The LG StanbyME 2 is not just annoying to type (UPDATED)

As promised here’s another video, this time with more of a Patron exclusive window than the Bumpboxx video. It's a review of the LG StanbyME TV - you might recall me mentioning this once in an oddcast. Regrets, I've had a few...

https://youtu.be/2n28a0xYcZk

I haven’t got anything to add this time.  Instead I need to move straight on to making the next video in the morning. But first I'll have to take some giant cardboard boxes to the tip to free up space.

So that’s it for this time, take care and have a good one.

UPDATE 1: Swapped the video to improve clarity and remote a sticking point.

UPDATE 2: Re-uploaded with a couple of tiny tweaks to volume levels and edit points

I’m not sure if the WebOS version is the issue. My LG C3 is running WebOS 24 and my E9 is on a much older WebOS version and both have the 5 app.

I experienced an inexplicable joy from your construction montage. Beautifully edited. Cheers!

I’m glad because I liked the way that bit turned out too.

Matthew Hunt · May 16, 2026

Does GB News come pre-installed? 😅

T
Techmoan · May 16, 2026

Nope, and that recommendation you’re seeing at the top in the recommendations section is a recommendation that I wouldn’t click on in a billion years.

M
Martipar · May 16, 2026

I don't want to sound pushy or even patronising but have you forgotten to upload this to YouTube or is this for next week? Sorry if this sounds like a complaint, it really isn't.

T
Techmoan · May 16, 2026

You were right, I was in the office rewiring the backdrop and then the cat needed attention, so when I returned to the house I finally remembered what day of the week it was and set the video live. Then I saw your message, so thanks for the reminder, I think we both thought about it at exactly the same time.

Tore Børseth Bjørnsen · May 15, 2026

Just a short post to clarify. LG TVs do updates to new WebOS versions. Did an install of a QNED87T6B today. Initial software was 23.20.20 and that’s WebOS 24. It also says 24 in the «TV info» menu. After the update the TV was at version 33.31.25. Menu now shows WebOS 25. It will also receive updates up to 28.

Another lovely video. Got me thinking about a projector set up combined with a screen. A mobile screen can me tucked away for projector deployment.... Hospital TV fits the name. Not in our hospitals though. It would be chained to the wall with a payment system. As I started watching, I thought : wait a second. Is this a bullit style video of a TV? And it was a good thought

T
Techmoan · May 15, 2026

My swap over using from using a TV to a projector in the lounge is what prompted this purchase.

Chris · May 15, 2026

It's funny, my wife saw an ad for one of these recently and thought it would be nice for when she's in the bathtub. After looking at the price, I thought we'd be better off just buying a tv and a rolling stand, and it seems we arrived at the same conclusion. I did think the touchscreen was a cool feature, but hearing about its deficiencies is a bit of a bummer.

D
Duncan · May 18, 2026

I don't think a Touchscreen and Bathtub would go well together.

C
Chas Large · May 14, 2026

By Eck, when I were a lad in the TV trade, it too two lads and a Van to deliver a 26" TV, ow thing's a changed eh? Can you imagine summat like this with a CRT screen??? Nay.

D
Duncan · May 18, 2026

As discussed in the Youtube comments the castors would be far heavier duty, the stand would have four box section uprights, and only the Teacher would be allowed to move it.

C
Chris Horry · May 14, 2026

LG WebOS is one of the worst Smart TV platforms, and that's really saying something. I hated it a decade ago and it looks like nothing has changed.

M
Mike in Texas · May 14, 2026

I have no need for this...but curious...if you plug a laptop or computer into it...does the touchscreen operate the computer? ie are there drivers?

T
Techmoan · May 15, 2026

I really don’t know, can I give you the answer of ‘probably’.

D
Douglas Cummings · May 13, 2026

Wanna know what Mat's watching on Crunchyroll.

T
Techmoan · May 14, 2026

I’ve still never clicked on that one, it seems to be an automatic install. Is it anime?

