Mat’s Tat 3
A hastily assembled video.
Unfortunately for one reason and another I’ve had limited time to assemble a new video this week.
Please take this into consideration if you do choose to watch the video.
Recent online hostility has discouraged me from starting on another project this week. Every new light-entertainment video I upload somehow ends up poking a hornets nest. I figured that no video, should mean no hassle and I could really do with no hassle right now.
I’ll be using the time instead to do some much needed tidying up.
Take care.

I love the Mat's Tat videos, I actually save them for when I'm not sure what I want to watch, as I never know (and could probably never guess) what the "tat" therein will be, I like the surprise, it's like an adult version of a Kinder Egg! Ignore the tw@ts on the internet, life's too short.
Skip this content? This is what I'm subscribing for! I mean honestly, I've seen some very interesting novelty items in these videos.
I just now watched this. If the led has three wires, you could hook a cheap wled controller to it
So sorry to hear this, unfortunately it seems to be the norm with anything online these days. My theory is that the internet has given all the idiots (including myself) have been given a voice, where they would usually be ignored in polite society in the past… actually not that radical or much of theory really, see what I mean 😂
Take whatever time you need, Mat. We'll be here when you're ready. Don't let the bastards get you down.
I think I would print a label on my own Maxell XLll-S
I don't know if this will be of any use to you but it's worth knowing, just in case. https://youtu.be/2dzqQItDmdg
That cloud is one of the greatest fails coming out of China. Love a bit of tat!
I have been a fan ever since you made that casette carousel (not sure i spelled that correctly) video and enjoyed pretty much every video since then. And i dont get why people have to hate on a guy that just want to educate and entertain others and does it really well. Just wanted to say haters be dammed and keep up the good work Mat.
There just seems to be an anger and sickness in society these days. I'm sure it's not healthy, but I've been trying to just not participate in "society" at all anymore. Anyway, I rewatched your Tefifon videos today. I forgot how crazy that format was.
Tefifon is peak Techmoan. It's the format that keeps on giving! I reckon you can tell a Techmoan fan by whether or not they've heard of Tefifon.
the bleach did exactly what it said on the bottle
You are YouTube gold. End.
Matt, your videos are a like rare but very welcome oasis in a desert of other productions which really don't speak to me. There will always be haters, I just hope you will never throw the towel because of them, although I can somewhat imagine it's though.
Why are you often downplaying your content? :-) What you deliver is superb - been watching your videos ever since "What in the world is the Gakken world eye?" :-)
I watch all your videos without question. It’s absurd people have to pass judgement on something you have chosen to click on, I mean you don’t have to watch it. Keep going you will always have an audience. I liked all the “tat” with exception to the cloud, I would definitely put that in the tat category 😄
You emphasised that this video isn't worth watching, but I enjoyed it a lot! These quirky devices are just as interesting. And for the record, I really liked the big cassette, though overpriced, but it fits well with your channel.
"I'm not just doing that because I'm weird . . . " Since you didn't ask . . . as a (long) established creator I'm guessing your philosophy on YT comments is a bit different to anyone actively trying to grow their channels but it sounds like time and experience hasn't made negative noise any easier. And without knowing the mechanics of how the comments reach you/what your review process is, it's difficult to know whether that is a contributing factor. It's likely doubly problematic for solo creators who don't have anyone else with whom they can share the cognitive comment load. Whatever; it's always disappointing and frankly sad to hear about some of the trash you have to put up with. To add to the pile of ill-informed, unsolicited helpfulness that invariably comes your way, it might be worth investigating whether AI (yeah, yeah, I know...) can help. Prompt it to crawl the comment section and categorise/highlight stuff based on sentiment and pull out anything that's actually helpful or insightful - and if you tune it right it will automatically filter out bot-type stuff, mean spirited or thematic brigading. Regardless, those who know always look forward to your infectious positivity and bubbly personality in each new instalment ;-)
Love you videos. Thank you Mat.
Feel free to take a month off. You can also publish the videos with comments disabled. We will comment on patreon instead. Or consider the comments to be "engagement" and never ever look at them. You can ask your patreons to wade through the crap and extract the couple of insightful comments and forward those to you.
I like that Techmoan buys all the tat so we don't have to! 😆
You can make simple devices work with your “exciting” power bank by double-clicking the button on the power bank. This forces it to output power all the time. You’ll see a green dot on the screen when it’s in this mode.
