Patreon Oddcast for May 2025

As promised/threatened/pre-warned, I’ve made an update video just for Patrons. Here it is. As usual, most of it makes very little sense.

https://youtu.be/siwM31m1rSI

Take care.

Long time free loader on YouTube, finally decided to subscribe on Patreon. Great update podcast, looking forward to many more hours of great video. Thanks

Glad you’re here, there’s plenty more of these extras, although they’re probably best consumed in small doses.

the backdrop is giving technology connections vibes. he actually uses TVs behind the shelf for create the colours. As for someone to act as a Steward of your collection, the only person that comes to mind is Sam from Look Mum No Computer.

When my dad died, I cleared his shed. It took me weeks, because I wanted to consider everything in the shed, to the last box of specialty screws (it was also therapeutic). So I think your storage needs to be cleared by people who care about retro. So maybe you could setup a "retro-trust" of a couple of people in your region. Put up a foundation, so it's legally sound. Hope this helps.

V
VWestlife · May 11, 2025

You should upload the first part of this video as a PSA about handheld microphones, like you did with the PSA about cheap record players (which now just about everyone on Reddit links to when the topic comes up).

EdTheNerd · May 10, 2025

Glad you're doing well Mat, I've just realized I've been enjoying your content for 10 or so years so now and that I'm quite overdue to hop on here. I've amassed quite a collection as well, and my father has an unfathomable amount of records. Even if I'm not as old as he is, life is luck of the draw and all that so I've wondered how I'd ensure at least the worthwhile bits can give my family something to offset the shockingly high cost of passing (Cruel world). I've taken to putting a bit of the collection into a spreadsheet along with pictures so its not pure model-number hell.

Should anything happen to you matt us patreon community would create the techmoan museum

T

I think that would be a lot more work than it would be worth. The real museum is the YouTube archive. A boombox sitting in a glass cabinet isn’t any fun.

Hey Mat, I am Patron since the last 5 minutes, but i've been following you for almost 10 years... Thanks to you, I have a DCC player, some nifty minidisc players, 8-track player, WM-D6C, reel to reel, and even a Tefifon! I don't say that you review any device, I just say that the device has been "Techmoaned" :) Greetings from Portugal!

I think if it came to it Mat there would be people on here - and I would definitely be one of them - who would be willing to help take charge of the collection and find ways of moving it on. I did this for my cousin who died suddenly and had a lifetime collection of Dr Who merch. I am a big fan of your channel and I'd do anything I could to assist

M
Mr.G · May 10, 2025

I'd have stuck it all in the Tardis;) . Serious point. Some collections are easier to move on. Retro computing we have Bletchley and Swindon. Vintage wireless and audio we have BWS (British Vintage Wireless Society). Matt's eclectic mix would be much more difficult and would need to be stored probably long term in a temperature / humidity controlled environment if they were to be working exhibits. Tim Hunkin wrote an excellent guide on setting up a museum. It would be a real shame if the "Techmoan collection" had to be split up.

Also during the first minutes of the video I was inspecting all the fun stuff you’ve put in the background and see what is turned on / doing something. only the bottom left corner could be improved by maybe hiding those power plugs / cords

L
Ludwig Kormann · May 9, 2025

Best thing would probably be to slowly start auctioning / selling / gifting stuff in the upcoming years - I could imagine that if you really got the „3 month message“ one day, you would probably not spend a thought on all the stuff and just enjoy the time. Handling it financially reasonable within 3 months seems like an impossible task, but I also find it very hard to even imagine getting a message like that. And I really believe everything will turn out good for you and there will be many years to come :)

V
VWestlife · May 9, 2025

YouTube used to have a "branding intro" feature that let you automatically add a 3-second intro clip to your videos, but that feature only lasted for less than one year, from May 2014 to March 2015.

