The 125 pound Record Weight
A video review (of sorts) of the HumminGuru Lumi.
https://youtu.be/NAUu5PzUEek
Oh I just want to mention something about the start of the video. The other week I noticed the stats on the previous video showed that about 50% of viewers had stopped watching in the first 30 seconds. This intrigued me. The idea of spending all that time effort and money making a video only for someone to give it the most cursory of glances and click away before it had really got going, amused me to no end. So I thought - right let’s see how many viewers I can get to bail when nothing is said for the first minute.
It turned out though that those YT stats were messed up and the actual percentage still watching after 30 seconds was around 75% which is pretty good really - but still it was the erroneous stat which prompted the intro. That and I thought it would be a bit ludicrous to go to all this trouble to play a record containing this audio. It’s a lighthearted ‘bit’, poking light fun at the whole overblown vinyl enthusiast thing…but I doubt many will get the joke.
Now last week I naively wrote the following.
I’ll attempt to catch up a little mid next week with a short video about a nonsense item that cost too much and does very little. I feel that it shouldn’t take very long to demonstrate.
Well this is that video and it turns out that I’m incapable of assembling a video in a hurry. I’m learning to live with this. I mentioned last month how despite my best efforts my pace has noticeably slowed down in recent times. But yes it’s not so great for producing lots of ‘content’ efficiently.
Anyway, since I haven’t managed to get ahead or even to catch up I’m going to leave it a week before this one goes out on youtube. It’ll be a Patreon exclusive until then,
I anticipate there will be a bit of a delay now before I have anything else new ready to show you as there are loads of annoying chores getting in the way over the next couple of weeks. I’ll try my best to get something done in-between them, but I’m not going to make any promises this time.
All the best, take care.
UPDATE: As requested I’ve added in a wow & flutter test and therefore swapped out the video. I think we all know the outcome- so no need for a rewatch but for the curious it starts at around 12:50.

I like the look of a nice chunky industrial weight, not this one though as I don’t like neon colours anywhere round my system. I’m a warm glow kinda guy 😁 But I can understand why someone will like this device though. Lee
Does the strobe light on the weight make those zoetrope records look like they're moving?
It sounds probable, but I haven’t tested it.
I wonder if a similar experience will be had with those fancy CD players, like the Sony XA20-ES and the like. I always laughed as CD is a digital medium, it will either read the disc or not, so likely these pucks are snake oil esq.
I was at a long dead consumer electronics show once where there were some booths dedicated to selling things like that. I highly annoyed them by just saying that my discman already locked the discs in place...
It's amazing how much absolute worthless crap is marketed to the "audiophile" market. Thanks for your hilarious reporting on this. Once again, you "take one for the team" by buying something that is pretty much useless, but end up making an excellent video that makes me (and many others) laugh.
They are benefical when there is a little warping and help the record sit a bit flatter
I've happily watched with nodding affirmation while you debunked many (obviously) useless audio enhancement products. The CD trimmer, the ion whateverer... That is... until today. I may continue to use my record weight, but I'll have to do so dispossessed of the notion that it is improving the reproduction of the recording. This one hit close to home. Thanks for keeping it real.
Disclosure: Fluance RT83 with acrylic platter upgrade. I never imagined the weight doing anything beyond adding additional mass, same as the acrylic platter, and therefore more stability. But if that were true why not make the platter even heavier? Then you wouldn't have the extra step. It was probably never about that. It makes you feel like you're doing something. Its IMPORTANT. Yeah?
Another 'tinned breakfast' item, gonna go off and shave a few cds now 🤣
Pretty sure I would drop it on my record whilst doing the strobe test.
You actually need the 'stabilizing outer ring clamp'... https://www.waynesaudio.com/product-page/turntable-outer-ring-for-vpi-clearaudio-basis-kronos-hanss-micro-seiki-music-lin
There are so many to choose from... https://www.turntablelab.com/collections/record-weight-45-adaptors
I just saw the spiral 45 adapter on that page - that's a lovely novelty: https://www.turntablelab.com/products/love-and-victory-black-spiral-45-adaptor
Rewatched this on TV this morning. One tried and true method of warping records is put it in the oven at 200° on a biscuit baking tray edge for 3 minutes. I got the recipe from a cooking book. For whatever reason I really enjoy seeing the wow & flutter meter. It's probably due to the number of years it has appeared in your videos.
It turned out to be a worthwhile purchase. I’ve been cleaning out the loft today in anticipation of getting a new roof that leaks less. It’s a soul destroying job as I realise I’ve bought way too many things. If I could do it all over again I’d try to buy nothing other than food and clothing.
