8-Track Boomboxes fixed up (includes uncut Edition) - UPDATED

This week I’ve been attempting some repairs - as well as a Patreon experiment.

Before you click on the embedded video above or the link below - I'd recommend taking a moment to read this post, because there are two different versions of the video here.

Whenever I’m making a video I assemble all the clips I might use into a rough edit. I then tidy things up and make the video snappier by snipping out any extraneous sections that slow things down or don't add value.

When the initial pre-edit version of this video ended up almost 40 mins long I realised I'd be doing quite a bit of cutting. So I thought I’d give you the chance to see the ‘uncut edition’ as well. (UPDATE - this was a bad idea - don't worry, following the feedback this experiment will not be repeated).

Patreon has recently added the ability to upload videos directly to the platform (in 1080p and at a low bitrate). I wanted to *try this feature out* and I thought this would be a good video to use for this experiment. I wanted to see how well the Patreon player worked. What better video to try it with than one that would normally not be seen.

The embedded video at the top of this post is the 'uncut' (Patron only) version. This is not the finished edit. It contains errors.

The snappier (public edit) version on YouTube is linked here. https://youtu.be/_hpLKp4Aaag

Unless you're interested in seeing how the sausage is made, I'd recommend watching the YouTube version.

OK, that’s a big enough wall of text from me. I hope everyone has a great week. Look after yourselves.

UPDATED

I’ve read the feedback about the Patreon video player. There’s no better way for me to discover how well (or otherwise) something functions than trying it out.

This was an *experiment* - that didn't work out and therefore will not be repeated.

I just watched the coolest video. Old vending machines with Nixie tubes. They count down the time for the noodles to be done or even your hamburger to vend. They are in Japan. It would be the best jaunt import. Search “vending machine extravaganza” 100 vending machine Japan or something like that. Experience Japan channel

I'm sure its something that I've forgotten from a previous 8 track video, but why does it sound like they tape is coming up to speed when changing between program numbers? Isn't the tape always moving and it's just the head bouncing down to the next track on the tape?

T
Techmoan · August 4, 2023

I haven’t noticed it - but if that is happening there could be two reasons… The power required to jump the head could be briefly slowing the motor, or the movement of the head could be slowing the tape by briefly pushing against it.

Would it be accurate to say more movies have cars with 8 tracks than compact cassettes? I think the loading has more cinematic flair

A

Also America was much more into 8 Tracks than rest of the world so they persisted for a lot longer than elsewhere

Same. I wish there was a way that Patreon could integrate with YouTube and have a videos from your Patreon subscription tab. I watch most of my YouTube on a TV because I don't watch television

Yikes, Mat... so, you currently have to plan forward and essentially get 3/4 month's worth of videos in the bag prior to your holiday at the end of September 😵‍💫 - I thought - September is a long way off, but it's closer than it feels.

T
Tom Beardmore · July 28, 2023

Have you tried "Rust-oleum"?

T

No, I’m not familiar with it.

T
Tom Beardmore · July 28, 2023

Mat, here's a suggestion: Cleaning battery contacts can easily be done using white distilled vinegar applied to cotton swabs. Multiple wipes might be needed, but it works, and it cleans the contacts organically. It won'd damage the contacts at all. Give it a try sometime. Really, you'll be delighted.

T
Techmoan · July 28, 2023

That works fine for getting the green ‘acid’ to dissolve but I’m not sure it’ll do much for good old rust. These terminals didn’t have any battery leakage issues, I think though that they must have been in a damp environment to get rusted throughout - from one end to the other

B
Bruno Philipe Resende Silva · July 27, 2023

I had no issues with the Patreon player. If I may suggest, and if you feel inclined to publish two cuts on Patreon and YouTube, using the Patreon player could be a way to play copyrighted audio without worrying about YouTube's ruthless strikes.

T

It might not get blocked (yet) but I suspect there's still some legal issues with playing music that I'm not allowed to play without licensing.

Watched the short version, then HAD to watch the long one to spot the differences... Loved how you measured the power consumption with your battery power supply. The Patreon player worked fine on my Windows PC. I have my TV as a secondary monitor, so that the Matt binge viewing happens in my sofa. Congrats, you make me nostalgic of a tech I never owned!

S
Steve Cooper (StevesTechShed) · July 25, 2023

G
Gordo · July 25, 2023

Unlike rotary pots, sliders are very easy to clean from the front, outside of the case. Usually there's a layer of black fabric to stop dust from entering, press your extension tube through the gap in the fabric, squirt and slide..

