Karaoke 8-Track Christmas

That was fun! I was shocked to hear that folks tune out when they learn it's a karaoke device. Thank you for sharing that Christmas Miracle, and wishing you a Happy New Year!

I will stand up and say I love the Karaoke videos. Not for the singing, but for the ways it adapted technology. I have been waiting for a video about a device that used all 8 tracks for separate songs and was rewarded (not kidding here) with this. But you can't blame 8-Track for Karaoke (I know that was tongue in cheek) since you you also demoed the Panapic version of party in a box. Just saying. I think that any culture that can take the lemons that it is given (8-track in this case) and make lemonade (Karaoke, a taste enjoyed by many, but not all) has got vitality. Oh, and happy holidays! All of them. :-)

Ever heard of an 8 track cassette? Yes, 8 tracks on a standard cassette, intended for home studio use Back in the 90s Tascam made one called the 488. Others may have made them as well I never bought one - the audio quality and crosstalk were supposed to be pretty mediocre, and digital was coming down in price

As a little kid, I had no clue whatsoever what "Jingles Bells" was talking about. I thought it was saying "won horsesloppen sleigh" and "bellsunboptails rings" (as though that were a "type" of ring? Like, "five golden rings?") What do I know from sleigh riding growing up in Los Angeles?" Still not sure what "Deck the Halls" is on about! Reading the lyrics, I am pretty sure it's an ode to pagan rituals!

8-track is the perfect medium for karaoke. Most people who grab the mic will sing with wobbly pitch and tempo control anyway...

I found myself explaining 8-Track to a friend recently, who did indeed assume it meant eight actual music tracks. I've got several cartridges but no player, so despite everyone's protestations, I do intend to get one, if only to play those Shell travelogue ones I have. A merry Christmas to you, the missus, Bees Knees... and what was that squirrel called? Mr Nawty? You've kept me entertained for another year, and are always good company. I never mastered getting a tape out of an 8 track player. I'd not pull hard enough or get it sideways and the player would eat it

Was there ever any theory that 8 was chosen because its shape is an infinite loop?

All the time Mat had his fingers by that mains switch I was thinking "I hope he has unplugged it". The music on those cartridges was actually quite pleasant in a BGM type of way. Have a good Christmas everyone.

Nice early 1980s look to that machine 😃. The sound it was making in the beginning when switching the head reminds me of dry bearings, maybe a drop of oil or some grease in the bearing(s) of the capstan is not a bad idea, but of course be careful the capstan stays clean of oil! And of course, a silly karaoke video is always fun 😅. Wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Mat! (and all the others here)