That's a fine video, Mat :) That fiber optic lamp is quite beautiful in a low-light environment, but the fact that it causes splinters like that would terrify me. It does, however, remind me of a fiber optic lamp that my grandmother had: a clear plastic box about the size of a shoe box stood on end, and a sort of plastic orchid inside. When it was on, you could see the edges of all the leaves and blossoms were slowly illuminated by a color wheel, a bit like yours must have inside. And as they sometimes do, the memory of that old thing is causing a little pang of nostalgia in this old me.
There are a couple on ebay uk for £40 each at the moment. However, the mains adaptor is moulded into a U.K. plug. IMHO it is the colour wheels that make these lamps so pretty. Colour changing LEDs don't have the same effect. I have a Fibre Optic Christmas Tree which uses a wheel striped like a Zebra giving moving twinkles spread all over the tree.
I thought the oversized cassette looked OK, though maybe it would look at its best with static RGB lighting. It occupies a similar amount of screen area to the other cassette thing in the top left of the display.
Mat, I have learned throughout life you can't waste time trying to cater to everyone. Your tenure on YouTube has sparked curiosity in technology for millions-including myself. Just ignore the haters out there and keep up with your over the top content.
Actually a great video, Mat. And you gave me a massive flashback to when I was 4 or 5, so 48-ish years ago. My grandma used to live in Bournemouth, and she had that *exact* same fibre optic lamp. I used to love it.
That fibre optic lamp takes me back! Over here they were called fantasia lamps. Note that I'm not one of those twats who goes all "well ackshually" in the YouTube comments section, because I know it's possible for a device to be known under different names in various parts of the world. It also sounds like there are more than enough muppets stinking up your YouTube comments as it is.
Geez. Keyboard heroes. Still love all the videos - as do many more - also about stuff that is not up my alley :D
A great video as ever, what ever you think of it. The Fibre lamp was a proper throwback, not seem one of those for decades.
I’m a big kid when it comes to infinity mirrors. As soon as Christmas comes round and I take my mum or girlfriend to a garden centre (livin’ the dream 😂) I normally go to the Christmas tat lighting section to get my yearly fix 😂😁
The fiber optic lamp was my favorite but you are right, wouldn't be right for the shelf. I also noticed how strong your voice sounded. Reminded me of the old days :)
Angry at a Techmoan video? No way!
Love from Seattle, mate. Your videos are always one of the best parts of this guy's week. Haters can suck it.
The cloud lamp is really weird, I had no idea such a thing existed. The snowflake looks incredibly well constructed, and still in perfect condition. They don't make 'em like they used to, etc. It sounds like this has been a stressful week Mat, so I hope things settle down soon. This was another great video; I found myself nodding in agreement all the way through.
The giant cassette is charming, while that fibre optic lamp is simply stunning. I've never seen one in person, but just on camera it's incredible. It is the centre of attention, and it knows it. Sorry to learn of the recent animus against Mat, particularly over the use of ChatGPT. I get the anti-AI sentiment, but that anger towards Mat of all people is uncalled for. He may be "Techmoan" but he is not a technophobe. He is using AI as a tool amongst all his other tools. I wonder how many of those who detest any use of AI by YouTubers would measure up to their own haughty standards if given both the opportunity and pressure to run their own channel for a living.
I still enjoy your vids. I've never seen one that I wish I hadn't seem 😁
My most watched channel, and the only one I'm currently a Patron of, so you're doing something right as far as I'm concerned! Primark in Brighton in the 80s had stairs with a mirrored wall each side. I used to ask to visit specially just for that! Working my way through the Morecambe and Wise boxset at the moment, so the "Rubbish!" comment made me laugh. *cough* "ARSENAL!"
Maybe it's just me, but I really enjoyed this! Fibre lamp was my favourite, super effect.
OK, so tells us who these nitwits were and we'll get up a posse and fix them. People suck. I know you don't care to hear this but WE LIKE EVERYTHING YOU PUBLISH. Yes, we like some more than others but we LIKE IT ALL.
Sorry to hear about idiot comments on You Tube. I enjoyed this video. I agree the fibre optic lamp looks very impressive and I think the LED cassette works well on the shelf.
It's a real pity the optic fibre lamps was not suitable - I liked that the most. If my tat was as un-tatty as yours - I'd be very pleased.
I like these Matt's tat videos, bit of a luckly dip sort of video.
You should see how many people hated my take on MSX. Bloody hell, it's just a video.
I enjoyed the MSX video. I knew very little about MSX despite being of a similar age and seeing them in shops.
