Patreon Update Video - March 2024
It’s tat time again.
I’ve assembled another Patreon exclusive video. Just a video this time as an audio version wouldn’t make much sense. I’m thinking specifically about an overlong behind the scenes section.
https://youtu.be/QU7YnNkuyDE
This one is on the longer side so you might prefer to skip any bits that overstay their welcome. For anyone unaware, the YouTube keyboard shortcuts for skipping forward or back a chapter are Ctrl+→ and ← on Windows, ⌥ opt+→ and ← on Mac.
This might end up being my only video this week, but we’ll see. Hopefully not.
I hope you’re doing well. Take care and have a good one.
UPDATE: The company behind the crap restoration show have content matched their inaccurate garbage nonsense in this video - so I’ve asked YouTube to snip it all out. It'll end up making even less sense than their over scripted, badly performed drivel - but that's the way things go.

I'm a bit late in getting round to watching this., but wanted to say I loved the behind the scenes stuff. I often find that the "making of" elements of a thing is more interesting than the thing itself.
Very late to the party, but seriously disappointed Mission Impossible is no longer well known. One of my favourite shows, so I love the references.
I thought the popularity of the movies might have helped a resurgence of the old TV show.
I liked the look into Mission Impossible tape machines (and also the Mindhunter ones) from an aesthetics perspective. I was watching the 1974 Gene Hackman film The Conversation the other day, another good film for analog recording fans.
Well, I thought the MI:3 segment was really good. I didn't notice any of the continuity issues at the time. Perhaps if you had worn a different jacket i might ... ! Anyway, really good and good fun.
Mat, I noticed that you have a fancy looking toaster there. I pull my hair out at trying to find one that actually can fit all the larger modern bread into it, is your Ninja sow Thing you would recommend? Love to see a review of it!
Perhaps I can show it in the next update. I do recommend it, with a couple of tiny reservations.
I just want to say that I really enjoy watching these Mat. So different from the “main channel” videos. It often feels a bit like us vs the world - all those idiots out there with their algorithm desperate to watch something with an odd face in the thumbnail and we patreons enjoy watching you ramble on about whatever.
Following on from your Cup Noodle videos, I bought some of the fancy ones you recommended from Japan at great expense, only to discover that they aggravated my IBS sadly! So my brother-in-law got a giant bag of them free. Its weird how some do and some don't affect me - UFOs don't so I guess I will stick with them as the occasional luxury
MI - the original series (or should that be MI-TOS??? - Is being repeated on the LEGEND channel (0041). I loved Barney and his great kit to achieve the impossible in the day. Love the Behind the Scene's footage and the editing. Sorry Mat, had to skip the Noodles but I might try the All Day Breakfast. Can't imaging chewing a slug though.... 🤮🤮 I wonder if your colour issue (the red face at the start) is down to your camera doing auto-white balance and being affected by the changing colour of the dummy head in the background. It seemed that the colour overall was changing just slightly throughout the video, noticeable on your shirt. If your editor has a colour correction section with a vectorscope, you might be able to see the changes. I well remember when I used to video weddings, I had to point my camera at a white sheet to set the colour balance before filming.
Yes the to-camera shots are always a 'crap shoot' sometimes the camera gets it bang on - more often than not it gets something wrong. In the video I'm working on at the moment I'm a couple of cm to the left of my usual seating position and that means the focus is hunting. Only spotted during editing. Fun times.
Just in case there is some kind of official poll, YES, we are still interested in the food videos! I don’t know if it’s the Oddcast Effect, but my noodle consumption is WAY up…
The behind the scenes of that mission impossible intro has made me actually wanna watch that video. Passed over it initially because I have no nostalgia for MI. I always enjoy these monthly patreon "things", keep up the good work you're one of the best video creators out there.
Agreed about Mat.
The drive-thru idea *would* fit with the original M:I show ... except ... in the late 1960s/early 1970s drive thrus were few and far between. Probably why they never used it ... at least I haven't seen it yet as I'm still working my way through the collection on Paramount+. I just scrubbed through the M:I Techmoan Eps 1 and 2 and don't see the 4-track or 8-track cartridge versions ... did you cover those and I scrubbed past it? There are a few, always with Mr Phelps getting into a car where the tape and photos are in the glove box. And I am really curious if the are Mad Man Muntz' 4-track or Bill Lear's 8-track. Gotta say, I preferred the seasons with Rollin "man of a million faces" Hand and cover girl Cinnamon Carter than the ones with definitely-not-Spock "Paris". At least Barney, Willy, and Jim are still there. So far (I'm at S4 Ep11) Right there with you on that restoration show. Yeesh.