Funniest oddcast ever! 😄 Hope it all turns out reet, Mat. I had a call from the hospital today letting me know I don’t have cancer of the old *whistle* That liquid in the body cavity is called ascites. My mate had liver failure and had about 12 litres of fluid drained from his cavity every ten days. It looked like cider and I called it ‘Dave juice’

B

A
Amro · May 7, 2025

Glad you're sounding much better. I was thinking maybe (actually like my mother who has a collection of Afghan Textiles) you could leave it to a museum/organisation? I have no answers more than that - useless I know - but it is a bit of a problem. I am thinking about all my books. But until recently - 2nd hand bookshops will turn up to your house and offer you £1 a book. Something I'll have to start thinking about.

D
Dave Curran · May 7, 2025

Another thought would be donating to a museum. Don't want to drop Sam in it, but something like This Museum is Not Obsolete. They could exhibit the more interesting bits of tech and sell the more mundane for funds?

D
Dave Curran · May 7, 2025

It's tricky. I've got a house full of vintage computers that might be worth something to the right person, but it basically just a number of skips to fill for everyone else. I know a few people like me, and maybe if I had notice I could get them to come and take what they want, but they have houses and maybe storage lockers full of stuff as well, so probably wouldn't take much. I had to deal with it when I moved back up't north from working down south for 10 years and the timing didn't work out, so I had ended up just taking what I could over a few trips. My life in 3 transit van loads. Tried to sell / give away the rest, but difficult to do remotely, so most of it was dealt with by a house clearance firm.

J
John Kolesa · May 7, 2025

For the 3 month question: reach out to this community to find 2-10 people who are willing to take big chunks of your collection, sell them off and give an agreed upon percentage to your wife. In general..... you and I are similar ages. I've been regularly selling off all the things I've accumulated over the years. Probably a good time for you to start the same.

The AI review videos are complete garbage, it’s like an internet virus these days. Sadly the majority of views on these channels are made up of the first 30+ seconds from first click, to see what a video is like. I’m so sceptical of pretty much any reviews these days. Once upon a time Amazon reviews were trusted… now I’ll take that bullshido with a pinch of salt. Bots bots bots. I enjoy these Patreon videos you do. Cheers Lee

S
Simon van Wees · May 7, 2025

You know Matt, i am really on the edge of my seat, the parts near the end of the video! It is almost a bit like a fever dream. So where you are at now medically, i was in the same boat, well more or less, concerning that liver biopsy. On the echo it was not noticable. I first thought well worst case scenario, if it would be cancer, they saw one spot so they could scoop out the bad part with a spoon of some sorts and maybe some radio and chemo and i could live on. Then came the final result and it was'nt looking could. It wasn't outside the liver, but it had metastized inside the liver. They couldn't give a life expectancy, only they could say, if i got the quick variant i would only have had weeks, if i had the slow variant, i could live for at least 6 moths. Well i am still here and despite extreme fatigue doing reasonably well. I feel like a candle fading out very very slowly. Okay, (or not okay of course) i got a rare type called Angio Sarcoma. It is a cancer in the cells of the innerlining of bloodvessels and lympvessels. I could have had the brutest chemo but would only be life extending not getting better, so i opted for palliative care and have now care at home, a wheelchair some aids, fentanyl 50 microgram for the pain and that is basically where i am at now. Now your questons about your valuable stuff, ironicaly i would have like to donate my stuff to you. See i don't have like a vast collection of electronics you have, but i got for example almost all cdplayers, i believe 6 cd players that also can play 5" cdvideodiscs. I got one Pal and 5 r 6 NTSC ones. I got a thread on the laserdisc database about cdvideo 5" specifically. So i am the point now also that i really find it a pity to just diss those. I let my eldest brother heir what is left after i am gone, but so i am pondering what i shall do. Also for me is also too much a hassle eBay etc. I've got some 100 some rare laserdiscs to go with it. And then i got some rare modeltrains as well... same thing, i was over the moon to buy that rare modeltrain, tram it is actually as perhaps someone died and wa resold. Now i am in the same boat. Where do i leave valuable stuff. Well, 1st of al, like i said i am on the edge of my seat about what will be the outcome in your case. Sometyimes you can login and can already see before they call. So let's hope you are doing fine and that it will be something you can recover from with the right therapies. Next, if it turns out you are totaly fine, are you interested in me donating my audio/video stuff to you? I hope you are doing well. Maybe i better should ask this via pm, but i was thinking to let you know. Take carw Mattt!