M
Michel Konst · May 13, 2026

I love the intro, it is indeed Pointless. This is the kind of humour we've signed up to and are members for.

T
Techmoan · May 13, 2026

Now that’s a joke which I know will go unnoticed by the majority of the viewers, for understandable reasons.

A
Andrew Fletcher · May 13, 2026

Hey Mat, you were right about the finger marks on the screen, check out about 16 minutes in, the screen almost looks like a shool blackboard with faint chalk marks on it. That would constantly trigger my OCD. Great video about something i never knee existed but not for me. Keep up the great work, p.s. loved the Bom box review. Andrew.

T
Techmoan · May 13, 2026

I’m glad someone liked the Bumpboxx review, tell your friends too, because so far it doesn’t really appear to been worth all the time I spent on it.

A
Asaf Sagi · May 13, 2026

I just bought one for my dad's 70th birthday a couple of weeks ago, and he seems happy with it. Granted, we have different TV apps here and he doesn't care much about this or that feature. He takes it to the balcony and watches TV while he smokes. Good review, though.

A
Andy Ihnatko · May 13, 2026

A niche product for sure. But I could see something like this getting a lot of use in a large house, with way more places where people might want to watch TV or play a game. It's not worth installing a TV on the patio, or next to the big tub in the master bathroom, or in the guest bedroom that only gets used a half-dozen nights a year. But it'd be worth buying a TV that's trivially easy to move and set up from one place to another, whether it's going to a place that's near an outlet or not.

D
Drew Tavendale · May 13, 2026

Ugh. The incompatibility and inconsistency of apps in and across operating systems is a real bugbear of mine. I cringed in anticipation of you opening Netflix, having suffered the egregious, self-inflicted carnage Netflix recently unleashed on their Apple TV app (which already eschewed the many genuinely useful system-level features in favour of rolling their own app, but then decided even worse was the goal to aim for), only to be dismayed to see the Apple TV app here not work with this system's features. I think the word "flawed" still so clearly visible in finger grease at 16:17 sums it all up, really. Pity - the premium price I can forgive because it's simply not a mass market product and economies of scale aren't going to apply, but that it has less basic functionality than other models from the same brand (and, going by the responsiveness of your demo, a potato for a processor) I can't. Thank you for the video, though, of course (and well chosen to whoever picked the Lego flowers - I have the same ones and they make me smile.)

C
Chris · May 13, 2026

LG have said that the StanbyME 2 will get WebOS 25 at some point this year. No use to you now, but you should hopefully get more enjoyment out of it when the update drops.

M
Mark Hesse · May 12, 2026

Looks like a cool item, but in reality, not as cool as one might think. However, since my current desktop monitor has a line of dead pixels all the way across it, I am interested in that ASUS monitor (is it really pronounced like Jesus in Spanish?). Also, at 12:15 where Mat is fiddling with the TV, the rug in the lounge behind him looks like the shadow mask for a color CRT.🤔 Just one more thing: 'Stanby' sounds like the name of a town in the UK that dates back to the Viking occupation--but after a quick Google search, "computer says, no."

D
Drew Tavendale · May 13, 2026

It is pronounced like that (Ay-Soos), yes, though I always used to pronounce it "Ay-Suhs". (Most of the tech media pronounce it that way and they're likely taking their cues from the company, who definitely pronounce it that way in their presentations.)

B
Brad Jones · May 12, 2026

Double Techmoan treat for me tonight, as I've finally got the house to myself again to watch the Bumpboxx video, then this one straight after!

J
Jason Olshefsky · May 12, 2026

Oh, good. I'm always looking for a way to reinforce my joke that "LG stands for 'Like Garbage'." I find they're as closed as Sony, with the same mediocre user-interface designs but without the good engineering that Sony used to have.

J
Jonathan in London · May 12, 2026

Richer Sounds recommended an LG TV for my elderly mum. WebOS's heritage is Palm OS. Remember Palm?. It's a miserable experience. You're just lucky the StanbyME doesn't have an LG "magic remote". Unfortunately LG TVs are apparently very reliable so it will be a while before it deservedly becomes landfill.