There is a potential for a mop-up episode at some point covering the other devices they used once or twice - records etc... But given the dwindling (dwindled) interest in the subject it'd be a lot of work to put together for a very small audience.
Threads is one of those things I have vowed never to watch. Everyone I've spoken to who's seen it says it traumatised them for weeks. 😳
Another place to peruse for seating options: https://www.etsy.com/uk/market/drafting_stool
Those "Secret Restoration" clips are just painful to watch. They represent everything I loath about working in television production. Who needs authenticity, let's get our "expert" LA Thym here to explain how to get a nasty shock, while we "restore" a converted cabinet for the game it wasn't built for. Hope they don't plan to restore any microwaves or LA might not be long for this world...
So sad you conclude that the MI episodes is not that popular..I enjoyed them SOOO much. I could watch much more of these types. Is the real fall not a consequence of YouTube getting more and more channels that has the same topic as yours? Uh and those darn shorts steeling focus? Please never do those shorts!!
Shorts and I go together like oil and water. Once a month they turn up on my YT homepage and I immediately tap the ‘don’t show me shorts button’ and YT says ‘OK we’ll mute these for a month’…and on it goes.
About MQA: I did send a link to a technical video a while back that debunked it as snake oil ( https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=MQA+debunk ). Face it, we've seen lots of this come along over the years. Any format that claims to sound better than the source simply because it does some shift in format sampling rate or oversampling blah blah blah - is snake oil. I have a conflict of interest because I remaster audio using an AI hybrid process (called SpectreLayer). I will absolutely tell you that what I do sounds DIFFERENT than the source because the source if often DAMAGED and part of the analysis process I utilize involves reconstructing waveforms that are impaired by the original engineering. Add AI into the equation and Spectrelayer sounds spectacular in A/B comparisons. So, all the talk about sonic purity to the original is a load of rubbish because it assumes that the original sound engineers were able to mix/master to the optimum result from the QUINTILLIONS of permutations possible. So, NO - the "Muse-Gods" do not work in recording studios and mediocre masters abound! This is why MQA and everything like it is a load of bollucks. The claim of sounding more like the original than 44.1kHz, 16 bits - is arrogance beyond words. You might as well say: "Yes, the original is horribly clipped, but our process plays those clips back with amazing fidelity to the original clips."! What insane marketing is THAT!? It's MQA's marketing. Spectrelayer FIXES many of those problems & sounds BETTER than the source because it's REMASTERING with a tool set that is advanced & PROPRIETARY. Anyway - For anyone who wants to listen to the stuff my venture churns out, - over 100 DEMO's are on my semi-private YT at: https://www.youtube.com/@spectrelayer as well as several demos where the ORIGINAL and the SPECTRELAYER'D are switched back in forth several times during play to showcase the difference (note that the spectrum analysis videos have a PAL-friendly 50 Hz refresh rate - so you may need to force it if YT wants to throttle the image quality). And to really drive the point home, listen a bit with a set of good, low priced phones like the Panasonic HJE125 earbuds ($9)! Yeah...
This is why I took what I was saying completely away from MQA and talked about Matt’s Amazing Audio Format - the point was would it matter if MAAF was a lossy codec IF it was also the most amazing sounding audio format ever to have existed in the history of mankind. For the record again - I don’t give a stuff about MQA - I’m talking about Lossy vs Lossless.
Another fun video thanks Mat, does your little microwave container with the long handle have a maker's name? Can't seem to find them online. They're a great idea. Cheers, Phil. Edit: Found them after rewording my search.
Yes this is the one I use https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ANP09LM Some of the cheaper ones can crack after a while - but they all do the same job.