Ah but it is an Oxygen Free Record weight? But if the record is warped then surely the weight(s) should be on the rim of the record to help flatten the record down, not in the center which may cause a slight dishing of the record. However for people who want something to help improve your records, can I suggest the TSL Chakra-matic 8000 (pat pending) which helps to re-balance your precious Vinyl's Chakras so help enable optimal listening pleasure. Only a snip at £694.28 plus VAT.
Never found a good way of flattening a record. Put one under a sheet of glass in sunlight for two weeks as I went on a summer holiday, and it did nothing at all. I often open the video as soon as it's posted, just to have in my History for later.
I don't think you can because the material also stretches permanently when it bends and the heat will also melt in partially in a nonreversible way. You might have better luck putting toothpaste back into the tube.
Great video, never knew these existed and now I know I don’t need one.
What HAVE you been missing all this time! :-)
If nothing else, it's a premium paperweight. Audiophile-grade, no less.
Oh dear. I kinda knew that once Mat got his hands on the CD shaver it would only be a matter of time before we'd be seeing more examples of, um, left-field audio adjacent products. I say oh dear because at different times I was that soldier; slaving over Jimmy Hughes HiFi Choice columns and wanting so much to believe the performance of my endlessly crappy budget gear could be greatly improved by some new weirdness described using all the terms Mat mentioned in the video . . . and it's taken - frankly - an embarrassing amount of time to realise just how much of what went into the 'hi-fi' industry before the internet was very clever marketing (that term being responsible for a lot of heavy lifting). To be fair the, ahem, 'logic' of record weights sorta made sense, coming as they did from the parallel universe to that of the extraordinarily heavy turntable platter on a belt-driven deck because, well, intertia innit. Back then you started to lose me at the next level down the iceberg - cable lifters, and 'magic' plugs and sockets. But for me, the undisputed kings of this stuff were/are Shun Mook. I'm sure Mat's heard of them but if you haven't take a look at their document setting out the 'additional' applications of their Mpingo discs: yup, it's as mad as it sounds: http://shunmook.com/userinfo/Shun%20Mook%20Application%20of%20the%20Mpingo%20Disc.pdf
Audio Technica’s poor translation from Japanese in these days of AI translation is actually quite charming. I’m now off to design and patent a vacuum turntable to suck your warped disks flat…
Unfortunately it’s been done - I’m not sure who got there first but you’ll find a few demos of vacuum turntable systems on youtube.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one Matt. The 'AMSR' intro looks like an exercise in filming and editing and is quite beautiful. (Yeah the joke works!) I do enjoy the 'debunking audiophile stuff' ones. It's your true calling.
I remember having flexi discs when I were young. Some had a circle near the middle to put a penny. That worked fine so I think 600g is a bit over the top. I have a weight but never use it as I notice no difference with or without.
I use a 170g hockey puck I drilled in the center.
When commercial radio broadcasters used turntables did they use weights like that? I imagine that sort of thing might be useful for flexi discs.
Record weight efficacy not withstanding, I appreciated the effort put into and enjoyed the editing of the prologue
Heh! This reminded me of sometime in the early eighties when I left a Huey Lewis and The News 45rpm single on my record player for - probably - an entire summer. When I finally noticed, it had warped so badly it obstructed the tone arm so the pickup couldn't even touch half the record. Oops.
it’s hip to be warped
I'm always scared of being a "bad" viewer for channels I like. If I start watching a video but stop 30 seconds in to take care of something, does me watching it in full later negate that? Does watching in pieces and not in one sitting count as a full view? Is it better to click on the video in my subscription feed, in the recommendations, or directly in the channel? Is it better to watch through Patreon before it goes live, or on its air date? Does liking every video help, or do the likes get watered down and should be used sparingly instead? Am I just placing too much importance on myself as one lone viewer?
Good questions! Is the time average calculated according to the viewer id? If I watch it 10 times, does it count as one view or 10? This might be easy to test with zero-views videos. Waiting for the Techmoan video about that. Will watch it several times :p
Not a glowing review.. more of a PSA
Would have loved to see you measure your wow & flutter test record both with and without this weight. Even on a quality turntable, if the theory is true, then the weight should make a small but measurable difference. Also, how silly is it that you can't use the stroboscopic disc while the weight is *on* the record. The added weight will increase friction in the system, which will affect the speed, so you'd really want to calibrate your turntable speed with the weight on it. And moreover, if they're going to charge £125 for this thing, they could put a smartphone-type accelerometer/magnetometer sensor IC in it, and the light could shift colors depending on whether you need to speed up or slow down the turntable to hit exactly one of the common speeds.