T
Techmoan · May 7, 2025

I’ve likely said it before but I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. I’m not of the mind that ‘these things only happen to other people’ it’s probably been more like this ever since I got the diabetes - so I know that it’s all just down to chance as to what happens to who. I think a lot of people sail through life without ever considering that they are one quick diagnosis away from a life changing event. You’ve been very active on this Patreon thing for so long I always expect your name to appear in the comments and look forward to reading what you have to say. My father is 90 this year and has looked like he’s dead for a couple of years now. Every time I try and visit he just looks like a corpse but apparently is sleeping. That’s no life. But then on TV today I saw someone who was 101 and he looked as healthy as I am. It’s just one big lottery but not everyone realises they’re playing it. I wish you all the best and I’ll be keeping everyone here informed as to my situation whichever way it goes. Take care. As for the donation, unfortunately I’ll have to decline, I’m trying to downsize while I can and then see what’s left to donate/sell.

Brad Jones · May 6, 2025

How about one of those tiny microphones Terry Wogan used to have on Blankety Blank? One of my earliest TV memories, that. Best wishes medically! One of the oddest sensations I've had is the lead-less pen lid sized Micra pacemaker being implanted... via the groin. You're laying flat, knowing this thing is slowly being pushed up through the length of your body, towards the heart, whilst conscious!

The autodubbing feature drives me insane too. It's an opt-out thing, so many YouTubers don't even know it's happening. Very often when I try to watch an Italian video it's on by default, a couple of times it's been impossible to turn off, too. Sadly Italians have completely normalised terrible dubbing and many are completely unaware of how English speakers are generally totally fine with reading subtitles when watching foreign movies/"content".

Lighting "gel" was originally made from gelatin. This was relatively unstable in terms of holding colour (it faded through quickly), and was also flammable. Modern products made by Lee Lighting in the UK and Rosco in the US are made with polycarbonate and will self-extinguish in the event that they are exposed to a flame.

S
Steve Bailey · May 6, 2025

Good to see you back and looking well. In regards to what to do about a collection in the worst case scenario, I'd simply sell the lot to somewhere that specialises in vintage hifi (Criminal Records in Ossett, West Yorkshire) and let them sort it out. I've got a large model car collection, in the event of something happening to me I've told my wife to just take it all to a particular shop that I use and let them buy it from her; yes she'll be lucky to get 30% of their value but she won't have the hassle of describing selling things individually (none of which she has any knowledge or interest in) and dealing with buyers and packaging. I wouldn't wish that hassle on her! EDIT: I've just seen Ian's post about Omega Auctions, that's an excellent idea. Anything that gets it sorted in one go is the best solution!

Have a look at Omega Auctions in the Northwest of England, they take big collections of audio equipment and auction them off as either individual items or collections. They did a James Bond memorabilia auction and regularly have audio equipment auctions. This is an audio and music auction (https://bid.omegaauctions.co.uk/auction/details/a257-day-1-audio-equipment-and-music-memorabilia--day-2-rare--collectable-vinyl-records/?au=200). Good to see you looking fully recovered from the “flu” now! And the studio coming together: lighting and sound both seem “pretty good” at this point. If you, or anyone else, has an hour of interest into why YouTubers hold inappropriate microphones, Tom Nicolas did a deep dive into it a year or so back (“ Why YouTubers Hold Microphones Now”). The TL;DW is it’s basically become a meme for signalling “this isn’t a professional production”. And thus “looks more professional” holding sticks is the antithesis of what they’re aiming to convey! (But 50% of the cases I see now are “making fun of the meme”.) Ewen