You hit on why I don’t watch “reality shows”. Like my mind across sandpaper they are. Love these variety show updates though! You got me eating cup noodles. Never thought that would happen
I used to like those shows when they focused on the techniques of the restoration, NOT the drama. Some history about the item? Great! How we sand blast it and get just the right shade of paint as a match? Wonderful! The argument you have with the other guy in the shop and obviously staged scenes about silly things? NOPE! I am anti-drama. So you might think I only watch ASMR videos, but not so. I want to hear relevant content well presented. An explanation of how a BGM places for 4 hours on one cart? Wonderful! How meals in a can from another country taste? Great! I learned something new. A video where have the words are "Um", "uh", "y'know" or a repeat of what they just said? I'll pass.
Hey Mat, just in case you're interested, IKEA are selling an adjustable stool called LIDKULLEN. I use it for playing guitar and it's extremely comfortable
Looks interesting - do you think it would hold up at maximum height with a fat bloke on it.
Hearing your potential idea for the fast food drive thru intro.. I think could have worked great. camera mounted in an over the shoulder view or passenger ceiling (so doesnt show the unwitting fast food worker’s face) but enough to see you drive up, order, and are handed a bag.. In reality you ordered something normal but since we can’t see your turned face to see what your lips actually said gives the opportunity to overdub the audio to make it like you ordered or asked a very peculiar question to the person to kick off the exchange.. something that a fast food place obviously wouldn’t have. Also a mobile app order so that way it just shows the worker hand you a bag without you paying them cash or handing over a card before hand, so adds to the illusion it’s not an ordinary transaction: as you drive up, ask your peculiar question, drive to the window, are immediately handed a bag, and drive off
The other issue in my head was finding a bench somewhere to film all the playback section - and any that I could think of around here had a lot of passing traffic (people and cars). If I ever need to return to the idea it’s still a possibility.
Being an old Sheffield Ex-pat, I can remember all of those shops in Threads so well. I bought my first ever album from that Woolworths. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, on pre-hipster vinyl. The record is still around, the Woolworths, not so much! Though it was bankruptcy that took it out, not a nuclear explosion!
Glad you finally found a cup noodle you like.
• Heavily edited, overly dramatic, and ill-contrived television is why I watch a lot of YouTube these days. • I have to admit, I wondered if someone else visited the storage facility while you were trying to film it - quite frustrating. • 'Drive Thrus' are for people who need food to eat at home after work because they're a horrible cook living in a one-person household; and they are isolationists who don't want to eat alone in restaurant. That's me. I am also the sad person you saw eating in a parked car. EDIT: I now see you meant picking up the food within the lobby - we must have different food prep speeds or priorities in U.S. restaurants. Picking up inside and Drive Thru is just about the same time in my experiences, even when I pre-order take-out. • Messy kitchens and cat hair matter very little to me - although when you were stirring the noodles it resembled a ball of writhing worms - to me anyway. 😳 • Your face does look orange/ruddy at the start of the video. • It's for the best that you deactivate the Techmoan blog - there was stuff out there (including a selfie with the puppets and your Mrs) that I am sure you didn't realize was still there. • I care as little for the U S. President & family as you probably do for the Royal Family. 😉 • I thought there was a huge flat slice of ham on your cooker when you started to talk about the disgusting breakfast in a can. Take care 🤍🤍
There’s a big fat ham in all the Mission Impossible bits too.
I think you've invented Gogglebox for food.
Gobblebox?
RE: Breakfast - should have stuck with toast. The cat provided added value for the algorithm. - Does Britain have those Monster Cereals? Frankenberry? Count Chocula? I was thinking the the worst possible breakfast item would be BooBerry with Heinz beans... then you'd have Beans on Ghost. (Am I bored at work right now? Maybe...)
There’s no way I could eat the amount of sugar now in kids cereals. We do have some things like that, but perhaps there seems to be some regulation about selling kids cereal of the sort you’d get in the US.
OMG those noodles !! Yumm..... I'm trying to find that
This is the noodle source: https://www.yodobashi.com/product/100000001006302585/ カップヌードル 辛麺 And it looks like they first came out in 2021 so "spicy noodle" variety seems more than a limited run. I am intrigued as well!
RE: Royal family... it just occurred to me... British folks don't seem THAT bothered that the Queen died. Like... they all seemed kind of "over it" pretty quickly and no one seemed to wear a hairshirt or cry ot "why? why? why?" in the street. I suppose I assumed that after the rending of garments that happened after Princess Di's death there would be a similar outpouring for the old girl (I call her "Lossy" as well... as in "lost her coloines" amiright???). Maybe that the difference between being "well known" and being a "celebrity."