I love your video's Mat, every time I get a notification one is available, it lightens my day. Never give up. There's too much love for your channel.
I really like these cheese sandwich type videos
What's the controversy this time? Have you been soldering again, Mat?
You spent too much time saying it was going to be rubbish. Don't be so self-deprecating. Tell 'em once and get on with it. It was fine! 👍🏻
• I don't want to resort to trash talk against these comment fools, however... I'll have to clean some clocks if people continue to get their capstans in a kink. I don't want to have to replace some caps. Do I have to pinch rollers? • I like all of the tat, especially the cassette and the fiber optic lamp. • As for the wave machine, it's now suitable for a Crystal Pepsi advertisement. Take care 🤍
I love Matt's tats with or without production value. When I first saw Matt's Tats 1, I thought to myself, there's no way Matt is a tattoo kind of guy? Dumb American.....also, I would say keep the cassette!
My vote is for the cassette as a keeper. Last Christmas we got a light-up star, which to my horror needed to use batteries rather than plug into the string of lights. I was quite annoyed at that. On a whim I looked on Amazon for a battery-to USB solution, and was happy to see that it exists. This isn't a rechargeable battery thing, it just a AA or AAA sized battery shell with the right voltage conversion to provide power. There is a thin cable that sneaks its way out of the closed battery compartment, where I can then plug the USB into an old phone charger brick. To make this long story short (too late) it might be a solution for other junk to try that is technically only battery powered...
Maybe it's worth considering turning off YouTube comments entirely in lieu of discussion on this side?
Don't think you can do that without denting traffic as more comments increases the appearance of the videos on people's timelines (I think)
Many times, I really like the hardware of these "tats", but the SW (and the crappy remote that comes with it) usually does not offer what I want... I started making my own controllers using Arduinos... About the fungi: in the biology labs where I worked, we indeed used "bleach" (better said: hypochlorite) to kill them off, as the spores could even resist 70% ethanol (that kills of everything else). I had to laugh when you showed that it litterally bleached the blue colour... I hear lately a lot about hostility on YouTube, seems to be a more general problem, I hope it won't discourage you too much to continue making such great content!
"Recent online hostility" be damned. We enjoy your self deprecating videos. Keep them coming.
the bots online are just nasty now? i dont get it.. 08:59 'sound effect' really made me laugh, and i really needed it.
"A rushed load of nonsense." Cut me off a big slice of that!
Using this as my opportunity to say goodbye. Loved your content, however your community here stinks high heaven.
All I can say about the hostility towards you is just simply "Flippin 'eck"
I stand with you Mat and I have not even seen the video yet. I appreciate your content, your delivery and most of all your point of view. I agree with the sentiments below, don't let the haters win. Of course it is easy for me to say that since they are not giving me trouble. So all I can say is I support you and would be willing to support you if you went to a pay platform like Nebula.
I think some of those YouTube commenters are drinking the wave machine juice.
Anyone having a go at you, Mat, is crackers, mate.
Just my opinion but I do like the cassette. It feels it fits in and looks nice. The others seem rather non interesting and misplaced. Does not fit the theme and look like random tat. But yeah, I vote for the cassette to stay. The fiber optic lamp does look amazing. I might have to hunt one now.
I watched this and thoroughly enjoyed it. That fibre optic lamp is just sublime! Beautiful. Regards
I don't need to keep suggesting Mat buys one now. I bought my Crestworth Phantom Lite new in the early 90s for about £80. Each evening I would drive past a lighting shop who had it in the window. When I got given some money for my birthday I knew what to buy. More recently I bought one of the noughties "UFO" lights out of curiosity. While the build is "cheap and nasty" I was surprised how good it looks running.
These gadgets never have less sensitive sound reaction... unless you like a strobe effect. I have a bunch of lightbulbs and led strips with these cheap remotes.. velcro them to a block of wood and labelled them. Sounds odd, but it's better than having Google home listening to me 24/7 lol
I mirror all the above, ignore the dicks they’re not worth your time or consideration Mat!!
The hornets are the vocal mean-spirited minority. Sending you encouragement to ignore them (easy for me to say, I know). There are a lot more happy bees and butterflies out there that delight in the content you create for us to enjoy. 🥰
Ha! I never said the bleach would get rid of the floaters, it would only have stopped them growing in the 1st place. Once they are there, nothing will get rid of them. It's amazing that it bleached the blue colouring! I would never have put money on that.
