EXTRA - How I obtained the unobtainable new Yellow Sound Burger

A quick extra Patreon Exclusive video about how I got the ‘out of stock/unavailable’ Yellow Sound Burger delivered in under a week and with a discount.

https://youtu.be/8Mw5bcRTKGY

Why did I buy another? I just wanted to test for myself how long it took and whether I got charged any extras before mentioning this as an option for those who aren’t risk-averse.

Here's a NON-AFFILATED Amazon Japan link https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Audio-Technica-AT-SB727-YL-Lightweight-Bluetooth/dp/B0C3VWJHK4

Bear in mind if something goes wrong it will be difficult/impossible to resolve, so if that’s a worry, steer clear.

I wonder if they're still in stock after several weeks - I'm too lazy to switch to the Amazon JP site to find out, but I'd be impressed if they've kept up with demand.

T
Techmoan · June 28, 2023

Still in stock, although I believe the wall mounted CD player sold out.

Alisamiauz · June 25, 2023

About the possibility of it being broken, I ordered a Tiger Rice Cooker from Amazon Japan and it arrived broken. Sending it back was a bit confusing, at first Amazon gave me the usual Return Print Out, I put that on the box and tried to ship it back, but the Personnel at the Post Office said that it is not Austrian Post compliant. So I wrote a new Shipment Label together with the Personnel, the shipping worked and I got my Money refunded :) Only thing that was bitter, I had to pay the postal fees back to Japan

Thank you Matt so much for this. I’ve ordered one and have since received it! The only fear of this order was having to answer the question “What the hell did you order from Amazon Japan” to the wife! All the best with your bathroom renovation. They’re never fun to deal with.

T
Techmoan · June 20, 2023

It’s over and done with now fortunately. In a house with one toilet it wasn’t a fun week.

D
David Wouters · June 15, 2023

the black and white models are available for me to order in the netherlands from their local website it seems, with the product page claiming the sound burger to be added to the fixed, always available stock/range

David Wouters · June 15, 2023

it seems Audio Technica has launched this now to the masses, with the yellow version coming out later in the summer https://www.forbes.com/sites/marksparrow/2023/05/31/audio-technicas-sound-burger-deck-is-flipped-in-three-new-colors/?sh=71e05af36a5a

FYI, Mat, I bought one of those Denshe to-go games from Amazon.jp and after a few weeks, it became faulty. I returned it to Japan (they paid to have it collected) and a replacement arrived about two weeks later. I have no complaints about that service and it was not really any trouble to have it replaced.

T
Techmoan · June 12, 2023

That's good to know thanks - I thought it would be more hassle than a regular UK return.

S
Simon Arnold · June 12, 2023

Someone posted the unlisted YouTube video link to the Sound Burger group on Facebook a couple of days ago.

A
Andy Ihnatko · June 12, 2023

They knew that their product is named "Sound Burger" and yet they chose to name this colorway "yellow" instead of "mustard"? It's like they fear greatness.

B
Brad Jones · June 12, 2023

"Processed Cheese Slice" coloured.

V
Vladi Ivanov · June 12, 2023

Boy, I hope Audio Technica, Sony, Teac, Panasonic, whoever is left that did audio electronics pay attention to this pent-up interest. People are willing to spend a pretty penny for something good.

D
David Fulton · June 11, 2023

I appreciate the smart camera editing between the overhead and the midline view. I assume that one of those details that a casual viewer doesn't notice but is probably a lot of bother when you just want to get a quickie video out. Well done!

B
Brad Jones · June 11, 2023

I also note, almost amusingly, that the entire cost of buying a Sound Burger is less than just the stylus costs for my Rega RP6!

B
Brad Jones · June 11, 2023

Ordered! Buying something from overseas (of that value, anyway) is a totally new experience for me!

