A better Burger?

I think we can all agree, my video on the original Sound Burger record player was the only reason this product returned from the dead (*citation needed).

Well now there’s rival device from whoever bought the Toshiba Aurex brand in a charity shop. It’s called the AX-RP10, but just wait till you hear its catchier alternative name,  it’s a mouthful.

https://youtu.be/ehqi1YnflIc

I just managed to get this video in under the wire, as no sooner had it uploaded, than the broadband went down for my area. Apparently it’s only due to come back on after 9 PM. I suspect it was this video that caused the problem by being just too good.

I hope you’re doing well, take care and have a good week.

At first glance that looked home made, from a gutted TV.

Off topic but I'm enjoying the 'Auto Shenanigans' channel you subtly introduced me to. I love his humor When are you going to get your own stunt double? 😁

I’m waiting to hear back from Brad Pitt

How’s that Libratone Zipp Mini 2?🙏 Not every day one finds a Bluetooth speaker with a zip! 😆

G
Grace Robbins · August 23, 2025

Were you planning to release the video this morning? I already put it on my public playlist, just checking. 🙂

T
Techmoan · August 23, 2025

I forgot all about it, I was out shopping for food then building some shelving. I’ve released it now.

It's funny how much design aesthetics matter. Despite all its user upgrades, the almost comically bland design of the Aurex makes the Sound Burger look like a Ferrari. Love the Walky ad clip!

Fair enough!

Hey Mat, enjoyed the Aurex record player review greatly. Do you have any plans to review the Aurex cassette player as well? It's a type c player!!

T
Techmoan · August 21, 2025

No plans. It’s just the same old clunky junk mech in a plastic box. I bought a different one recently to review but when it arrived the idea just depressed me, as I know exactly what it’ll be like, so it’ll stay in the box.

K
Kevin Barberie · August 20, 2025

This review seems so familiar, it was one of the worst cases of deja vu ever. I would have bet money that I'd seen it before. 🤔

T
Techmoan · August 21, 2025

That’s not good.

W
Wm. Cox · August 20, 2025

Hey Mat. How about a vid on the new Korg Handytraxx Tube? You are the best at dissecting these portables. I'm very interested in the Tube!

T
Techmoan · August 21, 2025

Unfortunately it’s well beyond my price range for a review item. At that price you could get a really nice record player.

B
Brian H · August 20, 2025

I like your weekend nail varnish colour Mat!!

G
Grace Robbins · August 20, 2025

Misappropriation of spousal equipment, no doubt. The nail brush and hair dryer have been utilized in the past, if I recall correctly. 😁

G
Gadgetman · August 20, 2025

It's good but they should do other colours because that will yellow.

T
Techmoan · August 20, 2025

I wouldn’t worry, it’ll likely die first.

J
Jonathan Bittner · August 20, 2025

Classic Techmoan fun

The use of No Jacket Required to demonstrate the jacket artwork display was wonderful!

B
Bruce Grembowski · August 20, 2025

Thanks for this video. I think this might be a better portable record player than my RokBlok (it was a gift, and I never use it). One thing, though: I tried to find the RPM - Turntable Speed Accuracy app by Philip Broder, but it apparently isn't available for Android. Can you recommend a good app for us plebes?

T
Techmoan · August 20, 2025

Perhaps someone else can recommend something. I suppose the problem might be that with so many types of Android phone it’s difficult to ensure accuracy across all models.

T
Tim Barker · August 20, 2025

Looks a nice little record player, I like that. I've had a few turntables post millennium that have been a bit out out of spec with the speed, they probably just have a person in manufacture that just turns the speed control to a set position e.g 1 o'clock position for 33rpm etc and just glues it in place, baised on one that was physically checked at the R&D stage of development.

T
Techmoan · August 20, 2025

That sounds very plausible.

"I can't imagine them using the Aurex name in the west. It sounds a little bit too much like a contraceptive." I laughed so loud, it's a wonder I didn't wake my spouse. A brilliant review, Mat. And this certainly seems better value for money than the Sound Burger, to be frank.

S
Stephen Gozza · August 20, 2025

I laughed so hard. Assuming most people would click away knowing he was wrapping up makes it even more an astute joke

F
Funkmon · August 20, 2025

Looks pretty good. I am not in the market for a portable record player but if I was I'd import this

A
Andrew Shaw · August 20, 2025

My audiophile brother would probably rather chop an arm off than use that player… but looks pretty tempting to me. Does sound very plasticky though when handled.

