Tortle wizard - WIP
Hey folks! Here's the progress on the Tortle wizard. Not quite done yet, maybe another day or two to call it finished, but it gives a pretty good idea :)
Went through several iterations for the cape. I ended up making it into two capes on top of each other so the drapery work makes sense and the composition is more balanced.
I added a bunch of details (straps, buckle, pouches, collar, book, scroll, etc.) and kept polishing and detailing the organic parts, mostly anatomy and flame effect on the staff.
Let me know what you guys think ;)

It's sooo true! And when i see that: https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99120216009_BoCBrayherdGors01.jpg I think your model are better ^^ Obviously, GW have really cool models. ^^
Yeah, well, those are very modular models, is all ;) That's the main reason I stand my ground on most modularity requests. The more modular you go, the more generic and stiffer your models get. There's almost no way around that. For instance, some have been asking swappable arms/hands to be able to turn some of my archers into rogues with two daggers. It may work to some degree but still, hell no. An archer has an archer pose/body language, archer equipment, etc. The bow matters a lot in the silhouette/composition, etc. The entire thing was designed around the archer idea. If I make a rogue, everything has to be designed around this idea, as well.
I love it... And it's so hard to wait!!! Honesty, I always print for my wargame (Malifaux) and your sculpt don't match with it... But it's so amazing... I can't resist!
I am very flattered, Greg, thank you so much :D True, Malifaux's models are way more realistic in terms of proportions (I always try to match GW's scale ^^') and the setting is more modern. Feels bad, man XD Don't hesitate to make suggestions for future releases ;)
The doubles up cape makes much more sense ! My only piece of feedback was going to be that his shell looks incredible and that it was a little lost or not reflected by the cape :) But if he’s doubled up on capes maybe he comes from somewhere cold and that makes much more sense that you can’t see the shell texture 😊 I love him!
Thanks ^^ I definitely wanted the capes to feel quite thick. I'm trying to keep the details on lower half of the model so it feels more balanced, so the fewer details on the capes, the better ;)
I don’t want to post how amazing your work is every time you post, but you force my hand! I cannot wait to make some smooth transitions on that cape and some osl!!
Thanks buddy :D Gotta show us your paintjobs ;)!
As an FDM user I'm a bit worried about printing the flames. An option without flames would be nice.
If you really have trouble printing this version, I'll make one without flames ;)
That is looking so cool! Will the tortle models ultimately be baseless like the gnolls? Or will there be the option to print them w/o bases?
Thanks ^^ I always release my models baseless, perfectly flat under the feet so they can be glued on separate bases. People use all kinds of bases. Square, round, hexagonal, bigger, smaller, detailed, flat, etc. There are a ton of files like those already available online for free. I'd much rather have one single baseless version and let people choose their own bases ;)
Definitely the most dynamic tortle sculpt I've seen. Can't wait.
Thanks :D I'll start releasing my Tortle models at the beginning of September. I think you can expect three of them at first, and the remaining two over the subsequent weeks ^^
Looking amazing! I really like how the hood doesn't cover his face too much Flame and scrolls are really good too! I also like the component couch and small vial
Thanks Jason :D I think I got enough of those details laid out now ^^ Just need to polish everything ;)
The book and scroll are great! I like that you are building characters which can tell a part of their own story. The Knolls each have details which tell what they are carrying and a bit about who they are, without a Perception check! Great work. One suggestion, how about some Tortle wizard symbology on the cloak, one big jawn or a strip of magical merit-badges?
Thanks man :D Good suggestion! I'll need to find a way to make it subtle enough, though ;) I'm trying to keep most of the details on the lower part of the model to maintain a good visual balance.
