July 2024 Patreon Exclusive Oddcast
Here’s my July 2024 Patreon update. I haven’t uploaded an audio-only version this time as a good proportion of this one is reliant on the accompanying visuals.
It’s a long one so be sure to utilise the chapters if you want to skip a section.

Oh and I feel I should mention that while I enjoyed my recent short break, I don’t intend to promote cruises. I'm really not a fan of the industry and I don’t plan on going on more cruises for numerous reasons, but I'm not the only person in the household - so we'll see. Regardless, here’s the finished shortened video I made about a cabin with an unusually large balcony.

Hello. I'm wondering, two years later, if you still use and like the product you used in the video "Ultrasonic Vinyl Record Cleaning - with the HumminGuru". It wasn't perfect, but maybe it was for that only record you tried on that video. Curiosity. Thanks!
I didn’t use it after the video - it was too much faff for me. I’m also very limited for space. I went back to a cloth and a spray.
Everyone loves a salty sausage.
I think people have always been dumb on YouTube. There's just something that happens when they enter the site; all higher brain functions cease. When I was teaching HS informatics, I always had my students watch a video by Tom Scott, where he outlines this dystopian scenario caused by social media, resulting in a riot and death. Each time I would preface the video by saying that it's a fictional scenario, Tom Scott also mentions clearly that it's a fictional scenario based on individual events that have happened, and I would again preface our class discussion by saying that it's a fictional scenario but could potentially happen for real at some point. The idea is to have a discussion about the dangers of blindly sharing other people's personal information online. And every single time, I'd have at least 4-5 students who were convinced that the entire thing was real. This never happened with any other topics, because they didn't involve YouTube videos.
That was a really great Oddcast, Matt! I particularly identified with the car specs points you made. I was resistant to automatic gear boxes years ago because, you know, real men change gears manually. Then about 20 years ago, due to a cock-up on an order for a lease vehicle, I was delivered an automatic car, which I had to keep for 3 years. I would say that after about one day, I realised that the car could change gear far more smoothly than I could, and I never went back to manual. Thanks and keep up the good work!
My first auto was a Smart, because they were all auto at that time. People were at pains to point out that it was an ‘automated manual’ not an ‘auto’ but that just told me those people were lost souls. Even though it wasn’t the best at changing gears, I liked the car taking this task away from me - and it’s been all auto cars for me since. Funny how now with electric and hybrid cars all the manual naysayers are being forced to embrace cars without a gear stick and I doubt few of them will mourn for the cramped leg experience of a manual in a traffic jam.
I would have loved to seen you with a rooftop aerial strapped to a rucksack out in a field.
So glad I watched this video today. We'll go for a 3 week USA trip in 2 days and when I saw you mentioning the DJI neck mount I went to panic mode because this is exactly what I need to film some hiking material in the national parks. Amazon says it'll arrive tomorrow. You probably saved me from holding a stupid selfy stick for way too long time.
Glad I could help.
"Better isn't going to happen" was my same conclusion about inkjet printers in an upcoming video.
'The Red Arrows are set to fly over parts of Lancashire prior to England’s Euro 2024 final against Spain' - you're apparently going to have some loud jets fly overhead this weekend 😳
I’ll keep an eye out.
Really enjoyable update, particularly the cruise section and the camera shots / videos. The outtake section amused, Denis Norden will be smiling down.
Nice to see the Eldorado title sequence on the screen throughout! (A show I'm currently watching and it certainly isn't as bad as its reputation suggests!) I took some photos on the iPhone of my drink high up overlooking the Austrian alps, and it came out terribly. No perspective at all sadly. I've suddenly unsubscribed to all the UK election channels now it's over! Hope all was well with the health scare last time.
Thanks, I’ve still a follow-up appointment in a couple of months, but so far it seems like it was probably nothing… this time.
I love Steve Marsh’s YouTube channel. Satisfies my desire to travel without leaving the couch. Going to Norway myself next week. My wife is Norwegian so I’m a regular visitor. Love it over there.