Good to see things getting back on track after the illness and setting up the shed/office/studio. It somewhat seems like you're starting a new life from scratch. I'm sure you'll find a way to get rid of all of your stuff when the time comes--hoping that won't be many years in the future. Holding the mic on a stick with a proper foam cover is so professional--just like Thomas of Autogefühl!😃 There's a YouTuber that I follow who has his own unique microphone technique (which may drive you mad): He normally wears a sweater/jumper or a T-shirt in his videos which means there's not an elegant way to clip on a lavalier mic, so he tapes it to his shirt with blue painter's masking tape--even if he happens to be wearing a proper button-up shirt with a collar. His channel is a more "serious" one--climate change--but he also has another career as a comedian and he puts a lot of his humor into his presentations. Anyway Mat, looking forward to seeing whatever you can throw our way.👍

Andrew Shaw · May 6, 2025

This is assuming everything in the locker is not already cataloged with detail: I'd start by hiring someone trustworthy who knows what they're doing to take a decent picture of everything in there. Row by row, shelf by shelf. Indicating in an organized way where everything is by letters- numbers- whatever. And if anything is moved after that put it back where it was. Put those into a filing system that you can go through and add details to the photos for the items you think are actually WORTH selling and what can be binned. Then what valuable items are left can be "glamor shot" for an eventual auction catalog describing the items. These preliminary pictures and descriptions I believe could be used to hook a reputable auction business that could know how to advertise and auction it off. That way all the money goes to you with the buyer's premium and all. Starting the ball rolling nowish would make it less stressful because there's no real time it NEEDS to be done. I may be overstating but I imagine it's a valuable enough and large enough collection that it would need to be handled by a business who knows what they are doing and can see they could make some money on it themselves. Just some quick ideas.

A
Alex · May 6, 2025

Great idea. Doing things by lot (ie. "Crap I don't want anymore" being first) and type/kind (400 minidisc players, 90s walkmans) might make it even easier. I would also consider this: you know what is most valuable off the top of your head - maybe transcribe it into a list (eg., the following items are worth more than £1,000: reel to reel (est. £10,000), hi Fi (est xxx)) - just something jotted down somewhat cleanly with directions to your missus that ideally your estate would get xx% of the value on the page. If you lump into thresholds it might make her decision making easier if it comes to it (ie. She won't spend time on the junk, and will donate certain things to museums).

M
Mike J. · May 6, 2025

Glad you've got over the blood thing, Mat. Regarding the collection, what occurred to me is contacting a local university library (or major museum?), and seeing if they would want any of the more 'professional' / 'commercial' audio or video equipment, perhaps for playing / digitizing their own materials. Certainly would not apply to every piece of equipment, but might be a good home for some of the more 'industrial' stuff auctioneers / audiophiles would be less interested in. Cheers.

I forgot to comment that one of my biggest pet peeves about YouTube videos are the true crime and police bodycam videos I watch. They are rampant with AI caption overlays that are misspelled or flat-out incorrect. I would love it if I could rewrite those things. If they can't be accurate they shouldn't be included with the video.

A
Asaf Sagi · May 6, 2025

I'm seeing this with """reviews""" of white appliances. You know, those with meaningless model numbers that there's no chance of you being able to compare prices or get their proper specs from the manufacturer's website. So YouTube is filled with AI narrated blatherings about these items. I immediately downvote these videos and leave.

A
Andy Ihnatko · May 6, 2025

I just have this image of a memorial service where the altar is absolutely walled on all three sides with every different unique type of media player in your collection, and they're serving as the choir singing your Requiem Mass. I can't guess the composer, but it'll definitely be something from the YouTube music library. The casket (which will be equipped with backup cameras for the procession into and out of the church) will be surrounded by your collection of music visualizers in lieu of candles. Mourners will be invited to gather in the church hall after the service, for a light lunch of microwave ramen.

The things that annoy me about YouTubers who hold a clip-on mic as if it were a handheld are (1) it's such a blatant affectation, and (2) I can't help but wonder if this is one of those things YouTubers do because they've seen it on successful YouTube channels and they're wondering if the Algorithm is favoring videos in which people hold their clip-on mics. But I am 100% in support of YouTubers who clip the mic to their hats.

