Patreon Video Odd-cast November 2023

A Patreon exclusive update video containing a heady mixture of things you don’t need to know, things you don’t want to know and added ephemera.

Here it is. https://youtu.be/tB9ifywSTz0

I feel this one needs the visuals intact for quite a few sections, so I haven’t posted an audio only version this time.

P.S. Here’s a link to that final Miikshi episode https://youtu.be/RlqydFW-rvs

Ha ha, you're a young man (younger than me anyway) and you're already worrying about what'll happen to your stuff when you're gone. I've been there for years. As someone who does sell on eBay, I'm sad to say that despite the fees and a propensity to always side with scammers (if they're buyers), eBay is an effective way to shift non mainstream items (mainstream would be TVs, X-Boxes, bicycles etc. for which Gumtree or FB Marketplace are beter). I have a mega clear-out every 2 or 3 years and have sold 100s of items on eBay. There's a lot of psychology in creating eBay ads and good quality photos are paramount. My plan, before the grim reaper calls, is to gradually acqure all the items I've always wanted and sell off everything else. I try t limit myself to small items that fit in those 4L or 9L "Really Useful Boxes". . have you photographed & catalogued everything yet?

Wot.. you have Taco Bell??? We don't have that here in Northern Ireland

T
Techmoan · December 23, 2023

There aren’t many of them - mainly just the big cities so I was happy to see one open up locally - we don’t tend to get anything like that here. They’re in the process of a big expansion so expect one to turn up in a couple of years.

ROFL at the end. That is some whacky humor you got. Love it.

You know you could make a small channel monetizing ramen reviews. Maybe it would send you about 10 bucks a week but just enough to reimburse you for the noodles

J
Jason Adams · December 1, 2023

In regards to selling stuff, I think you’re underestimating the power of the “Techmoan Effect.” Having a copy of a machine featured on your channel is one thing, having the EXACT ITEM that was featured in the video, with intimate knowledge of what does ans doesn’t work, well that’s even better, right? Some of these items were collectible before your vids, after I’m sure it’s gone up as stocks have gone down. I lived through the 80’s, have always been interested in stereo and video (I’m a radio and mobile DJ who preserves peoples videotapes and photos digitally on the side) and I’ve never even heard of a lot of the stuff on your channel, much less seen one. Keep up the great work, I’ll be letting my patreon subscription renew for 2024.

I like your style simply more than the click-bait ;-). After your B&O video, I told my best friend, he just told me he had also still something lying around to be fixed! I'm curious to see it in action. And yes, Fisher I know as a cheap rubbish brand... And about a 4K monitor: if you use a Mac, it doesn't go back to 1080p, just everything gets scaled up: text will be bigger and sharper, even Windows does that today... I use 5K at home, never want to go back, I can see al the details in my pictures much better, yes, also if the focus was not perfect :-P. At work, I always have to adapt back to the old 1080p screen with the big, visible pixels... The AI stuff is hilarious, but I can imagine it to be useful for some people. I guess I would just play a bit with it, and then get bored, like I did with Siri.

Brian Cummings · November 30, 2023

couple things: 1. i love these, i feel like i'm getting a better sense of who you are with these videos. 2. that noodle logo TechMoan needs to be a tee shirt/coffee mug. I'd definitely buy one of each.

P
Phil R · November 30, 2023

On the subject of you getting rid of various bits of tech - why not put up a list for Patreons of what you don't want to keep and how much you want for it? It would probably be a lot less stressful than eBay, and I'd wager that your Patreons are a nice bunch of folks! There have been many times where you've featured an old audio device or whatever, and I've thought about trying to get one. Usually anything to do with MiniDiscs!

G
Grace Robbins · November 30, 2023

Without a doubt Patrons would buy items immediately; it's the international shipping that's the headache.

I will raise my hand and say I would love to have the Philips BGM Tape system that worked with all the tapes you were supplied. But I also got the sense that you hooked it up to your HiFi yourself. To substitute I bought an Audio DVD (my one and only) with K-Mart (US chain of stores) Christmas music from the 70's. I let that run for hours.