L
Lycan Witch · June 11, 2023

I ordered the yellow one about 3 hours after you posted this patreon post, total came out to ~$205 usd with shipping. Today I got the shipping confirmation and tracking info. Thanks for the heads up to your patreons :)

M
Mark Hesse · June 11, 2023

Sound Burger? I'm somewhat tempted, but don't really need one. Getting one would only be for Techmoan fandom street cred (more like Patreon cred I suppose). If there's ever a SB T-shirt I'll be all over it though. Hope you post some bath renovation stories--just to compare your experience with mine.

A
Alistair Boyer · June 10, 2023

Is the kitchen far away from the bathroom? We could have more pie or kitchen gadget reviews! 😉 Hope the bathroom is good and look forward to seeing more on the other side!

Just looking at the New 2022/2023 Sound Burger Review I wondered if there was a production date sticker on the one you received yesterday? The limited edition one was August 2022 with a code 22-08 35. I also looked at the 1983 retail price adjusted for inflation and the result is £301.

T
Techmoan · June 10, 2023

It’s 23-04 16

S
Simon Arnold · June 10, 2023

Thanks for the video heads-up. I was thinking what will I connect it to for playback, being a plank by temporarily forgetting the Sony micro system I bought following your video from about eighteen months ago. For other people's info I used a Halifax clarity credit card which I can use for fee free foreign currency transactions and the total was £170.53. it's important to make sure the currency selected on Japanese Amazon is in yen, same goes for a foreign currency transaction from any other country i.e. pay in the native currency.

B
Brad Jones · June 11, 2023

Oh. I paid with my Barclays debit card and selected GBP as I assumed that's what you were supposed to do. It all seems to be ordered OK.

G
Guy Mendes · June 10, 2023

Now that you mentioned, I'm curious why you dropped the promise of releasing videos sporadically when they're done instead of going back to the weekly format? I'm guessing the frustration of losing tons of potentially interesting videos because old tech didn't want to work didn't help matters (though you always find a way to work around it, considering how common things not working out has become).

T
Techmoan · June 10, 2023

I am releasing less videos now - the ad revenue has dropped by about a fifth as a result.

P
Phil Collins · June 10, 2023

I want to see “The SoundBurger Guy” on a T-Shirt.

C
Craig Lemon · June 10, 2023

D'ohhhh! Too late! I've already pre-ordered one from one of the Audio-Technica dealers here in Melbourne. Pricey though - AUD$429. That's about GBP£230. 😮 At least all three colours were available. ⚫🤍🟡

Amazon JP is a revelation. I started using it ages ago, to get a hold of HD episodes of "Columbo" on Blu-ray (unavailable in the US).

R
Raul Ramos · June 10, 2023

Been considering the 60 DVD pack for a while. so long un fact that it got mighty expensive again

F
Funkmon · June 10, 2023

Classic animal tech. Even when it works it never lives up to the potential. Suggestion for a lounge video that might be interesting but probably not. Compare all your denoising tech. Dolby B C S, DBX, DNR (do you have a DNR deck?), and the vinyl ones too! Type 1, 2, and 4 tapes... That probably wouldn't be an algorithm hit, but it might be fun and easy, and might have a long tail on people searching about Dolby noise reduction. You know what, don't listen to me. You listen to me your channel will go in the hole for sure. But maybe a Patreon stereo console update you could knock out in one go.

T
Techmoan · June 10, 2023

I have been collecting noise reduction systems over the years with the intention of trying some comparisons, so something along those lines might happen at some point.

M

There was one time about ten years ago I ran an order on Amazon Japan. Got weirded out that the only available shipping option was ¥4000 or so.. The shipment arrived the same calendar day to Canada as it was shipped which was the release day of one of the CDs in it.... :P Was a book and a couple CDs type of thing.. Was crazy and yeah was worth the shipping price to experience something so fascinating that it could actually arrive that damn quickly :P

Just Another Excellent Video. The Sound Burger, in whatever color, is cool.