Wow two videos this weekend, which cheered me up no end, currently dealing with something not pleasant. I think the backlighting looks good on the shelves, but would add some more? If possible try moving the desk forward a bit, with a fast lens and get some background blur? Just an idea. On the question of your stash (hopefully the issue becomes irrelevant with the biopsy result) , as others have suggested maybe a specialist auction, publicised through your channel would be the best? Another idea is a public raffle where you pay then win a random item, the ticket price could be whatever and the proceeds could go to charity? Last idea, do a kind of Willy Wonka chocolate factory scenario, where you find a successor, where you test them during a tour your world, might be hard to find some ummpalumpas though these days. Anyway fingers crossed for the result, we're with you on this still and sending our best wishes!

So good to see you in almost brilliant shape again! If you ask me (I'm an electrician, so I must know ;-) ) I'd say... considering your shape and complexion, the biopsy result will be negative. If you ever have to leave this planet, however, what you need won't be an auctioneer, or salesperson. Rather, you need a trustee, a successor of some kind, somebody who follows in your footsteps and perhaps even continues your channel. All the things you collected deserve to stay together in the first place. But for the moment enjoy your regained health.

UPS guy here in the US, I hate Ring doorbells because of how inconsiderate people often are about packages requiring a signature. It's as though people don't get that when you buy something that requires a signature that it ACTUALLY requires a signature. about 2 - 4 times a day I have to have an argument with some person over a ring camera that is absolutely infuriating. For most cases it's alright but I very much prefer older door bells that you can't speak through, very niche job complaints aside. I'm very glad to see you back at it and being as you should be for the most part, I hope you on the right side of your health stuff. Take care Mat!

Dave Langley · May 5, 2025

Dear Matthew, Here is my idea if the worst happens. First and foremost I am one of your biggest fans. I really am- no bull I would stop whatever I was doing at the time and watch your latest upload within minutes of them being released for many years- so this is where my idea is coming from- I would kind of like keeping the stuff displayed downstairs in my home where there is a quite a big hallway – if you agree- can be collected from you with my man and a van I know- I will pay you for it- at an agreed price beforehand- and what I will essentially create is a tech-moan museum so print off many placard things with featured on episode titled “name of video here” and the date of upload and any relevant musings about it- Top comment for example... and I will by appointment only let people come to said museum- kind of like RMC cave channel guy does with his place. With your permission perhaps set up for a nominal fee- say 15 pounds – just to secure my time so will make sure I will be in for the visitor that may want to see up close all the antiquated tech and relics of yesteryear (when they put some thought into putting these items together at the time of making them). And I could perhaps send maybe a third of that revenue back to the house- so your wife- or maybe a charity of your choosing. I'm a bit of a loner too- but know as well as one can a few people so not completely reclusive as it were- I have met dozens of people through the years through eBay trading and so kind of would like to pay a living homage to you- yours is one of my favourite YouTube channels and for me your 'ranting' and rambling behind the scenes patron videos are just as enjoyable as YouTube. I realize how I think 8 bit guy said something like 1-4hours of work goes into creating 1 minute of video- and I see the effort both he and you have gone through to produce all the content you do- it's not just entertainment- it's prosperity- some of the items you covered will be lost forever except for in the minds of a few dozen people if it was not for you. I kind of get you. I think you have a pretty positive outlook and attitude considering the amount of chronic health problems you have had for decades and being a type 1 diabetic too understand more than most the roller-coaster ride that is trying to keep blood sugar numbers- and therefore our minds and moods in good stead Some things only those with diabetes truly understand. We both have a love of technology in common. A few of my purchases tech wise- you inspired- so it's just an idea I thought I would throw it your way- in your patron community- I don't tend to read comments anywhere- Joe Rogan advice a few years ago to a fellow podcaster- “don't read the comments” - a lot of lonely, insecure people like to throw pixels of hate- as you tend to mention in your videos- I never noticed your voice sounded nasally once for instance- seems you read the comments and like adjust to the amount of negativity thrown your way- you don't deserve taking on the opinion of some 13 year old kid with millionaire parents who party a lot so kid got spoilt rotten with the latest gadgets and games consoles and in game purchases- some opinions are valid and have merit- if they add to the beauty or inspire good things- then great- but if you ain't got nothing nice to say then just say nothing. I would have a laptop looping your videos at my proposed museum and merch I got of yours will be on display- and will be buying more when got funds to do so- your life would not seemed to have lived in vein- to quote a guy from a few centuries ago called Keppler. I would be respectful to you and your work for the last decade or so and it would be joyous rather than mournful- and a celebration of you. However I really don't want to have this proposed Tech-moan museum at all- would much rather have you stick around for a couple of more decades. At least a decade- bare minimum- but be happy- striving to be happy is a noteworthy cause- I am sure your wife also would want the same for you- so if you get bad news- get your fighting head on- and beat whatever illness you may have. So just an idea if the worst was to happen. I have seen people fade away within months of such bad news- and on the flip side I have seen the complete opposite occur with the same bad news. Mini miracles with health can and do always occur- so best of luck with whatever tests you maybe subject to- and wish you the very best if you got to get your fighting head on. Cheers Dave.

