A new Nixie Tube Radio
You might have seen the lovely vintage Nixie Tube FM radio tuner in my HiFi. I also have a different one in storage that I hope to show at some point in the future.
It was almost inevitable therefore, that if someone decided to make a brand new radio featuring a Nixie Tube frequency display I’d have to take a look at it.
That device is called the Retio and here’s my video https://youtu.be/ZRXpH8TanXs
I plan to release this video this weekend and delay the public release of the budget projector video to the weekend after.
I hope your week is going well so far. Take care.
UPDATE - Re-edited to snip a couple of seconds to remove inadequate DAB poor tuning description related concerns.
UPDATE 2 - Snipped a few more seconds to reduce wood type pronunciation related issues.
UPDATE 3 - Snipped out another sticking point

Mate, you are looking well - good to see
At this point in time, I find it appropriate to revisit this cautionary video: https://youtu.be/B2bbB_7CFew
I'm so late, the video dropped on Youtube before I had time to watch it on Patreon. And it's about a 4-year late product. That I won't comment on because my mom told not to. Great entertaining video, thanks!
Really seems like someone forgot to adjust the gain on the DAB tuner. DAB is touchy to begin with so getting that right is crucial.
Video quality and camera work looks great!
Sure, sure, sure ... the DAB+ may have been sketchy ... and, well, the FM, too ... and the speaker was ... making noise ... but HOW ABOUT THOSE NIXIE TUBES, huh??? I mean, sure, you had to fix the assembly error and there is no real 5 but ... Yeah.
I very much enjoyed the video. I don't think I could say the same for the product being reviewed.
Bit of a garbage novelty radio.
But a good video
What a cool idea. But one of them crooked and pretty crappy reception.. Hmm.. It seems not quite finished after 4 years.. I’ll pass and go look for a clock instead I think :)
I'll say this: it certainly looks the part. Nixies just look better inside a midcentury-style cabinet.
Another banger ❤️
Such a shame this didn't work out. But the video was very entertaining nevertheless, so silver cloud and all that!
Any chance of putting the 1.0 edit back online for the TM completists? 😅
I bet Grace has it lol
Dolly🥰
I think we can come to the conclusion that building a good radio is a lot harder than building a nixie clock.
4 years seems about right for a Kickstarter. The last one I backed took just over 3 years from go to whoa.
That was truly the greatest way you could have ended that review. WHEW... it had NOTHING going for it. I can't believe that thing was $340. In reference to your mention on small speakers not producing big sound- may I point you to the Muzen Portable Bluetooth Speaker (and radio). The sound it produces is truly incredible. Rich- big- precise sound. I don't sell them... I just love it.
I missed the unedited video in which I assume Mat pronounces the type of wood as wenj (rhymes with Stonehenge). That's just how I pronounced when I first saw it about 15 years ago listed as an optional wood for a Tivoli Audio Model One radio. I have since learned from YouTuber Robert Dunn, not from his car channel "Aging Wheels" but from his woodworking channel "Under Dunn" that he pronounces it as wengy (rhymes with Ferengi).🙂
Wenge's pronunciation makes perfect sense if you hear somebody else pronounce it first. How else would you spell it? Maybe "wen-ge" or "wengue." Or rename it altogether
Shame that didn't work out, the tarnish (or dirt) on the brass bezel didn't look great either for a premium product. I keep meaning to ask, how is your sense of taste holding up now?
Unfortunately my sense of taste and smell both disappeared completely a few weeks ago.
Are you supporting any Kickstarter items? It is you I have to blame my addition to kickstarter. Mine are video and table top RPG Games. Did you mention the price?
The current price is on Retio.co - it’s varies with discounts and where in the world you’re ordering from. As for kickstarter I think I have one or possibly two outstanding (excluding all the ones that ran away with my money that I’ll never live to see get delivered).
What are the other Kickstarter reviews like? Are all speakers sounding like this, or is your unit a bit faulty?
Feel free to have a look on Kickstarter, I haven’t but I’ve read through the comments here and 100% of the owners who have given their opinion aren’t happy with the radio performance on theirs either. I also feel that it might be time to ask my T-shirt guy to produce one with “Maybe yours is faulty” on it.
I think it’s only DAB not DAB+ which would explain why it was tuning into blank stations. Also the burbles are only normally heard on DAB, DAB+ just mutes on a poor signal.
The box said DAB+ but maybe it's false advertising
What a shame… does seem to be a bit of a let down 😢. I wouldn’t be able to use it as an expensive clock either as I really don’t like the way those upside down “2’s” look as “5’s”. I’d be gutted to have spent so much and waited so long and then found those tubes skewing off straight out of the box like that. Not being in the know with kick starter , can you return it? Video was great though and hopefully this will help others decide if they want one or not. It’s certainly made my mind up! Thanks for sharing, regards.
At least here in Italy it's s pronunciated vengé with hard V and G and it's an african wood.
Ahhhh I’m looking forward to this one, live Nixie tube devices 😁 Lee
I also backed this and mine arrived the other day. Maybe I won't bother to open it! Whilst it doesn't excuse the radios very poor performance, some DAB stations sound horrible at the best of times being both heavily volume compressed and bit-rate compressed. Greatest Hits Radio always sounds a bit edgy with severe volume compression / limiting and I'm being kind there. BBC sounds fine as they know not to use heavily volume compression and the bit rates aren't horrendously low.
I bought one of these too - an American model, which has a different tuner. No DAB here. The FM radio is completely unusable, it sounds overdriven and distorted all the time. I emailed them and they told me it could be fixed with a firmware update, but, no firmware update has been forthcoming, and it's been about a year now. A real shame.
You’re looking well in this. Easy to forgot how you were a few months back! Shame the same can’t be said for the thing you’re testing.
Looks like a nice idea, but unfortunately not the best quality... Disappointing...
• Thanks for creating this video. I was really looking forward to a Nixie tube clock radio. Now I won't be upset that I couldn't afford it, thanks. 😉 • "the moment never ends" because the moment is spent trying to justify a four-year-long moment waiting for this... thing. • My guess is the Kickstarter summary didn't mention that their plan was to make DAB and FM sound like AM radio. • 'That piano's broken.' I snort-chuckled. • Your closing bit - I snort-chuckled AND I briefly choked on my water. 🤣 That was the comedy gold that I needed right now. • The closing bit also looked really good, composition-wise. You're an endless source of entertaining moments that never end. Take care 🤍.
Yes while recording when I saw that on the box I did comment that the wait nearly never ended, but it sounded a bit mean, so I snipped it. I'm happy with the to-camera composition now, although after this video I did find a way to raise up the TNTs another 15cm.
"a bit hot/peaking": That are horrible distortions! what a disappointment!
I’m going to follow your mum’s advice and not say anything about the radio either. Great video though, as always!
Oh hey! I was part of the original Kickstarter for this. I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it.

I'm a fan of original Nixie devices like frequency counters and other 60s test equipment. I do have a Nixie watch that is about 15 years old and never wear it but sometimes demo it for people. I like a watch that can show in real-time my Libre blood sugars. I'm really pleased a chap like you gets these things and reviews them in such an accessible way. You've saved me a few hundred quid. I think that radio needs a small OLED screen that can be blank most of the time but when required can display the station name, multiplex, signal strength, battery percent etc.
The thing you mention with the watch and the blood sugar is why I’m using an Apple Watch. I’d love to alternate it with some of my other watches but I can’t. I’ve now decided to wear two watches, one on each wrist. One that keeps me alive and one that makes me happy.