R
Rolf Dekker · August 19, 2025

Some interesting chips spotted there! I guess the analog signal takes a quick digital detour before it finds its way to the line-out. Must be the modern route!

D
Drew Fields · August 19, 2025

Fun video! also made me go and speed test my Burger, which was, as you predicted, about 2% fast.

T
Techmoan · August 20, 2025

Let it play a record through and then test it again, I’m sure these things drift a bit.

W
William Schroeder · August 19, 2025

It's possible that it is meant to run on a different frequency than the UK uses. I have a National TE61 Clock/Timer that didn't run at the correct speed until I bought a frequency changer for the 50Hz Japan to the 60Hz USA. Works perfectly.

G
Grace Robbins · August 19, 2025

Since it operates with a battery the hz doesn't play a factor. I could have a 220V 50hz boombox and use it with battery power anywhere in the world. On the other hand if I chose to charge a 110V item with mains power of 220V, I should expect a fried device without proper power adjustment. Edit: flippin' hell, Watt the Volt?

c
cbx · August 19, 2025

The name Aurex actually has a meaning. It stands for audio king: https://ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurex

T

So nothing too grand then.

No copyright strike yet on the silent record? Still early, I guess.

I am a little bit surprised that there is only a single 18650 cell in this, admittedly it isn't doing much but a decent cell costs £20 or less. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.

G
Grace Robbins · August 19, 2025

• It's a nice new product - thanks for featuring it. I'm pleased to no end that companies are still making an attempt to produce record players that don't annihilate records. • Maybe you have to be in Japan to have it play at an accurate speed, out of the box. After all, it must 'only be used in Japan.' 😏 • It must be superior to the Sound Burger, because there are more varieties of sandwiches than burgers. Not to mention cheeseburgers. • A new mystery develops - what variable speed do the Mister Disc machines operate at? • 'Aurex' looks like a company that not only makes contraceptives but products that 'twiddle your pots', too. 😳 • I imagine the next product to arrive on the scene will be the Jabber Walky. Or... a new film by Terry Gilliam entitled 'Soundwitch Wocky.' 🤪 • My tremendously idiotic quips aside - this is yet another entertaining video. I've had success using my headphone amp in the line out on the Sound Burger, but perhaps I should shop for some lightweight Bluetooth headphones that don't make my ears sweat. Or, I wonder if headphones with built-in volume controls would work with it? https://ebay.us/m/G4fQeO Take care 🤍.

T
Techmoan · August 19, 2025

Re your second point I know you’re joking but I’m pretty sure somebody in the YouTube comments will suggest that the reason it’s running at the wrong speed is because I’m using it on a different voltage or something equally insane. and regarding your last point, you’ll only be able to get as loud as line level, which is almost certain to be too quiet.

C
CBits Tech · August 19, 2025

I have red and yellow Sound Burgers, too. They look like children's toys IMO. But the Aurex Sound Witch (fun name, and an homage to the Sound Burger) looks cheap to me. A bit like that cassette winder thingy (I want one of those too. No point in buying the Aurex, though. Another great video.

T
Techmoan · August 19, 2025

The perfect colours to pair with a Sound Hotdog.

S
Simon Arnold · August 19, 2025

Contraceptive? You weren't too hard on it 😁 Also today my tiny Sound Burgers were delivered from Japan. They weren't delivered to my house though because I'm at work all day. When I collect them from my folks I'll put a photo in the chat area.

T
Tom Holec · August 19, 2025

Now you're going to jail, because you've used it outside of Japan!

T
Techmoan · August 19, 2025

I’m pretty much under house arrest nowadays anyway. I only go out so I can come back in again.

M
Michiel Beijen · August 19, 2025

I’m glad Toshiba or whatever company is running Aurex is happy to put the engineering in to make this. I would be interested to see if they’d also eventually build “Walky” cassette players!

T
Techmoan · August 19, 2025

You can get them https://aurex.jp/products/ax-w10c/ However like every other cassette player that’s sold today or will be made at any point in the future, until the end of time….it’ll be mediocre, on a good day.

D
Duncan · August 19, 2025

Less than a month after I bought myself a new Soundburger to go alongside my 1980s one and the Anabus I bought a couple of years ago after seeing your video on that.

Top notch pun from the Aurex team. Almost worth it for that alone.