Yeah, loved watching an oddcast again! Hopefully everything is fine! Regarding the AI voices.. I agree, you see them everywhere now. Terrible! So i only watch videos in languages that i either understand (Dutch, German, English) and those i understand enough of (hopefully, mostly French and Norwegian). But lots of channels have AI generated voices for other languages.. Brrr... For the stuff... I also have a lot and was married, so I looked into it. There are these people here that buy the bulk. One price and they take it all. Never the greatest price if course, but still.. I wrote down with photos included what stuff to sell separately and the approximate value, and that was it. But I hope it'll just be all right...

Glad to see and hear you're feeling better, my father recently went through several scares with a fear of cancer being a strong likelihood; the offending item that they removed, which ended up requiring general surgery rather than the initially planned keyhole, turned out to be entirely free of cancerous cells despite the specialist being 90% certain it would be. There were other complications that were discovered, due to previous surgeries years ago, but it sounds like you've gone through most of those already. Best of luck with the biopsy results! With regards to clearing out, could be worth investigating auctioneers that deal with entire collections, especially themed ones, whether that be "featured on Techmoan' or just vintage technology.

You're looking a lot better Mat, and definitely sounding likewise. Regarding the getting rid of stuff, I honestly think you have perhaps a unique collection of a/v and other tech. Somewhere like Sotheby's/Bonham's would be able to advise or in fact set up a special sale for your stuff (especially the higher end stuff). I've got a friend who's in the auctions world, so let me know if you'd be interested and we could make contact.

L
Listener Bob · May 5, 2025

Thanks so much for the update Mat! I hope you get good news soon! As for thinning out your collection, in addition to the good ideas below, perhaps segregate your hifi gear and recordings to offer as a lot to a vintage audio shop? (They’re pretty common in major US metro areas and are always looking for stock - apologies if that craze is over, or has yet to start, there.) Feel free to make use of this obvious suggestion in about thirty years or so. There are a half dozen tech museums I owe you a tour of first. We’re all with you!!

Paul Robins · May 5, 2025

Many auction houses now put their auctions on the web, so anyone can bid online while the auction is happening. I saw an item at an auction I visited that no one, including the auctioneer, knew was high-value, and I bid in the room and thought I’d got a bargain, but then online bidders who obviously knew what it was way outbid me! So using an auction house that does that might still ensure your items realise their true value and go to a good home.

Those complaints about using the lavalier microphones held in the hand remind me very much of a particular bugbear of mine - people who, in the real world, use their phones like you always see contestants in the likes of The Apprentice do, instead of holding it to their ears like a normal human. I've lost count of the number of times I've seen people walking down the street trying to have phone conversations while holding their phones out in front of them like it's a slice of Ryvita they're about to bite into. It boggles my mind. As for the comments about your voice sounding like an AI - I think that's just becoming an (ill-informed) shorthand for "I don't like your voice" from people who don't know what they're talking about. I've seen multiple "terrible AI voice" comments on VWestlife's videos over the last few months. It's pretty impressive AI to have gone back in time and made all of his other videos sound the same. Though maybe Kevin's just a Terminator...