O
OzRetrocomp · June 9, 2023

What I love is that with the state of current year YouTube, you could've just contacted Audio Technica and given them the old "do you know who I am?" and achieved the same result for free. Yet not only did you choose not to, you shared a valuable life hack with your patrons and potentially the rest of your audience, assuming us patrons haven't hoovered up all of Amazon Japan's stock prior to this video going public. Thanks Mat, you absolute legend. EDIT: For those playing along at home, looks like Aussies can get the yellow Sound Burger for around $300 dollarydoos, as opposed to the $400 being asked locally prior to selling out. I don't *need* a Sound Burger, but this is very tempting...

T
Techmoan · June 9, 2023

It’s just for Patrons this one - as close as I can get to a perk.

E
Explosive Action · June 9, 2023

Big fan of Amazon.jp over here in Australia, though I've only used it to pick up DVDs (and even VHS from third party sellers) - they have some amazing artwork on their cases, and often its the only country where you can buy the film at all!

B
Buckaroo Bunny Slippers · June 9, 2023

For anyone interested, here in Canada, the Black one is still in stock on the Audio-Technica site: https://www.audio-technica.com/en-ca/at-sb727. I guess I'm not the only one who wants the yellow or white one! Glad you got one Matt! Though it should have been free. We no doubt owe these reissues in no small part to you!

J

Thanks for the tip Mat! Just ordered one… came to about $193 total - includes the shipping to the U.S. and I’ll be seeing it around June 23. The shipping was about $20.

A

B
Bill Smartt · June 9, 2023

I certainly do LOVE my limited edition sound burger (that I got thanks to your post about it last year) and highly recommend folks grab one of these. Love the yellow! Looks like it's about $202 with shipping costs to the US. Not sure if there are any import duties, but Amazon Japan apparently calculates it during checkout. Thanks for the quick update on this!

L
Lycan Witch · June 9, 2023

that’s the best thing about the us versus the uk.. never any import duties for small consumer products. Only time duties seem to exist is for steeply expensive items or items that aren’t delivered through the mail or parcel services.

D
Duncan · June 9, 2023

The box of the yellow one is far closer to the original, with the same font and pictures, than the limited edition one. I'll stick with my yellow original one for now though.

D
David Roberts · June 9, 2023

Really, Matt... a sexual innuendo? But seriously, thanks the trick of Amazon.jp. I signed up, and actually saw the Soundburger, as of now. I'm not into records, but might get it for my daughter. Thanks. (Follow-up: I just ordered it. It's about the same price as yours, and it will arrive around 06-23). My daughter will be happy.

F

Hey it's me, your daughter. :3. Yes can you send it to my PO Box? Haha

G
Grace Robbins · June 9, 2023

You're clever - it never crossed my mind to try to order anything from Amazon Japan. I don't know why I supposed they can't take domestic-issued debit cards like any other worldwide website. I won't be buying a second SB, but I need to keep in mind for other things. Don't ever doubt that your Patreon group here was a large portion of the SB limited sales. We sold them clean out before they even started fulfilling orders in the U.S. I loved the live 'oh yeah' peel. 😃 Makes me smile a lot. I'll worry about your welfare if you don't ping a comment every now and again - yeah, I know I am such a silly worry-wart. 😑 Enjoy your worker-minder week, seems like a really dull thing to contend with. 🤍

4000 new orders on Amazon Japan by the end of the day? :)

N
Nuts 'n' Proud · June 9, 2023

Mat, I got an absolute result a few weeks ago. I went to a house clearance sale and got an original sound burger in the box for 10€. He wanted more I said does it work he was not sure so I haggled. When home I discovered it had very low hours on it. The stylus is perfect. I now take it to the Monday market. There is a vinyl seller and he lets me play the records before I part with them. This week I went home with 70 French 45 singles for 0,50€ each. Two duds I can't complain!

T
Taras Young · June 9, 2023

I've used Amazon JP multiple times and they've always come through, and no problems with DHL. In fact, I just received a big pack of 100GB BD-R MDISCs which were about 25% cheaper than ordering here. Looking forward to a crushingly boring weekend backing up all my MP3s such that they can still be accessed in 200 years' time.