One day I’ll have to tell the story of how I accidentally killed both the Queen Mother and Princess Di. It’s a weird one but the Mrs will verify it’s 100% true.
RE: "Lossy"... "O' Lossy, she was a fine old gal..." I also don't understand the "well of course data is missing." I kind of want to say "Pssk... all recording technology removes information! Analog mastering was invented to remove and unwanted noise!" Digital recording removes harmonics information (doesn't even pick it up) due to the limits of the tech (can't have perfectly round sine waves when you're dealing in zeros and ones. Don't blame me... take it up with maths!)
Really appreciated the 'making of' section - I did wonder at the time how it was all filmed so this was great. The mystery meat/soylent green segments are also very welcome.
Regarding ready meals including the all day breakfast. The difference in quality between frozen ready meals and chilled ready meals is vast. Chilled ready meals are far superior, and typically take half the time to cook, thus saving 50% on energy costs. You can freeze most of them, but you might need to defrost them overnight in the fridge before use. I noticed with Toad in the Hole the frozen one is very greasy and oily, but the chilled one is not. The chilled ready meals are around £3 each in Asda, or you can buy any 3 for £7.50. I believe Tesco have a similar offer. I hope this is helpful.
I agree, but good food doesn’t make a fun video - I like the truly appalling almost inedible stuff when it comes to video content.
The lossy thing is spec warriors being idiots. Ask them any wnqutbing is better and you get specs back and not a reason or original thought
The "Reminds me of an old TV" section would make a great short video. It seems a shame to keep it restricted to Patreon.
There’s plenty of nice people here who can see it.
Mat, most people using drive thru's will just take the food home with them. Although I have eaten in the car before to be fair. I never fancy the ambiance of my local maccies
In the ancient past when I worked for living - I’d do overtime on a Saturday and drive in to work. I’d stop off at McDonald’s at 7:30 AM to get a Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, Hash Brown and Coffee to eat at my desk. I’d park in front, walk in, get my breakfast and drive off before the Drive-In queue had advanced by even one car. I’ll still never understand why anyone back then chose to sit in their car for ten or more minutes rather than being in and out in less than two and on their way. This happened for an over a decade and it was the same every time.
Just chiming in to say the website redirect worked for me in the US on 3/5/2024 at 16:45 EST. :-)
I hope it works on the 3rd May for me too. ;-)
Great show, Mat - thanks. Regarding third-party incursions when you're trying to film something, there's an old film crew Jedi mind trick that works pretty much every time: you put a walkie-talkie up to your mouth while holding up your hand in the 'halt' position, then approach and tell the intruder that you're trying to get a shot and would they mind waiting for just a moment or two while you finish. The walkie-talkie prop and the hand gesture makes the person assume, initially, you're a cop and, when you speak to them, they're in an already-compliant frame of mind. It's a bit of a prickish thing to do, so I wouldn't recommend it, but it works. Also - the restoration show arcade machine bit of this vid is absolutely superb! The disdain that the production crew of that show have for their audience is palpable. I bet they use the 'halt' sign and walkie talkie Jedi mind trick without compunction.
And if you wear a Hi-Vis vest and a hardhat and carry a clipboard, you can go almost anywhere and people won't bother you. Not relevant to this video, but a good tip for urban exploration.
Great extras video Matt, love it. One comment about the Lossy vs. Lossless process that I remember from years ago, (and I think the guy was talking about lossy photos, though I think it's the same issue). When you use lossy, everything is dialed in to the exact settings that the engineers plan on you using. With those settings unchanged, they really can come off as indistinguishable. It's when you start making adjustments, (i.e., stretching out the e.q., boosting one set of frequencies, etc.,) that's when the compressed data falls apart and it can sound terrible. With the lossless files, you can boost or cut frequencies, do what you want with filtering, and the sound will handle it better.