I didn't think of that - probably because I assumed I already knew the results. However it's a good suggestion to help underline things so I'll see if I can find the time to add this in.
This was one of those rare occasions when my yelling at the screen actually worked - I was, of course, shouting at you to try a clamp instead of a weight - and then you did! I have one or two records with a very slight warp that do benefit from being clamped down, but not something I ever otherwise do. As to a rechargeable weight with coloured lights for £125 - there's one born every minute, as they say. Great video, have a good weekend, Mat...
From the title I thought you meant 56Kg, which is probably the same as the platter on some high end decks.
Once again a very interesting video about a product I have no desire to purchase!
I’d class that as a success.
My best video is only 59% after 30 seconds ☹️ Mind you, around 90% of people move away within 15 seconds when I speak to them in the street, so for me, YouTube is a win!
I suspect when most of the views come from subscribers it’s more than likely they know what to expect so put up with whatever it is that annoys everyone else. At least that’s how I think my channel works.
A classic cutting through the bullshit Techmoan video. I love it.
Cool. Hummingguru also has record cleaning devices. Another cool thing to try? 😂 I also have a record weight. It has a spirit level on top, which is quite useful. Beyond that... Never really noticed any difference.. Yours does look a lot cooler though! And that for only 6 times the price (or so)! Such great value for money! I loved the video. Some smart reasoning and humour. What more would you want I did see a $100k turntable, which has a perforated platter and a pump that sucks the air out underneath. So the vacuum pulls the record down making it perfectly flat. Now THAT should work! One slight disadvantage is the huge noisy pump that needs to go somewhere. But I suppose if you can spend $100k on a turntable..
I did review this one https://youtu.be/pj2MbDpP-HA It also took a one way trip to the tip a few weeks ago.
• Why we Americans use 'z' instead of 's' in certain words confuzzles me. • The issue here is pretty vs. practical. It seems to me whenever a company puts a priority on the pretty vs. the practical they put a premium on the prices. It's really P. • Nonetheless I always wondered what record player weights did for the sound quality, if anything. Thank you for explaining that there are very vague benefits for using one. I do like the strobe RPM test, but the phone app tester is easier and faster. • I really like the video's opening sequence. I admit that I was hoping there was a new method of ultrasonic record cleaning when I read the video title. I started using the anti-static pistol on my records after you used it in a prior video. Here's hoping your roof repairs aren't driving you mad. Take care 🤍.
I saw a video a while back on how that Zerostat gun should be used…I forget exactly how but I seem to think you’re supposed to pull it away from the disc as you squeeze the trigger. Someone found this on the original instructions which are no longer supplied.
I have an extremely warped copy of Revolver, and the Magical Mystery Tour EPs (both probably Dutch first pressings) I have are also heavily warped. All play fine, without any problems on my Pro-Ject turntable 😅. I always use that arguments that vinyl lasts longer than CDs 😜. The lighting looks cool though, but definitely not worth that amount of money...
Hmm, my quite warped records really don't play well on my 1965 Thorens turntable as the cartridge hits the record (bottoms out really). Not really much i can do about that 😂
I can see helping a bit an older machine that has decent power but is no longer running smooth. But even in that case you'd be better served by a new mat, new belt and a few drops of lubricant (and would be cheaper too).
300g is very lightweight for a record weight, bearing in mind they sell 180g records, it’s less weight than two discs…so I can’t see it doing much of anything.
Flippin'eck! Started the video here and got some weird bloke talking Dutch to me. Had to switch to the YouTube app to get the original sound track. No idea what YT was thinking, and I couldn't switch languages here.
I let YT activate the auto dub feature they’ve been pushing. I have been using it to watch some Japanese car review channels and thought that it worked okay, not perfect, but okay. My main gripe is the weird high pitched whiny voice they use…I hope I sound better in Dutch.
Back in the 80s Richer Sounds sold a very cheap lightweight plastic record stabiliser which gripped the spindle (due to a rubber centre) and helped secure flexidiscs when playing them. It worked well and I only used it for Flexidiscs. Try cleaning a Flexidisc without securing it and the disc itself moves with the cleaner!