Same. Steve Marsh, PlanesTrainsEverything and Noel Philips. That does me nicely. Of course now YouTube has decided to clumsily throw every tom dick and harry travel Tuber in my face under the guise of "you may like this". Heaven forfend what would happen if I watched a recording of the Nuremburg rally for historical research purposes....
Glen at Glen and Friends, a channel that makes recipes out of old cookbooks, is another creator who I respect & enjoy nd he just released a video letting viewers know he'd be doing subtle product advertising going forward as a source of revenue. For example, he's currently wearing an apron with branding on it, or I assume he might in future use a particular variety of chef's knife. He's been in the game for a long time and said that it had become very difficult to make any revenue off of Youtube, even though Youtube has been the most consistent earner of all of the platforms he had been over over the years (He listed them... at least a half-dozen. Many long gone.) He mentioned Patreon in passing and said it didn't "work for him" without going into detail. The guy who runs Skeptics Guide to the Universe (a podcast with some YT content) said they's stick with Patreon for now "despite all the issues" because essentially podcasts have been an advertising since "Rona" visited in 2019/2020. He also declined to go into detail about the problems. But it sounds like that that in general creators can never really just "relax" and settle into focusing on content because the monetization models are shifting so often it becomes a full-time job just staying on top of the changes!
That was a very odd malfunction with your iPhone. It's a new one on me. I wonder what caused it? I have an iPhone 14 Pro in an Otterbox Fre case. I didn't pay the full £80 for it, but it's a good IP68 case and worth it when the phone cost over £1,000.
Paying £25 for a pdf reminded me of buying an Amstrad Emailer phone from ebay because I needed a photo for the conclusion of a PowerPoint presentation. Its completely useless, but I got the photograph.
possibly controversial, given the statements made on the quality and relevance of TouTube comments received..? In the US, 54% of adults have a literacy below a 6th-grade level (20% are below 5th-grade level). https://www.thenationalliteracyinstitute.com/post/literacy-statistics-2024-2025-where-we-are-now#:~:text=On%20average%2C%2079%25%20of%20U.S.,to%202.2%20trillion%20per%20year. It's a little better in the UK but still troubling at 12-26% also being 'being functionally illiterate' depending on the home nation. https://literacytrust.org.uk/parents-and-families/adult-literacy/
and they’ve all got a smartphone.
Is anyone else queasy about being asked what your "choice of protein" is at a restaurant? It's such a weirdly clinical genericism to use. "And which of our liquids would you prefer to slucie down our slop with?"
"and for desert, what choice of ultra-processed carbohydrates would you like to poison your body with today?"...!
YouTube commenters stating the obvious… I fear I've fallen into this trap more than once myself. I have to admit that commenting is part of the experience for me, like a bird that chirps along because it wants to be part of the flock (as daft as it sounds). A strange mix of wanting to contribute and be helpful, when in reality one is always on the verge of giving more or less unsolicited advice. It helps to remind myself from time to time that it's not easy to tell you something new ;-) I really enjoyed the clips from the cruise. I've been immersed in work over the last few months, so I've been cooped up in my home office for quite a while. So even a blue bar on top of another blue bar would be a welcome change of scenery. Scandinavia as a holiday destination would indeed be worth considering, hmm...
Auto Shenanigans is excellent. I wasn't aware that John has a Patreon, subscribed!
Hi Mat, This is great, I really enjoy these. I hope you keep doing them. I have a question about something I saw a few videos back. You were fixing some device that took a strange battery, about the size of a AA but flat on one side and rounded on the other. It might have been an MD player. Since you didn't have the correct battery type you had a 3D printed holder that would take a regular AA. Where did you get that? My google fu is weak and I can't find one. Love your channel, thanks! Chris
That was this https://youtu.be/eZHYoBWjEdg?si=1a6WG3Qq_Gvl28Um&t=543 and it came from here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/mattshop12
I suspect the Face ID sensor is getting moisture that's causing the iPhone reboots. I've bought two with FaceID, and both have had that problem you describe after a year or so. In fact worse, because the restore didn't work (dreaded 4013 error). It ended up in an infinite boot loop that wouldn't restore, so a bricked phone. The solution is to open the phone and disconnect the Face ID sensor (replace it). Thinking now, drying it out with a hairdryer may be the solution. I suspect yours had this problem due to sea air or the like (certainly a change in the normal environment), and it may have dried out by the time you got home. I made a quick video a few years ago describing the solution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nSLiKGbM7M
I’ve got a repair plan, so swapping it out would have been a possibility, but a hassle. But that wouldn’t help with the lost photos and videos, but more importantly to me at the time, I didn’t constantly know what my blood glucose reading was while driving home. Without the Bluetooth phone app connection it necessitated pulling over and doing a blood prick test.
