Sorry Mat, I’m a bit late to the party (to comment!), but I’m curious to know - what camera/s (still and/or movie) would you consider taking with you on a holiday? 📷
Next holiday I’m taking the Ricoh GR III for stills - although I’m shooting in the Vivid mode this time. The last holiday pics looked a bit drab and I’m not someone who can be bothered with manipulating them. I get it to shoot RAW+JPEG, so I’ve always got the originals if I need them. It’s just so easy to use for snapshots. I may use the phone if there’s nothing else in my pocket - and I think I’ll use this one for regular 4K video if I decide to take any clips this time. I’m also going to take the DJI Action 2 to hang around my neck and get some first person perspectives of the towns and shops I visit. I’ve also got a Sony DSC-HX99 just fo the zoom capabilities - mostly to use when shooting from the balcony of a cruise ship, whether in 4K30 or for the occasional photo.
I foresee a robotic lawn mower review in your future. Your grass situation seems ideal for it. There are tons available now, but admittedly, prices are at investment levels. Imagine your grass being mowed weekly and some AI choosing to kill or save the frogs on your behalf.
I did (briefly) look into them - but apparently they dislike steep inclines more than I do.
Is it crazy that we all enjoy the crazy things that you think we're tired of, like noodle reviews. In the US, we have Cup Noodles in 3 flavors, Chicken, Beef, & Shrimp. So everything you've eaten has been super entertaining and "culturally relevant"
I’ve tried the US ones - and I sympathise
“I’m going to eat it but I’m not proud of myself” 🤣😝 Classic Matt!!
Ha, I bought the donor kebab flavour one that other day too as it sounded so ridiculous, I had to give it a try. Your response has actually elevated my expectations for it, lol! I know the bulk of the video was about cameras, and I'm commenting on the pot noodle, but unfortunately the camera bit went pretty much over my head, whereas I have first hand experience of terrible noodle products!
Just got done mowing mom's yard... couple of photos. https://ibb.co/vZMH2Vc https://ibb.co/wKjRFxC I use a GreenWorks corded mower, and it's so much better than gas mowers. I never had good success starting gas mowers - I got so tired trying to pull-start them that I wasn't in the mood to mow by the time it started. I'd love to use that vacumower, but... it's not going to cut it. 😉
That looks like a nightmare to mow!
Your new lawnmower represents one-third of the trifecta of Lazy 1950s-1960s Vision Of The 21st Century: ☐ Powered by atomic energy ☐ Involves a laser beam ☑ Looks almost exactly like its 1950s-1960s counterpart, but it's half the size
No chance of that mower getting through our jungle of a garden 😂😅 fun to see you trying out different gadgets though! Wonder if there's any cat-related gadgets you could test out, like those self cleaning litter trays!
You spoke of how things tasted......how is your sense of taste these days? i recall you saying that your have no sense of smell and taste was effected......
Unfortunately there’s been no change. I’m still dealing with the tongue based categorisation system mentioned in the January update https://youtu.be/Wc-fvpl-chA?t=1702 - but the flavour of things hasn’t returned for perhaps a decade or so.
Mat, you call that a lawn mower!? My hoover has more horsepower than that puny thing and the carpets in my house have more square footage than your entire garden--Ha! In yer face ya furriner!!😁 And get a gas-powered mower mate, like a real red-blooded 'Merican Man! More on the serious side, I'd like to get a battery-electric push mower for my home, but the one I'd like (with the odd name of Ego) costs $1000.00. I think I'll keep my old gasoline mower until it dies. Most importantly. With that slope down to your house in the back garden, and all the rainfall you get there in your sceptered isle, don't you have a real problem with water infiltration (rising damp?) in your house?
No there’s no issues - the whole estate is on the side of a valley and back in the early 70s when it was built, there were still a few construction companies that weren’t fly-by-night cowboys - so the houses were made to last. They might be ugly and small, but they aren’t going anywhere.
Just watched it all and found it fascinating, particularly the cameras bit (I am a member of the 'Dull Mens Club' on FB!). . I tend to watch your posted videos on the main TV, whilst having breakfast. Have done for a few years now. Can't watch these Patreon ones on that. Is there any way I can?
Yes, start watching the video here for a few seconds then stop playing it. On YouTube on any of your other devices go into your history and you can continue playing the video.
Your sense was right - the end bit was slow, boring, and rubbish ... BUT ... *you* like talking about cameras and while this bit didn't resonate with *me*, I bet it did for a bunch of others. I am here because you like talking about things you like or at least find interesting but our likes/interests can't possibly overlap 100% ... so I will settle for 99.999%. :-) I'd wish you a happy long weekend but we only get that here on part of the left side of the Atlantic ...
Why did you throw away your Giro? https://youtu.be/z674JiB7OVc
As a camera nerd myself, found that bit very interesting. Just tells us more about the efforts you put in to give us quality stuff to watch.
Hi Matt, have you tried Soba noodles? I'm quite a fan of the Chilli flavoured one. 😁
I have - in fact I shot a segment with them not too long ago. I'm not sure if I binned it or not, but they aren't really my bag.
Thank you, I was one of the people asking about your cameras. Interesting to see how you put them all together. The wide presenter shot one looks very nice with the slight out of focus over your shoulder. Look forward to seeing how you use the actioncam to mix it up a bit.
Oh, the kitty! What a cutie pie!
In the 1970s (!) Toro made an electric lawn mower that would put your new one to shame in terms of its mowing performance in tall grass and battery life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul_pfPHB1RM
In the 1970s my Father had a cylinder mower that used a car battery. It might even have been self propelled.
Pot noodles I had one on holiday age 12 saw in shop bought it and went to a cafe and paid for hot water and a plastic fork. A treat. I enjoyed the cameras.