My partner went to Thailand 11 days ago and apart from talking to the cat and saying thanks to the lady in Dominos pizza, I hadn't spoken at all until I went to shoot a bit of stuff for YouTube and found I had to take a run up at talking in full sentences. I wonder how the new AI know it was the Founders coffee Co considering the word is covered up.

Getting older, having a heart attack, a stroke… stratatac or a hoke… fall down the stairs..! About pissed myself at your misfortunes there 🤣 wolly!! You’re doing great Mat, absolutely love your videos and I know my £1 per month will not make you a millionaire ‘yet’, however I’ll be contributing more very soon 😁 Lee

Loved the hot noodle bit! Your face was priceless. Following on from your previous recommendation of the original Japanese Cup Noodle, I ordered a sackful of them only to find out they triggered my IBS in the most violent manner… I was gutted but my nephew was extremely pleased about it as he got to eat them all instead! Back to the UFOs then (which don’t trigger me, I don’t know why one and not the other)

S
Sarah Fenway · November 29, 2023

Regarding monitors… stop buying LG ones! They’re surprisingly unreliable. Not sure what it is, but they seem to have some quality control issues. (I personally use Dell, but I am not trying to shill for another brand)

T
Techmoan · November 29, 2023

Oh it was a Dell that died. Before that it was a Samsung that bit it - so now it’s LG’s turn to let me down.

S
Sarah Fenway · November 29, 2023

And when can I expect Techmoan noodles in my local Spar?

G
Grace Robbins · November 30, 2023

The Techmoan noodles would come with a free tech-related item/coupon... akin to Cracker Jack boxes of old.

A

About having a printed copy of the article…”Something else to go in the skip when I’m dead.” Laughed out loud and for a bit on that. Really funny.

C
CURTISSCOTT · November 29, 2023

I know exactly what you mean about wanting to find new things. I remember the 80's too. It was glorious! Well, consider this: How about finding something old that has features neither you nor your viewers have ever seen or heard? Do you remember how you felt when you heard dbx disc? Check out Bob Carver and some of his patented products. His amplifiers were legendary. But his signal processors were jaw-dropping as well. If you get the Carver Receiver - Model AVR100 - and investigate the features that are unique to Carver. What you'll discover will absolutely bake your noodle. And when you consider that this was released in the late 80's-90's; - It was akin to alien technology back then. And, to this date - no other brand has been able to offer similar features because his patents were so original and described a very real phenomena that processing could not be duplicated without violating an intellectual property right. You will be edified by this journey.

T
Tunix · November 29, 2023

I could almost feel the pain when I saw your eyes watering after that spoonful of cup noodles. I hope you didn't sacrifice your digestive system for a few clicks… Some of those overly spicy seasonings are probably more of a joke article than an actual meal. On the other hand, some folks are really into that stuff, almost cult like. At least sauces like "Blair’s 16 Million Reserve" seem to be highly sought after collectibles. Regarding getting rid of stuff: If preservation is the goal (rather than profit), maybe some museums would be interested? I remember that the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester had a few segments of consumer tech from different eras, loosely arranged in a timeline like manner. Or maybe open a Techmoan museum…well, probably not what you have in mind but I would totally visit it 😁

D
Duncan · December 15, 2023

The November article isn't in the print edition of The Scotsman, but his previous article from 15th August was in the print edition, and is available from Historic Newspapers: https://www.historic-newspapers.co.uk/original-newspapers/newspaper-titles/?day=15&month=aug&year=2023 (I've bought a few old newspapers from them before, and they're quite reliable.) In that August article, he writes: "Techmoan manages to create some of the most engaging, insightful and thoroughly addictive material out there."

T

Apparently the Palmer Squares are from my neighborhood (though I'd never heard of them before). I didn't expect to see my local neighborhood park featured on the cover of a hip-hop album shown in a Techmoan video.

Apologies for butting in here, but can anyone remember the model of camera that Techmoan used for optical zoom - a picture of a bird in one of the recent Patreon updates? I'm scrabbling around for birthday presents for my wife and I'm getting desperate!

