Konami's Kicker Schematics Restored

Using first-hand sources for information is vital for our preservation and reproduction purposes. Arcade schematics contain all the connectivity information of the devices on the PCB. For some games, that's all you need to know. But this information is not available for most games. And even when we have them, schematics do not often represent the final manufactured version of the game.

As I work from home and cannot offer a brilliant career path to someone with a tech grade, my attempts to hire new grads from college or trade school have been a complete disaster and have cost quite a lot of money and time. Still, we need faithful schematics. So for Exed Exes I worked them out myself. I got all the information I needed, but the process was extremely time-consuming.

I started getting help at home from an immigrant from Colombia named Esperanza about the same time. She showed good mechanical skills and initiative by fixing small things I hadn't even asked her to do. But, Esperanza needed a legal contract to stay in the country, so she was looking for a better opportunity. So, I offered to train her to help with the PCB work. She had no experience whatsoever in electronics, but she seemed smart and hard working. 

Two and a half months later, she's legally employed and has completed the extraction of Konami's Kicker schematics. These schematics were available in an utterly unreadable PDF (see here). We had a PCB that was donated by yeahbuddy a while ago. So working with the PCB and the original PDF, we have produced clean and correct schematics for this game. Find them attached to this post.

We are very proud of this work and have already started on the next game: Kyukyoku Tiger (aka Twin Cobra). Thank you very much for supporting our work.

El uso de fuentes de información de primera mano es vital para nuestros propósitos de preservación y reproducción. Los esquemas de máquinas arcade contienen toda la información de conectividad de los dispositivos en la PCB. Para algunos juegos, eso es todo lo que necesitas saber. Pero esta información no está disponible para la mayoría de los juegos. E incluso cuando los tenemos, los esquemas no suelen representar la versión final fabricada del juego.

Como trabajo desde casa y no puedo ofrecer una carrera brillante a alguien con un grado de tecnología, mis intentos de contratar nuevos graduados de la universidad o de formación profesional han sido un completo desastre y han costado bastante dinero y tiempo. Aún así, necesitamos esquemas eléctricos fieles. Así que para Exed Exes los resolví yo mismo. Obtuve toda la información que necesitaba, pero el proceso fue extremadamente lento.

Comencé a tener ayuda en casa de una inmigrante de Colombia llamada Esperanza casi al mismo tiempo. Mostraba buenas habilidades mecánicas e iniciativa arreglando pequeñas cosas que ni siquiera le había pedido que hiciera. Pero Esperanza necesitaba un contrato legal para quedarse en el país, por lo que estaba buscando una oportunidad mejor. Entonces, me ofrecí a enseñarle para que ayudara con el trabajo con las placas. No tenía experiencia alguna en electrónica, pero parecía inteligente y trabajadora.

Dos meses y medio después, está legalmente empleada y ha completado la extracción de los esquemas de Kicker de Konami. Estos esquemas estaban disponibles en un PDF completamente ilegible (ver aquí). Teníamos una placa que donada por yeahbuddy hace un tiempo. Así que, trabajando con la placa y el PDF original, hemos dibujado unos esquemas limpios y correctos para este juego. Estan adjuntos a esta publicación.