Thank you for the detailed look at your videography setup, very interesting. You mentioned in a prior reply to one of my comments how difficult you’d found the whole process, and I didn’t realise before how much effort has to go into these things. I was wondering about your filming schedule, out of curiosity; do you allocate yourself a weekly day off every week or do you just give yourself time off when there isn’t something that needs filming? Thanks again for the video.
I don’t have any kind of schedule planned. I work for as long as something takes to get finished then when I’m feeling up to it I’ll start on the next one. Breaks in working happen often though as I have a lot of time when I’m not feeling up to doing anything. If my mind isn’t in the right place due to tiredness then I’ve learned it’s best I don’t try to power through.
I think you can't beat a good old hand-push cylinder mower - takes half the time of anything else, the ultimate in cordless and recharged in 5 mins with a cup of tea. Probably wouldn't work too well on your lawn though!
I know the catalogue number of all my vinyl records but don't remember what I did this morning. My mother has one of those battery mowers. She had the cut out trouble too until she pushed it very slowly and it was fine after. Give it a week the worms will get the cuttings for you. I hope that helps.
I was eating a Sticky Rib (flavour) Pot Noodle while watching this. It's true. Pot Noodles are 61% carbs, 9% protein and 30% self-loathing. They're manufacturing has been perfected over the last 45 year to hit all the taste points of the UK snack buying public. I try not to be snobbish about them - as a retail worker of 25 years, I know how well they sell. Most people eat Pot Noodles (or their discount equivalent) - they just don't talk about it.
The lawnmower and the noodles are enjoyable digressions. Thank you for showing the cat, I'm sure I'm not the only one appreciating it ;-)
You got me thinking about the Aiwa mini Hifi - maybe an option is using an oscilloscope (if you have one) to trace the signal path. The pin out is readily available for the Dolby chip, and if it is genuinely the issue, you should be able to see the signal going in to the chip, but then nothing coming out on the pin relating to the channel that’s snookered. That will then prove beyond doubt that changing the Dolby chip will fix it. 👍
I’m not skilled enough to understand how to do that kind of trouble shooting.

I best resist - I think pretty much everyone is sick of this diversion now.
Good stuff Matt, and nice little guest appearance by The Bee’s Knees :) Love his personality.
I'm loving that lawn hoover. I struggle to mow the lawn due to various health issues and that thing seems small and light enough to help me out. I might even enjoy it......probably not. :)
G-Tech still send me leaflets after I bought a vacuum for my gran about 10 years ago so I saw the mower, I'll admit I laughed at it when I first saw it. Good to see it's actually useful, clearly keeping the weight down is key. We have tiny gardens here and people still use petrol mowers, I don't get it.
I had a bit of a laugh over gyro. Just for reference, in the US the proper pronunciation is like year-oh (the g is basically silent).
I forgot - I did know once, but I think the memory got swapped out with an irrelevant product number that I'll never need again.
More Cat and repairs please. Entertaining as always. Thank you.
Perfect timing 😀 • Your lawn mowing was recorded nicely via stereo mic and camera with fish-eye lens, not bad at all. You say DJI Action 2? • It's heartwarming that you're very careful of the various lawn critters; even if only to avoid a fleshy mess. • Handy little lawn care device. I had the same thought of "lawn vacuum" when you showed it to us before using it. My guess is that you don't have much lawn to mow in front of the home. Each week I have to push-mow my mom's small fenced lawn that has a 100+ year-old tree in the middle; and I trip over demonic monstrous tree roots and contend with bodily bruises. • Bee's Knees: "Respond to my needs immediately, kind human." • I like that RX0-II, dare I say the tiny camera is cute? The overhead angle, I really like it. There's not much I can comment about cameras - everything I know about them I learn from you. • I enjoy seeing your noodle meals. My doc said I need to go on a low carb/no sugar diet because I'm "pre-diabetic" and clearly need to lose weight. I miss pasta/noodles already. • My paradigm - it could perhaps be wrong - it wasn't Japan or China copying anyone - it was the US copying Britain... when it came to documentary television, anyway, not food. Example: PBS programs, namely 'Nova' - some of the episodes we just re-dubbed by replacing the English narrator with an American narrator. I didn't know about this until the internet, when I saw the same documentary done originally by the BBC. Your videos are nowhere near dull to me. They are very relatable. I always particularly enjoy your updates. Take care 🤍
I liked the stereo too - it was the DJI Action 2. It does do some weird things with the sound though from time to time - you'll have spotted it in the kitchen and the conservatory, the audio shifts position and it feels a bit like your ears have popped. It's still good enough to use without a mic though which very much appeals when I just want to shoot something quickly with the minimum of fuss. As for weight loss, I'm no expert (as is obvious) my only tip is to swap crisps/chips for nuts.
re: using the ZV-1 - Have you looked into using the HDMI Out on the camera to connect it to your monitor in front of you so you have a better view of what you're recording?
The screen is folded out of the way when I’m recording.
It's 12:39am here and I want some instant noodles now.
Now I'm imagining what a dust-bin could be scheming about ;-)
Have you considered using digital time compression to longer videos? I'v found that most people are quite comfortable with 10% time compression. I usually watch most movies that way. Shaves 3 minutes off a 30 minute video. Removing verbal pauses can save more time.
If you take the errs out of this there would be nothing left. However the unwritten agreement here is that this is just an extra video - not a polished one.
0:58 seconds, I was surprised by the impromptu dance party.
Old man makes what felt like an obvious ‘joke’. Quickly realises he was the only one laughing. Comes to the conclusion that he’s even more out of touch than he thought he was.
Super to have another Odd-cast to watch.
Outstanding, I really enjoy these.