Bleedin' heck, Mat! You do not owe us any apologies. Speaking for myself, I just hope you're getting better and that your biopsy results are clean. Should you decide to downsize your collection — I gather that "estate sales" are less common in the UK than they are in the States. In the U.S., there are specialists who will come to your home and appraise your collection — amateur radios, model railways, clocks, what have you — and sell it for you. They keep a percentage of the sale proceeds and you keep the remainder as "profit." We used a service like that when we sold my father's house. It greatly reduced our workload and made the process much smoother. (In our case, anything the specialist didn't sell was donated to charity shops.) You might try calling an estate agent or a probate solicitor and ask whom they would use when they're disposing of a property for someone else. Barring that, your local amateur radio club may know of a specialist who buys and sells lots of electronics. I hope it's a problem that you and Mrs. Mat confront many years down the line, but it's what I would do.

J
Jay Thurber Show - Pittsburgh Radio · May 5, 2025

A Google search suggests that in the UK, rather than "estate sale," the term of art may be "on-site auction." If you have a chamber of commerce in your town, you might see if anyone lists that as their specialty.

I am in the same boat as you with old/retro tech. In my case, several CRT TVs I'd rather not junk since they worked last time I used them all and it's a shame to get rid of working CRTs when there are no more being made. Would rather they go to someone that would appreciate them. Only thought I have is finding someone local but I haven't made much luck on that here. Maybe you have a retro tech club? Even something like a Commodore users group might be interested.

Hi Mat, I don't watch TV, but my highlight is a new Techmoan video or Oddcast. Thank you for all the amazing content you produce. I hope you won't need to, but I'm currently still clearing out my granddad's old AV stuff. Charity shops: Don't value it Ebay/Gumtree: Mess us about Sell items as a joblot if possible. When my mate bought land for his engineering business he inherited a load of gym equipment worth 1000s. It wasn't worth selling, he needed the space in the workshop. He put it on Gumtree £0.00 People would say "Oh the belt is a bit worn on the treadmill" or "Can I take the pedals off the exercise bike and leave you with the bike" stuff like that. Hope that helps.

I'm glad you specified "donate". About ten years after my Father died we got a letter from Gloucester Folk Museum addressed to him saying. If you receive this letter, unfortunately the Museum is closing down so could you come and collect the items you lent us. Said items (toy trains) had been there over twenty years and filled a car. It did solve the mystery of where a live steam locomotive which was missing from a set at home was. I later sold that set on eBay for over £200.

Arron Ware · May 5, 2025

Really glad you're doing better, I really hope everything turns out well, it's terrific that whatever it is, they've caught it early. Like you said, there's a lot of slop appearing on the platform now but you remain one of the highlights of well made and down to earth content. The last video was great fun, always a joy to see you go diving in and start repairing stuff! Glad you enjoyed editing it :) Frankly I'm surprised you've kept all the stuff you've showcased! I thought you would have showcased it and then passed it on already honestly, that is quite the feat, especially with your extensive backlog.

J
J Ruonti · May 5, 2025

The mic thing doesn't bother me but you are right, the plastic thingie does make it look more professional and better to watch. As for the stuff, all I can think of doing is finding someone who has a clue about that stuff and make a deal where they handle all the selling stuff and the money is split fairly. Probably not just some auctioneer who couldn't care less but someone who does. And then hopefully provide a link to patrons so we can take a look if interested. But that is a hard situation and thing to manage. As I completely agree there is a lot of items that should not be just thrown away. It is in a way a grim thought but worth thinking about. I have made some instructions for my stuff in case of something bad too. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst is how I tend to think about it.