Hey Mat, i like how frank you are - refreshing in this day and age. I often wonder who's going to take care of all my stuff if i cark it. Only 47 so a bit off hopefully. Whatever you do, don't list gear to sell on Facebook Marketplace, unless you want to have death be brought forward by 10 years from sheer frustration dealing with idiots. I recon if you started an eBay store with your brand your stuff would sell like hotcakes, of course you still need to ship it out etc... Either that or throw up a shopify account - some people would go nuts to get their hands on something you've handled... still again, need to deal with shipping... Not an easy solution either way. Sometimes i give stuff away cause selling is just not worth it - with having to deal with .. people.

G
Grace Robbins · November 28, 2023

• I'd be satisfied not talking to anyone all day. Healthy, no, but I'd be happy with that. • You look nice in your casual comfy wardrobe - and that's a beautiful screen saver. • No illness/stroke/death please. I, for one, would be devastated. 😫 • Noodle pain 🥵! You're brave taking a second bite 😳 I hope you didn't get heartburn later (I would have). • I remember when all magazines were microfilmed and you could view them in a library and print an article for research purposes. Something tells me that isn't done any more. • I love it when you open parcels/packages and share with us what you received. That, and the Victorinox appearances. • That photo AI app is incredible; thanks for sharing it. • I loved the ending 😂! Take care 🤍

J

So that's why noodles have become so expensive. It's the Techmoan effect! That guy is probably taking money from Big Noodle.

Right! I went on eBay after seeing that video and some clown has a six pack up for $150 AU.

D

I hadn't heard of Miikshi before! I'm only a 52 year old man, can't understand what that wasn't on my radar! But seriously, I love the mix of Muppet/Thunderbird/Mr. Rogers sensibilities. And it's funny too!

I might suggest that if you want to keep from cashing in your ticket, you might want to pass on the ghost pepper noodles. It is entertaining for your patreons, but it isn't worth it, Matt. Thanks for the update.

D
David Peaker · November 28, 2023

All those things I didn't need to know, or want to know made a very enjoyable video, maybe the added ephemera made all the difference.

M
Mike Ziniti · November 28, 2023

Snip out the bit about the microdrive and put it on your Pedant channel. Also, I’m adding “Burning is not a flavor” to my cooking vernacular, right along with Alton Brown’s “Char is not a valid flavor.”

M
Mike Ziniti · November 29, 2023

BTW, I’m not being snarky. Mat(t) used to have a second channel that was called something like “Internet Pedant” where he would upload other things that either wouldn’t work on his channel or would draw copyright strikes. But I can’t find that channel now, so maybe I made it up?

It's a valid idea; although I am aware of Mat's aversion to international shipping (a very valid concern). So, if anyone, it would be a UK only sale?

L

I was wondering why there was a Mr beast video as the top recommended video while watching this oddcast.. and as soon as you mentioned them I immediately understood why.. https://imgur.com/a/y3jN2FM I too have never seen a single video by them, I am not subbed to them, and have no desire to, so there’s absolutely zero reason for the algorithm to recommend them to me, but now that you mentioned them and obviously the algorithm detected that you did, I don’t doubt that Mr beast videos will now be recommended for videos to come.

T
Techmoan · November 28, 2023

Now we just need Mr Beast to say he’s never watched Techmoan and I’ll become l millionaire from the recommended visits.

C
CBits Tech · November 28, 2023

I'm sure many of us would relish the chance to plunder the Techmoan lockup. What a treasure trove it must be. I wonder if it might make some interesting YouTube content. You (Mat) shoot some handheld footage in the lockup such as "Here's something I don't need anymore," and go on to tell the story (in the lockup) of the purchase and related video. Maybe find a couple of items at once. Back to the studio for some high quality photographs (with your good lighting). Do draft listings on eBay. Comparatively easy video editing. Post it on YouTube and eBay at the same time. Hope for a bidding battle between Techmoan fanboys, and get extra views on the original videos too.