T
Techmoan · May 12, 2026

Oddly some features only work with a Magic remote, so you have to buy one separately if you want to use these.

P
Paul Watkins · May 12, 2026

This looks like it could be aimed at or be a better bet for someone regularly doing presentations in an office, moving between rooms in a work environment or going out on the road. But then why wouldn't you just connect a laptop to a projector? It reminds me of having to carry round big suitcases of OHP slides in that regard as it's not the most portable thing even if LG have accessories such as cases/straps. Maybe it could be used in a doctor's waiting room - but even then it looks as if it could be easily pilfered or simply grabbed by it's stand and carried out the door.

G
Grace Robbins · May 12, 2026

It seems to be a modern take of schoolroom CRTs that were rolled in on industrial carts for educational video presentations. Well, that's what my antique brain thought anyway.

A
Andrew Torrance · May 12, 2026

It's spooky how so much of your YouTube feed, Mat, is similar to my own. It must be some kind of male mid-50s married with no children thing the algorithm has detected.

M
MrHammond · May 12, 2026

Mat showing again what not to buy, perfect! 😊

J
Jason’s Digital Attic · May 12, 2026

I don't understand the 5 app problem. I have a 2016 LG TV with Web OS 05.70.45. Not only is 5 on the LG Content Store, but it was updated on 20/03/2025 to Version 2.2.2. How can this be on a 2016 LG TV but not on a 2026 LG TV? Try again - search "5" in the LG Content Store.

T
Techmoan · May 12, 2026

Perhaps it’s because you’ve already downloaded it and if you bought this TV now BNIB you wouldn’t be able to download it…does it show in your App Store.

M
Matt Tester · May 12, 2026

As soon as I saw WebOS I knew the experience wasn't going to be great, I really like my LG OLED TV but also avoid the OS as much as possible. I would've been curious about this, so thanks for showing it.

T
Techmoan · May 12, 2026

I'm the same, was very happy with my OLED LG and the one before that and the other LG TV before that, but I've never until now tried to use the App Store.

G
Grace Robbins · May 12, 2026

• Don't you wish assembly was as fast as the time lapse? I love the music accompaniment. • Your lounge looks great - at least what I saw of it. The chairs and shelves are really nice. • It's absolutely ridiculous that you can't update the OS. 😡 • For whatever reason I've never gotten along with touch screens on laptops or monitors. If I have to type anything I just want a good ol' keyboard. • 11:50 - why did I cringe when you moved it in front of the kitchen door? 🤪 • The video seemed off - then I realized you didn't have a 'talk to camera' bit at the beginning and it's more of a voice-over video. I like your appearance at the end though. • I think I'm going to stick with the classics 😄: https://ebay.us/m/shvDS4 https://ebay.us/m/xuhgWJ Nice one. I agree, the magnetic remote is a nice touch. My LED floor lamps also came with magnetic remotes. Otherwise the remotes will end up in a drawer and it can't be discerned what device they belong to. It's interesting to see what's new with TVs these days. Have a great week and take care 🤍.

Amro · May 12, 2026

Thanks for the alternative suggestion. That size looks just right for someone in my tiny house and I don’t have room for a big tv so that would be ideal. It’s that’s the app situation isn’t brilliant because at first I thought “ why does he not like Web OS?” I quite like it on my LGTV because it’s not very it’s not very spy-y. If only Apple was a West Asian company - I think they might have a made a good effort. (But they don’t even make routers anymore). Thanks again for a super video.

M
Mike Knell · May 13, 2026

I fear you are using a different Web OS to me because every time my LG TV updates itself there are a bunch of "Yes means no and no means yes. Consent to data gathering y/n?" type dialogues to negotiate.

M
Matthew Lawrenson · May 12, 2026

If you displayed an oscilloscope pattern on it, you'd have Karen off Spongebob Squarepants.

M
Martijn Valk · May 12, 2026
