Brainstorm: Gameplay Enhancers
Help us create fun new objects that enrich the player's platforming experience!
You may be familiar with our Blink Bubble teleporters, Trampolines, Fans, Proximity Mines, etc... These are all 'Gameplay Enhancer' objects that bring a new level of fun and traversal to platforming.
We're constantly thinking of new ideas, but we need your help now!
Let us know what fun traversal objects or deadly obstacles you can think of!
These should ideally be modular enough to stand on their own, and not rely on other existing systems too much. Because this is a 2.5D level editing game, we can only slot objects into preset layers of depth and they must contain their own triggers and scripts. This means they can't be too extravagant, and it should be easy for anyone to place them down and have them work instantly!

attract-o-gel!
Conveyor belts? They could use a node-based system, if a loop is created there's just one side with the belt, but if it's a one-way line the belt loops around on the other side of the rotating cylinders (upside down). Speed and width can be set, and they can go horizontally, diagonally, the depth axis, vertically, etc.
Velcro maybe? You attach it to the edge of an object and it will get stuck to other velcro objects or Stuffies. Can be pulled apart with enough force.
Oooh very creative!
Rail grinding is always fun. Also rails to tether to and zip line from, like Bioshock Infinite.
Might be a big ask but a pump that fills areas with fluid or small round shapes
Maybe something like the controllinator from lbp2, that can turn any prop or block of material into a vehicle?
That would be logic instead of a gameplay object, but thanks for the suggestion!
I would really like to see a few things: - Fans that create a draft, causing stuffy to be pushed with it. Maybe the strength of the fan could be modular. - Stun bombs. (Hazard that stops stuffy - and other creatures if they are a thing too.) - Sticky materials; This makes stuffy move slower, but could also double as a wall-slide mechanic for creators and levels to include.
We have 2 of those already! Thanks for the suggestions :)
I feel like emitters were the bread and butter for most things dangerous in LBP, so something like that would go a long way, even if there are technical limitations that would hold it back in this game for something more self-contained, a flinging pad that would flip up a panel to horizontally launch things would be cool. could be toggled to only activate by player proximity or to activate on anything based on a weight threshold.
I’m not really sure what so say, so here’s some random things - Robo-Bear ( It’s a windup toy robot version of Stuffy that can be programmed to follow the player or copy the player. Basically a Sackbot. ) - Paint-ball gun - An optional setting that locks you on a layer instead of going between them - Record microchip ( Record moving objects ) - Water ( Basically the water system from LBP )
Thanks for the suggestions, Travis! These are great ideas, though they're all either logic or powerups. We're currently brainstorming self-contained gameplay objects instead. <3
Maybe there can be like Vector Pads/Zones where you get launched in the direction the Vector is pointing (Omnidirectionally X,Y) at a speed that can be customized by the level designer per vector. This could be used to get a player from one section of the map to another very quickly, or as an obstacle that could launch them away from their objective if not carefully navigating. It would probably work best as a 2D Background model rather than an object placed onto surfaces.
Rocket Thrusters! being able to make stupidly fast vehicles by covering it in thrusters was my favorite thing to mess around with.
What about like a "hook" that, when threaded by your Needle & Thread, quickly zips Stuffy towards it like a hookshot? I'm imagining it being something like a homing attack from Sonic except your momentum is preserved when you reach the target. Could make for some neat fast-paced level gimmicks! For another idea, this one might be a bit more impactful on Stuffy's moveset and harder to implement but what about grind rails? Stuffy could ride on them to move quickly through layers, having to manipulate momentum to maintain speed. I think with Restitched's kinda unique take on 2.5d movement, more gameplay elements should take advantage of that this way. For a unique hazard, maybe a saw blade that can cut your N&T, cancelling your threaded connection? So for example, say you have threaded something above you and the sawblade comes into contact with the thread, it would automatically disconnect the needle and Stuffy would fall and not be able to use their N&T again till after they've landed on the ground. This being said, I'm not sure how the N&T works exactly right now so maybe it already disconnects you if an object is in the way, making this kinda useless. But if not, think it could make for a cool obstacle!
The Needle 'n Thread is indeed broken when it's obstructed by something. Thanks for the suggestions! :)
gravity inversion
Gravity play does sound quite fun, doesn't it? :)
I think bear traps would be really cool since stuffy is a bear, maybe there could be a mechanic where you don’t instantly die but instead have a chance to break out if you span click a button?
Bear traps sound very in flavor! (moreso than mines personally)
1. Not sure what form they'd take, but how about an object that when you touch it in the air, allows you to double-jump/jump in the air again? Could lead to some cool parkour levels combined with Blink Bubbles ^^ 2. Magnetic fields i.e. objects that push or pull stuffy 3. Platforms that break after a couple seconds when you stand on them
I think the third suggestion could be done with the future logic system, but the others sound very fun and have been considered! :)
Whats about 0 friction surfaces where the player glides across (on ice or jam for example)
Friction is currently a planned setting for all objects/materials, so you might be able to make this manually! :)
Jetpack!
We're not planning to implement powerups at this time, but thank you for the suggestion!
So like the grabinator from lbp2 how about a vacuum tool, you can pull objects and release them with a gust of air, even hold one object of reasonable size for later and if the object is too heavy, you can still push or pull them but can’t hold them. Like a Vac N’ Go or a Va(queue)m.
That does sound very cool, though we're unfortunately not planning to implement powerups at this time. :(
What about lasers? Moving and or static.
Interesting idea! How would you expect this to work as a gameplay object? :)
Tesla coil (fires electrical bolt or makes object electrical) Freezer (makes surface slippy for certain amount of time) Grav-o-matic (can disable/alter Gravity in the level or certain area) Speed zone (can alter Speed globally or locally) Light zone (can alter lighting or levels of light globally or locally)
Very neat ideas, though they aren't quite gameplay objects themselves. We're seeing a few gravity suggestions, so this could be fun to look into!
Why don't you make tubes that works like the ones in Super Mario Maker 2 that when you enter inside you travel through them? Other idea would be to add something that can change the gravity of the character like for example you're running to a platform and after turning on something with a button or something it make the character have inverted gravity. Third idea, a material that when on it you slide on it just like Mario Wonder and when you jump you land on the one above or below you What do you think about these ideas?
actually love the idea of clear pipes in Restitched, there's a lot of potential there i think
