for gameplay. I think you’ve covered a lot of bases. Could be fun for a Sharp spike effect, like a semi metallic overlay with a glisten across the material? I guess in a similar style to gas but a Mould effect could look cool on materials. Basically a physical surface that you take damage on with prolonged contact. A Velcro danger could also be interesting? Although maybe it’d be similar to Honey? (Not sure what that does) like a surface that you stick to and you need to tap jump multiple times to get free.
The idea of mold could be very interesting! It would play well with the overlay and particle system we've set up for lethals, so emitting mold spores would be easy. Velcro is currently occupied by our wall jump overlay setting!
Spikes could be a lethal type, for very sharp terrain or objects
Interesting, interesting... It would be a bit tricky to add something like thorns or spikes around a material, as our system is only based on having a material shader and particles at the moment. But definitely a good idea!
Well how about adding worm whole
I love the idea of acid. Lethal type its orginal.