Thanks Mat, this was great. When you said you put 2 drops of bleach in the wave lamp, even before you lifted it into frame, I thought to myself "I bet it took the blue away..." then I laughed when you brought it up, just perfect. Thanks for the chuckle...and I kind of want one of those cloud lamps...
Few belly laughs in this for me, Mat. Nice one. Also the fibre optic filaments in that vintage lamp look so much more delicate and enchanting than the newer ones. Magic.
Indisputable fact: Your most rubbish-ist video is better than 95% of all other YouTube videos. It's a gift... and by that I mean it's a gift for us to enjoy your talent. Nuff said.
For every no-talent idiot throwing a tomato there are many more dedicated fans throwing money. The ratio is the message, Mat. That, and knowing half of everyone has below average intelligence should make your day :) A video epistle from you always makes mine!
I think the giant cassette could look nice if you stick the LED strip where its should be. Perhaps placed near the orange phone and set the lights to a simple changing color mode it might work out?
It seems some people have nothing better to do than be abusive to others. There is so much hate online. Your videos always bring me joy, and I'm very grateful for them.
This video definitely lived up to the hype Mat gave it during the opening segment!😉 Actually, it's still interesting to watch the Mat's Tat videos, even if some of these novelty items are rather mundane, although that fiber-optic lamp was pretty nice and would be a neat addition to the 'trophy' backdrop if it would fit on the shelf.
With a bit of editing and the appropriate music, the section with the infinity mirror would be perfect for your Doctor Who title sequence. If it ever comes back, they will need a new Doctor, so get in there early.
Ignore the haters!! My husband and I always enjoy spending time with you...we joke that if we ever visited the UK, we'd make a beeline to your door to express our appreciation. Your wit, expertise and amazing persistence make your channel one of the best on YouTube....
Well said!
I was scratching my head trying to figure out what hornet's nest you had kicked. I assume it's the fact you used ChatGPT to compare recordings, which frankly is a rather petty reason for complaint. Techmoan is the antithesis of AI/LLM, given it's a real bloke demonstrating real (mostly) analogue tech, the kind of stuff you just can't see anywhere else. I couldn't care less if you asked an LLM for an opinion, it was one of my favourite of your videos for a good while. You ought not to worry about the 1% when 99% greatly enjoy this rare jewel of a channel in a sea of AI slop.
AI Derangement Syndrome is real.
Whats wrong with people! Im really sorry to hear that. You look after yourself. If its any consolation, I really enjoy your videos and really appreciate the work you put in. Thankyou!
RUBBISH! 🤣
This video what he wrote.
Here's a thing about kicking the hornets nest. In the UK you folks have not been hit hard by the AI LLM industry as much as the USA. Here it is an incredibly controversial topic, where many marginalized communities are being taken advantage of, utilities are at all time high rates, drought struck areas are worse than ever, and the companies pushing LLMs into everything are making a profit at our detriment. Again, I was as polite as I could be in demonstration of the tool you already had at your disposal to look at the EQ of your recordings. I'm far more polite than most on the Internet when it comes to LLM usage. I am still disappointed, but I was hoping that you would have heard my prior concerns before your video went public. Now that the UK has drunk the AI Kool aid as well, maybe folks there will start to understand why Americans despise it so much. Best wishes.
Loving it! Peak techmoan energy and humour. Thanks Mat 😂
Disable comments in YouTube? David Willis / Dumbing Of Age comic has/had a trick that disables comments for the first hours and that got rid of a lot of the nonsense!
That would definitely be worth a try!
I hope it never gets so bad that you say "enough" Your videos are always a joy to watch, even if it is about something that I would normally not be into. I'm sure we here on this site will support you, always. Thanks for all you do (and publicly, thank you for taking my railway based tapes and telling a story of phones and the railway)
I’ve still got a lot of stuff stored up that I’d like to feature but, well, I don’t know.
Screw the hornets and their nest and their stripey yellow arses. Every Techmoan upload notification makes my day instantly better and no insect will change that. EDIT: "you might want to skip this video"?! Shirley you must be joking...
100% agree! It's all part of my weekend routine now. Even as a patreon I still save them to watch over my Saturday bacon sarnie breakfast.
Sorry to hear Mat. Please be sure there are a lot of People, like me, who just enjoy watching your video's!
Who gets angry at a Techmoan video? Bonkers.
I'd love to see the kinds of YouTube videos these bozos make, though I suspect I'll be waiting a while.
I don’t understand all this online toxicity - ffs let the man do what he enjoys, and what we love watching
It seems free of charge is too expensive for some mingebags. I'll never even try to understand such people.