I think the best solution is to find someone who you trust who will sell it, and you'll give them a %age commission for doing it. You may want to start paring down now, even though you're still going to be around for a long while longer as it's less of a problem. Just keep an eye out for someone who's open to helping. I see you have the Netgear Orbi mesh. Do you ever have any issues with it or is it just me? The companies who make mesh networks clearly test them in American houses (basically massive wooden shed) and don't consider houses built out of actual building materials. I have a 2 bedroom house and a detached workshop and even with 5 of these dotted around the house, the connection is spotty and it's rare that they all show as being connected in the app. I guess that's the issue with having an old house that's built to last. I approve of all of the orangeness in the background. Sick of the AI YouTube videos. As soon as I hear an AI voice I'm gone and I'll block the channel from being recommended again. I bought the same doorbell as you. I bought another "sounder" only a few months ago. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386170607566 It was easy to program to the old system too. Because of the design of the switch, I found that most delivery people didn't know it was a bell. I had to put a small sign below it.

Re: stuff to get rid of -- don't know if they have this service in the UK, but in the States there are some independent companies where you can send boxes of several items (or even drive them to a drop-off location) and they'll put them up on eBay/manage the auction and take a percentage of the sale. I've never used them, but I keep thinking about it since I'll soon have to get rid of stuff, myself.

D
Duncan · May 5, 2025

If you aren't worried about the money there are lots of charities who would like your stuff to raise funds. I have bought a few bits of audio gear that way> With my late Father's toy train collection I was taking the ones that I didn't think were worth the effort to sell on eBay to the local Hospice shop. One day they told me. We sell quite a few of these on eBay as we get better money there. I didn't mind as it was them having to take photos, wrap, then post them and the money was going to a good cause.

I love the new setup you have so far. 😄 • When you said you were about to do something annoying I thought it would be the crap shot. https://youtu.be/JGKM9oi0mkA • Camera #2 may need to be a bit higher on the tripod. • The new doorbell, does it have a weird advertisement strategy like the old one? https://youtu.be/5cKhyGMZbq8&t=3m33s • I've found that if I don't like the sound of the voice on a video I just change the speed settings or mute and put on CC. • We've now learned you can't be affected by drugs; but if we want to make you loopy we can just tickle you. • If you have three days, weeks, or even months to live I will be on an airplane. • I've been thinking of doing a 'living' estate sale, pick up stakes and start life over somewhere else. Maybe set up a new identity 😂. But estate sales take a chunk of the profits, a real bummer. • I wonder if a technology museum would want to set up a wing devoted to your collection... I mean, why wouldn't they? I thoroughly enjoy Patreon exclusives, as you know. Take care. 🤍 EDIT: I made a fake car of my own design a while back: https://ibb.co/bgKgH7qD

To your question about how to handle your things, should you not have long to live, so in some countries, then you pass away, the authorities will appoint an executor to handle all that. Now they are normally lawyers, so you could ask one, how they go about selling stuff that is given to them as part of their job of being an executor of someone…..

D
Duncan · May 5, 2025

Unless specified otherwise, an Executor will appoint a house clearance company. They actually charge to take the stuff away although you can guarantee they will be checking the value of each item on eBay. A local one had several letters in the window praising their wonderful service then adding enclosed is my payment for ..... Of course the people who were so pleased were the ones about to be told by an estate agent that the house / flat they had also inherited was worth £400000.

The best article about passing on collections I have found https://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=5850.0 Replace the word phone with Walkman and you get the idea. Regarding Auctions I think you underestimate how famed "The Techmoan Collection" is. I'm sure "As reviewed by Techmoan" would increase prices while there would so much stuff people would be prepared to travel from far and wide. Personally I have had quite a lot of experience in disposing of collections hence looking before. I will admit that selling my late Fathers toy collection piece on eBay took far too much time and effort although did raise a significant five figure sum. Eventually I found a Toy museum which sells stuff on commission. Three car loads have gone there. At the local Amateur Radio club we have sometimes been asked to clear the shacks of people who weren't even in our club. However, that rarely gets into four figures, although with one club member it took four people four evening to clear his stuff.

I suspect the holding a lav mic trend is a natural extension of people using the mic on apple's earpods and getting better audio by holding it closer than it would normally sit. Those same creators have moved onto better equipment but held on to old habits/people emulating creators they've seen who've done it. There's also the whole "all publicity is good publicity" idea given that social platforms are centered around engagement and even though someone is commenting to complain, they're still commenting and the algo will (typically) reward that.