M
Matt Tester · November 28, 2023

I can't remember if you have mentioned trying the Cup Noodle Soba variety before, they're a similar style where you pour away the water. I had their chilli flavour for lunch today and it's easily my favourite of the Soba range. I can't handle super spicy stuff and these are very reasonable, great on a cold day. The flavouring of isn't packed with onion, I can never get rid of the flavour of onion and it gives me awful flatulence...

A
Amro · November 28, 2023

I have to say I feel death’s hand on my shoulder a lot too - I worry about it all the time these days. I’m always thinking “what if I die tomorrow”. I’m not that old … maybe it’s the typical pessimism of Northern England folk plus being in poor health (thanks MS) and the frankly awful experience of being the executor of my friend’s “estate” after she died (of the “Big C” as they say round here). It was a nightmare emptying out of the house - she collected so much “stuff” and I couldn’t “put it on eBay” as some suggested to me - and no one wanted to come and buy it. In the end I had to pay for someone to take it away to the tip. It’s sad but nothing seems to be of any value when you’re even in a little hurry. I was so thoroughly tiredof it that I promised I’d never leave someone with the same nightmare as me.

T
Techmoan · November 28, 2023

The exact same thing happened with my parents house. Realistically the contents were worth a few thousand, but the house was worth a couple of hundred thousand. It made no sense to spend a load of time parting out 1% of the value, so instead it all went to the British Heart Foundation. But it makes you realise that the things you possess are really worth nothing to most people.

I always look forward to these! Thank you! But yeah, I also heard stories like the one Antz just wrote. I'm actually going to put stuff in a last will.. So they know what to toss out and what to sell... I also don't really get it. The carts are about music, the Microdrive isn't.. But it's really tiny, isn't it? Oh, here in NL someone repairs the DD Walkmans.. Including the broken cog. Don't know the guy, but he has a lot of positive feedback. But I guess there's always going to be someone in the UK as well.. Anyway, try not to die any time soon, or go blind. I really would miss these videos! 😂 Oh, 4k on a Mac, doesn't it use a Retina resolution then? I use a 5k monitor at 1440p. Super sharp, which is what I like. But no 5k of course. Happened once and it was challenging to get back to a readable resolution as I, well, couldn't read anything.. 🤣

T
Techmoan · November 28, 2023

I’m using 1440 too - 4K needs a 75” screen before it makes any sense.

R
Roland Bogush · November 28, 2023

Lovely to hear from you as always! I don't know how much of a coincidence this is, but the names of those people who recognised you struck a distant chord, and then I remembered that Milo and Jake were characters in a children's tv show I used to watch with the kids 15-20 years back called The Tweenies. I'm sure you've never had to watch it, Mat. Maybe it's still going.... Regarding YouTube viewership, I wonder if you've been much affected by the Ad Block issues that have been going on - has your income been dropping because of all the ad blockers in use? Did they pick up when You Tube blocked people with Ad Blockers watching on Chrome?

a
antzpantz · November 28, 2023

I can't remember if I had mentioned this on your Patreon before, but re: getting with of all of your stuff - I work as a real estate photographer and there was a property whose owner had passed away and, unfortunately, he was a hoarder. He didn't have any children so his nephews flew across the country (during COVID times!) to clear out his home. This multi-levelled house was FULL of audio equipment, amplifiers, speakers... I had never seen anything like it. And those poor nephews had to deal with it. That was when I had discovered they offloaded the equipment to an auctioneer that takes in deceased estate belongings. Audio equipment clearance sale? 😅 So... not that you'll be dying any time soon (I HOPE!) but I think an auctioneer might be the best bet to quickly clear all of your stuff!

T
Techmoan · November 28, 2023

I think it’s probably the best idea. I probably need to do an inventory of my locker, putting stickers and estimated prices on the most valuable items and then find the details of a specialty auction house. Then give all the info to the Mrs. Good to have a plan.

Here's the perfect thumbnail for this video: Mat in his kitchen, you see only his reflection in the microwave with a painful grimace as his hands reach up to grab his throat in a vain attempt to stop the burning pain of the ghost pepper noodles. The microwave floats off into space with Mat doomed to spend eternity trapped in the microwave just like Terence Stamp's Zod in Superman II. 😬