V
VWestlife · July 25, 2023

And a little contact cleaner goes a long way. No need to hose it down like you're putting out a fire.

G
Gordo · July 25, 2023

Matt, the fact that this set has a 12V input means it uses a low-voltage DC motor. It would only run slow if it had a main-operated synchronous motor (synchronous means synchronized to the mains frequency). In all likelihood, the power-pack on the back converrts the 120V AC to 12V DC to run the set. Synchronous motors can often be identified by being larger, having fans on them and the copper windings visible..

T
Techmoan · July 25, 2023

Yes it’d also 220v which I’d forgotten. I deleted all the voltage and loose wire section from the finished video. I really regret posting the unedited version now as all the factual errors that get cut from the finished videos are still present here for everyone to see. Rest assured that I won’t be repeating this experiment.

Having watched both versions, the shorter one felt a bit rushed. I didn't miss the scenes you left out entirely, but the ones you chopped up into short clips seemed too hurried.

T
Techmoan · July 25, 2023

I needed to cut out references to errors, tests or things that didn't happen elsewhere in the video which resulted in a lot of snips here and there.

R
Rick Parsons · July 25, 2023

Hi - loved this one - yes, I like the design as well, it reminds me of the very good Marantz cassette recorders. you could try and treat the yellowing plastic with a wipe of Peroxide, that usually works on PC beige. For removing tight knobs the best way I have found is with a pair of bicycle tyre levers protected from the surface with a pice of cloth. It applies even pressure to both sides at once. The Patreon phone app plays the video ok but it doesn't seem to want to go full screen.

P
Phil Collins · July 25, 2023

That was fun. Also outed Dylan as a light baritone who just got played too fast.

V
VWestlife · July 25, 2023

I'm sure it has already been mentioned, but the fact that the LearJet player can run on batteries or 12 volts DC means it uses a DC motor, and therefore the frequency of the AC mains doesn't matter -- whether it's 50 or 60 Hz, it just gets converted down to DC to run the motor, so the speed will be unaffected.

T
Techmoan · July 25, 2023

Yes it’d also 220v which I’d forgotten ..so I deleted all the voltage and loose wire section from the finished video.

I watched the "uncut" sausage video via Patreon, and what actually worked well is using the app on my phone to cast to my Google TV. I definitely see why you'd remove the segments working on the Lear unit. :-)

P
Peter Laws · July 24, 2023

Hard to tell - was that a Lear unit? Or just branded that way because it played 8-track cartridges? The 8-track was (along with executive jets), a Bill Lear joint. As for 1977. new cars were still coming with 8-tracks if you wanted it. Cassettes were making big inroads into the car market by then and (from the 8-track point of view) about to take over.

T
Techmoan · July 24, 2023

It seems to be a Lear unit - I don’t know if they got someone else to make it for them, but their branding was the only name on it.

C
CrimsonPig808 · July 24, 2023

I'd like to make a quick comment on the Lear Jet player. (Showing my age), my best childhood friend actually had and used this player when we were growing up. I'm thinking that would have been, maybe a year or two before 1970. I also had the definite impression that the blue top was red on his, but that could be a memory-colorblindness issue. How he had it set up was he kept the player in his bedroom with the 2nd speaker running along his desk and bookshelf. He left that there all the time. When he wanted to use it as a 'portable', he simply unplugged the connection and used the single speaker. I'm now wondering if that meant he lost the 2nd channel, or if the player could sense the single speaker and adjust for it, (probably not). I remember thinking it was neat that he could bring along his 8-track when we went to the neighborhood pool. I remember it sounded pretty good at the time. Your degraded performance could be aging electronics. Also, the connectors that holds the 2 sides together were much more robust on his. His never came apart once they were connected. I'm thinking there's more to that middle connector, with the metal on top, that, perhaps held the 2nd speaker when it was connected. I can't remember, but I know when he was carrying it around with both speakers, I don't think it ever came apart like yours did. Thanks, Matt, for the memories this has brought back.

T
Techmoan · July 24, 2023

I was wondering the same thing about auto mono mix down when used on just one speaker. One way to test would be for me to record my ‘left right’ stereo test onto a cart. I don’t really have the time at the moment and I’ve also just dropped off the Learjet player at my storage locker.

D

I didn't see any issue with the 'uncut' video, I enjoyed it. I however, echo others in that I prefer watching videos on YouTube where possible. I wouldn't mind the odd video on Patreon only though.