I should get one of those JCV players.
The PVC VPCV777 is a good one.
Great update. Re cars currently eying up the dogood zero (£5,000 electric car). I got into cruises last year my wife sd card corrupted in her camera but managed to get it back via recovery software.
'On the boat, you're not supposed to say boat but I've paid my money, so on my boat..." - Priceless!
Awesome scenery there in Norge, would love to go on a trip there, but I'm not too keen on long-distance travel these days so it's great to get those experiences vicariously by watching Mat's videos. In 1990 while on vacation in the UK I tried to book a rail trip from there to Bergen, Norway, but decided against it when I realized the travel time would eat up too much of the time left on my vacation. Maybe going by sea would have been quicker, but IIRC was too costly. Oh well, I got to make two trips across the channel--one via ferry and one via hydrofoil (really wanted to take a hovercraft, but that didn't work for the planned itinerary).
I've been in Flåm, but I arrived from land. We hiked from the train line between Bergen and Oslo up there. It is quite impressive to be on the village when cruise ships arrive but the fjords are beautiful. I hope I'll be able to hike there again when the kids are a little older
I don't know how much anyone here relates, but it seems you're on your way to become the British Steve1989 I do have some emergency food, either in retort pouches or freeze dried or also good old cans. I can send you some rations if you want. There is this Spanish company which does really acceptable stuff for what it is, Jomimpsa I believe. But the coffee is ridiculously bad..
I’m watching this with headphones on while on my lunch break at a pizza place next to my work. Unbelievably, as you got to the analogy of dropping your pizza on the floor, the toddler at a table next to me did just that.
• The 'Gently shake for 10 seconds' demo had me rolling, thank you. • Your still photo technique is exceptional - it's very genuine for an experience, because people see that a picture is being taken and their demeanor changes. • I like your fish shirt. • Wait, I thought that you said another sinus surgery might put you at risk of losing sight in your other eye? 😔 • Dance party on the balcony? • Band vs. Banned - they must be the same people who interchange 'your and you're' and 'their and they're' improperly. • Did you know that some Gen Z/Gen Alpha don't know how to read the time on analog clocks? 😒 • Thanks for showing us the cabin layout. I've never been in a ship or boat of any kind, unless you count water-based amusement park rides. • The Solent Fort is really cool; as is the ferry loading and unloading. Your car game is so adorable. • How did you get on with the e-bike? I've been considering getting one. • Insurance companies and having fun: that's what I was all about, and the company I worked for used to have 'We have fun' in their principles. Well, they removed that in 2022 and I no longer work there. • I just subscribed to Trade Plate Travels as it sounds exactly up my alley/street; thanks. On that note, thank you for an enjoyable hour+ and take care. 🤍
+1 on the shirt. We have an ECargo bike and it's fantastic.
Your pronunciation of Haugesund is quite good actually!
'Better doesn't happen any more'. That's cheered me up no end 😂
There’s a Sony ZV-E10II announcement tomorrow and I’m just waiting to hear what features they’ve removed, which ones they’ve failed to improve and how much more it’s going to cost compared to the last one.
19:24 is that an atomiser, a humidifier or a heater for respiratory tinctures? I have a special cup for boiling water and Olbas oil or Vicks but this looks way more fancy. GoPro have dropped the ball on quality and usability. DJI picked that ball up.
It’s one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07ZC4C8BC/ it takes about 5 or so minutes before it starts producing steam, but unfortunately it seems steam doesn’t help my situation as much as I’d hope.
Just my luck, as soon as I posted this, Patreon went on the blink. https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/patreon I assume it was caused by a massive flood of clicks on this post.
Always love a Techmoan travel video with some travel tech.