Obviously the HumminGuru record weight doesn't work as well as one might wish, but the version 2.0 will undoubtedly be improved with a the new smartphone app which will solve all those problems.😉
Mat, I also related your comments about the (erroneous) 50% quit rate to another YouTuber (Rewboss) that I follow who posted today about a similar problem he's had with people clicking off after 30 seconds. He's planning some changes to his video format such as unlisting older videos (some are 15 years old or so) which helps the algorithm. Also plans to include a "hook" in the intro which is meant entice viewers to stick around longer. He related that his latest video which began with him standing in a empty space outdoors speaking to the camera and realized that's likely not an engaging video intro. It sounds like a reasonable strategy to me especially since he reassured his viewers that he would not be going "Mr. Beast" on them. Anyway, it seemed interesting to me that just this morning two of my favo[u]rite YT creators posted new content that talked about similar issues with how YT operates.
I own a Technics SL-10. This has a built-in hockey puck "clamp" that dubs as a strobe. I can supposedly play an album upside-down according to the then ads but I never had a need to.
The lava orange glow looks really cozy. I'm just disappointed it doesn't play MP3s.
But does putting it on turn metal into heavy metal? :) I actually might have a use for that clamp thing. My record player, which is older than me, has a lot of momentum. When it autostops the record will keep turning for a solid minute if left alone. I stop it by pushing down on the label or just picking it up while still turning but that clamp would give me a surface to stop the record without rubbing the label.
You could simply utilise a clutch from an old car for the same purpose.
Cinematic opening 😁. Hyperbolic paraboloid….. IYKYK…
Now, what happens if your record player is on the washing machine on a spin cycle? Or maybe on a boat. Or both. (That's tongue-in-cheek if that's not obvious!)
I have a record weight for flexis (I have... far too many), and to be honest it barely even makes a difference there. It's only really needed for the most unruly ones. There is a built-in spirit level, so that's useful at least - I keep it with my Reloop Spin portable, where it fits very snugly under the lid.
From a US perspective, I was staring at this thumbnail asking "How on Earth could that little thing weigh 125 pounds?" LOL
You notice how Y.T.ers are now telling you that something special will happen at the end… “so, be sure to watch to the end, or you’ll end up missing it. In the end. Right.” What will make my records sound better is some anti-aging spray, or pills, or whatever. Maybe they should claim that the special light is actually an, “Anti. Aging. Radiated. Obfuscation. Nanotechnology,” or “The Aaron Effect.” That’d be worth 120 pounds.
Yes 'My top six reasons I can't be bothered making a proper video' .Number 5 will amaze you. Plus a bonus reason. Also let me know in the comments what your favourite cheese is. Don't forget to like and subscribe and hit the bell. We're going for one million subscribers before December help us reach that number and we'll do an iPhone give away. If you want to see more content like this.....etc etc Once all that is done with it's the end of the video.
The high under 30s stat is likely due to a very annoying YouTube mouse over video thumbnail quirk. To demonstrate, leave your mouse on any video thumbnail on the homepage for 10+ seconds, then go into your watch history. I regularly get videos I never actually watched in my history as a result of my mouse hovering some thumbnail while deciding what to watch next.
It turned out to be an error in the system. It cleared itself up after a day.
I’m hungry. I thought it was the HalloumiGuru.
Sounds like a Vegetarian Cafe.
I'm shocked. When I read 'turntable speed test' on the box I was sure it would have an accelerometer and Bluetooth connection to an app.
Missed opportunity to gather personal information. They need a version 2.
Being a US viewer when I saw "pound" written out I was thinking that seems excessive. Is it made of tungsten? Then I remembered it was Techmoan.
I'm from the UK and even I thought the same!
I understand this intro was done as a bit of a joke, but it's genuinely a really nice, different introduction and display of the whole hifi system.
It was longer, but I felt I was pushing my luck, so the Zerostat gun bit got the chop.
another potential source of the numbers is that i always start the video in the patreon player before immediately clicking the youtube button to watch it in the web player
I do the same. Rest assured that patreon views are a rounding error on the end results stats.
I wonder if I unintentionally contribute to the number who abandon after a few seconds. I often click the link on Patreon so that the video opens; then I close it and find it in my history on the TV app. I know there's a correct way to link a mobile device to the TV app but for reasons I can't fully explain, I don't like one being controlled by the other.
I actually do the same.
I read the title and I thought you were reviewing a record weight that literally weighed 125 pounds. I was looking forward to watching you place it without crushing your turntable.
I’m glad, that’s what I’d hoped.
Great now I need to watch the first 10 seconds of this video 500,000 times to make you chuckle, there goes my whole weekend