C
CrimsonPig808 · July 24, 2023

If I may add my US anecdotal two-cents worth, I actually prefer the patreon app version approach of patreon-only videos. I watched the video on both my iPhone, and iPad; both worked fine. You do have to manually select the full-screen option in the corner, (I think YouTube does it automatically when you tilt the screen. But, generally, the quality of the video stream was better when watching the Patreon feed. Of course, it's the content that matters and yours are the best! Send me a VHS tape version, and I'll resurrect my old tape player, just to watch it. (Yes, in my subtle, American way, I'm saying I like your Patreon-only videos).

B
Brad Jones · July 24, 2023

I'm still stumped as to why my iPad won't orientate in full screen correctly, yet the iPhone will. I'm one of those people who just does "TV things" on a TV, as YouTube browsing on a tablet is, for me, definitely an "end off the evening now the TV's off" thing!

B

I'm afraid same thing here. I like the longer videos, but can't use Downie to download. Not really that big of a deal, I normally watch everything on my TV, but it also works on the computer of course... More video means more fun parts, so eh :)

M
MVVblog · July 24, 2023

I report my experience with videos on Patreon, if that helps. I have 1000+ patrons on my Patreon page and almost all of them shot me down when I proposed videos uploaded directly to Patreon. The main reason is that the Patreon app is a pain in the neck. Almost everyone prefers YouTube because they can watch the video horizontally and also on other devices than computers or smartphones.

T
Techmoan · July 24, 2023

Yes I can see why a lot of people don’t like the idea. The only problem with the YouTube uploads is that websites are now sharing the unlisted links - and sometimes I might want to make a video that I really don’t want available to non-patrons. I think my only option if I can’t put special videos on Patron is not to do this again, which is unfortunate.

I like very much the idea of having the longer cut available to watch! I suppose the only issue is patreon itself - the video auto stopped while I typed out this comment. Minor issue, if it means Patreon gets longer Techmoan vids!

Nick Jones · July 23, 2023

I had the little brother of that same General Electric player, which I purchased with my allowance savings in 1979. My player was half the length and mono, but I recall it sounded really good. It was the same gray chassis, big orange button and slide volume control. Like the one you have, mine also took 8 D-cell batteries and my weekly allowance barely kept up with the cost of batteries, so I never roamed with it, much. I could plug it into the mains and there was a headphone out jack, but that jack was only mono. My dad found an adapter to convert the stereo headphone plug to mono, so I didn't disturb the house too much. Back then, disco sounded just as good (or awful if you don't like disco) in mono as it did in stereo. BTW: I like the uncut version. I am a big nerd and I like all the extra bits thrown in.

The "Lear Jet" device reminds me of a Geiger counter. Something that would have seemed eerie to consumers during the early Cold War era, which is when I had originally assumed the unit originated The second unit also looks out of time, as you mentioned. Except it appears more futuristic. I feel like I saw a million of those in 1980s, which is why the sticker shock hit so hard! That's nearly $400 adjusted for inflation! But I get the impression that a high value was placed on portability back then and therefore the price reflected that. I wonder if the price was comparable to other similar units of the same function in 1977. Inflation rates from 1972 through the early 1980s were very high.

LIked LP version. Wonder if there was a boombox with 8-track AND cassette? Update: Made me want to play a couple of 8-Tracks. Most don't sound very good but there are a couple that sound better than they have any right to. One of them is a quad 8 of Live and Let Die soundtrack from Canada. It sounds VERY good. It does however, have one major flaw... the tracks are shifted 90 degrees to the left on program A. I made a corrected recording to quad reel-to-reel but of course never played it again after the first time. I just turn to the left when listening to the 8-track :-)

Nice founds, I like the completely different design of the different players, I guess in the 1960s nobody ever thought about how a boombox should look like... I know about reel to reel tape recorders with similar designs, having separate speakers that can be put on like doors on the device for transporting. BTW: if the device runs on DC power as well, of course, the mains frequency is not important as the motor runs on DC anyway... Good thing to tape off the lose mains connector, I guess it should go somewhere to a transformer, but didn't see it so quickly...

D
Duncan · July 24, 2023

There were Sanyo Radio cassettes that had the same clip on speaker approach. For a while they thought having two speakers as close together as in a Boombox would be pointless. The first normal Boombox format devices usually had a stereo expander function just like the GE in the video has.