A little over twenty years ago as lossy audio compression tuning was edging into aural transparency (NeroAAC, musepack, LAME, Vorbis) it was established procedure that double blind testing was *required* before forum posters could opine a priori on the shortcomings of a given format. Very humbling process as it showed both how far the codecs had come and how limited most people's (mine included!) hearing/setup really is. Now with BD's we've come full circle, suddenly its "lossless, or it's junk" without anyone even acknowledging (aware of?) the placebo elephant in the room. Video codec performance is a lot easier to critique when the results are staring you right in the face, especially with different encoding houses working on discs in different regions.
Hiya, Fitted the A139Pro to my our car at the weekend, thanks for the review last week, my other half is very pleased with it. Also for simple website redirection to YouTube I used ‘Hover’ last year, seem simple enough https://www.hover.com/tld/buy-com-domain Last year it was £12.53 to register for first year £14.20 for subsequent years, meant I didn’t have to pay anything else for hosting etc, cheers
I’m glad the camera worked out. Check the footage in a few days to make sure it’s doing what you want - pointing in the right direction etc and make any tweaks necessary - then you should be able to just let it do its thing. If it ever beeps at you - that means it’s not happy with something…if you’re using a recommended memory card that shouldn’t happen though. As for the domains - I’ve moved it earlier today to a different host - hopefully in a week it’ll be pointing where I want it to.
I like the food videos too. If you want your website to point somewhere else I'll offer to help. You at a minimum need just one landing page file and optionally an htaccess file.
I’ve just moved the hosting company so everything is pending at the mo.
I'm still here for those food sections, if it's good noodles then brilliant, if it's clearly going to be bad then I'm here for the sarcasm. Ashens is good but he doesn't come close in the moan department.
Those "making of" segments are always good, so if you don't have anything else for a monthly Patreon update, just throw one of those out there and call it good. Really enjoy the TROMI episodes, so much so that after TROMI 3, I bought the entire set on Blu-Ray. Had some second thoughts while waiting for it to arrive, but when it got here and I watched a few episodes, I found it fairly enjoyable--mostly for nostalgia reasons, but it's okay with me. Also watching just now I thought up what I would consider a "killer" MI mission briefing segment. You approach a seemingly random person on the street and this conversation follows: "How do you do?" "I'm alright. Do you like movies about gladiators?" "What's that?" "Have you ever seen a grown man naked?" [Indignantly] "What are you on about?" "You'll find what you need in the phone booth." "Oh, okay, got it--thanks." Also, I'm not a fan of mushrooms either ever since an incident when I was about 10 years old, eating tuna casserole at the dining table and subsequently lost my lunch (well, supper actually).
Really enjoyed the "making of" section -- love behind-the-scenes stuff like that.
That TV-show 🤣. The woman just touching the high voltage connection: "that's where the video goes through", hilarious 🤣. Would have been cool if she was zapped by the high voltage 😈. But seriously, I would find watching such a thing an insult to my brain... That's why I watch The 8-bit Guy, Technology Connections, Adrian's Digital Basement and Techmoan on YouTube, they don't insult my brain 😜.
Let me grab a tin of Coke to drink while I watch this.
Just the oddcasts alone have always been worth the Patreon! I love them. Even after a bunch of years. Perhaps even more today... Oh, i completely agree. If there is a technology that throws 90% of the audio signal away and sounds fantastic, who cares what it does! My lowest quality file is a 96 kbit mp3. But I love the music, so whatever right..
The fact that Mat's Brilliant Audio Format is lossy would matter for certain applications, like if you wanted to extract a vocal using out-of-phase stereo and then subtract it from the original to get the instrumental track. For this reason I only use 96 rpm ultra-audiophile vinyl, the only true way.
Just thought I'd mention - I have a lab stool that's older than me - it's still going strong! (British made, heavy as hell - up and down screw mechanism. They don't make them like they used to (or maybe they should - and a lab stool is the way to go). Thanks for the hard work.
I wonder where I could get an old one.
Sky should pay you, added secret restoration to my watch list. Great update
Please don't ever stop torturing yourself with low grade food, it is a treat to watch.
I did not know about those chapter shortcuts, thanks for the info.
I wasn’t aware of them either until recently so I assumed I wouldn’t be the only one.
Why is George Galloway in the Patreon thumbnail? :D I'll get around to watching this soon, it's always good to have an update.
I'll be honest, I love your videos Mat, but these oddcasts are my favourite.
