Tortle Wizard - Late WIP

Hey folks! Here's the last WIP for this model ^^ I'm making modular elements (two heads, three right hands) so it takes more time, but I'm almost there now ;)
Hopefully I can get started on the pirate captain very soon :)

Is that a 25mm base that it's on? I hope so!

I put bases on my models for 3D previz purposes, only. My models always come without bases, but I always make sure they can fit on standard bases. Overhang is to be expected, but they'll fit ;)

I am so excited for this mini I actually made a Tortle wizard in a new campaign! Sadly someone picked wizard already and I wasn’t able to play him 😭 This sculpt is amazing, incredibly dynamic which I think is the signature of your style, and I can’t wait to get a supported version and print one for myself!

Rah, geez, bummer! ;) I'd love for one of my sculpts to be your player character :D That sculpt was pretty weird to make, actually ^^' Never did anything like this before so there was a lot of trial and error. All Tortles spellcasters I came across were a bit too static for me so I really went overboard with the composition, and it backfired here and there XD First time I had a go at a typically GWesque spell effect, too. I'm pretty happy with it :) I finished exporting and fixing all of its six stls earlier today (body, two heads, three right hands) so I'm sending it to Stephen Farrell soon for presupports. Anyway, thanks for the praise, man! I appreciate it a lot :) Getting started on the pirate very soon :P

Thanks I'll check that ❤️

Well nothing to add to this Amazing tortles you'll give us in September 😍 the Gnolls was indeed my favorite minis so far but I'm still afraid to try and print them on my FDM 🙊 Keep de good work I really like your style and the fact that you listen to your patreon suggest/request. I'm really glad to follow your work and contribute!

Thanks Julie :D! Maybe you've already seen this but just in case ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDW7g3JOqLA (quality fdm miniatures printing ;) ) Super happy to have you on board as well :D I'm super grateful to have so many great supporters, here :) It's only normal I listen to your suggestions and request whenever possible ^^

This is SOOOO good!

Thank you so much, man :D At first, I was a bit afraid people wouldn't like him. I mean, tortle wizard with Ki blast pose and dynamic drapery..??! Sounds like quite the recipe for disaster XD! But yeah, I think in the end it worked out fine ^^

Great work, and perfect amount of modularity IMHO. Head option, and weapon option (and weaponless too). spot on! and should you decide to come back and make different heads for whatever reason (diff turtle/tortoise breeds etc), be nice and simple :D

M
Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

Thanks Joey :D! The head option is really because several people specifically asked for it. I think the hoodless version is just as good :) The cutting and keying of the heads was/is quite the head scratcher, though ^^' Gotta make a whole bunch of boolean operations and figure out the right angle of incidence of the separate piece to make sure you can actually plug the thing in. My first attempt was a failure XD The top front part of the chest blocked the head, hence the diagonal keying, as you can see ;) Weaponless versions isn't too much work and leaves cool options for people who do digital kitbashing, so it might just become something redundant in my work, though ;)

Normally not a huge fan of tortles but this guy looks awesome! Most sculpts of tortles look stiff and boring but this one is wonderfully dynamic . I'm excited to get this one! Excellent work!

M
Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

Thank you so much, Eric :D That's exactly what I thought when I started researching Tortle spellcasters (artworks and minis)! I was like "well.. that's all pretty stiff and boring" and I really wanted to try and spice things up a bit ^^ In my mind, the druid will have tons more details and will be more stiff, but if done well, it can look great. My Gnoll deathpledge (mask and collar of severed human heads) is one of my favourite works, and it's the most static model I've done.

Yes! Really cool! Plz, don't add more modular parts after staff !! :P

M
Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

Thanks :D You're right, ahah XD See, just like we discussed. Heads, hands, and that's it :D ^^

Looking good! I guess I'll use the unhooded variant for one reason: it seems that over his hunched pose the face will be totally covered from above and most sides. Is that correct?

M
Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

Yeah, probably, ahah XD Luckily, the unhooded version works pretty well visually, too :)

Beautiful!

Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

Thanks, man, I appreciate it :D

M
Michael Pescuma · August 22, 2020

That's amazing...and thanks for adding the unhooded head :) Your models are seriously amazing.

M
Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

Thanks Michael :D Hopefully there should be enough modularity on this guy :) One regular staff, one flame staff, and a bare hand for people who want to kitbash another weapon on it before printing ^^

J
Jason · August 22, 2020

Thank you for including un-flamed staff for FDM!

M
Manuel Boria · August 22, 2020

No problem ;) I figured it wouldn't be too much work and people would like that option ^^
