Woojer? Wooj-nah!

A short video this week - but it’s more than enough time to cover this simple gadget I’ve been testing…The Woojer.

https://youtu.be/ALQ8DbcMuiY

For one reason and another I’ve had limited days available for making videos this week. The ideal opportunity then to shoot something quick and easy - but unfortunately not necessarily good.

It’s a Bank Holiday Monday tomorrow, which means it'll be raining and I'll be stuck in the house with the Mrs who will be going stir crazy and finding countless unpleasant jobs that need doing.

I should be able to get back to making ‘content’ on Tuesday, but I’ll be breaking off for an hour to watch the Apple iPad event. The Mrs is due a new iPad as her ancient one has a cracked screen. It could end up being an expensive afternoon.

As for the videos I think I should return to a familiar retro device next time as the new stuff invariably proves to be disappointing.

Take care and enjoy your week.

'Shaken but not stirred' - is that a new thumbnail, or did I previously miss the brilliance of it?

T
Techmoan · May 11, 2024

It came to me this morning in the shower. I thought the original version was a bit too cryptic as to what the thing did. I first thought of ‘Neither shaken, nor stirred’ - but it turned out after doing a search that this is the name of Sean Connery’s autobiography.

This product has been WAF tested. Result : "Is that all it does?" 1 star.

I feel they could have done the same thing with a phone app and a cheap strap. What even is the point of this thing?

About the part at the end: I say, but look at all the anticipatory enjoyment you will receive waiting those 10 years for your butt kicking vibrating chair even if it ultimately disappoints.

Tape it to the underside of a table and you've got yourself a Woojer board. "Is there anybody there?"

Alistair Boyer · May 7, 2024

For some reason when I saw the image of where you can wear it my mind immediately went to wearing as many of these as possible

I think there are some TVs that can simultaneously output audio via bluetooth and another way, but that's more planning effort to use this thing than it really deserves. I often look at your emptied desk in the background, and wonder if today is the day we'll see Catmoan sleeping there and refusing to move on.

Doesn't kick your butt really...

I hope your chore day has successfully concluded with little to no bodily aches and pains 🤕

Surprisingly the weather was decent…so I washed the car.

I can’t wait for the tech moan vibrating cushion kickstarter 😂

It very well could be a best seller if aimed at the right demographic 🤔

As a single bloke, Laundry Man would truly be the best Superhero to me. Followed closely by Vacuum Lad.

I need laundryman. I've tried with subtle piles of colour-sorted laundry

Hmm well it’s a bank holiday and it’s not raining here but the Mrs has assigned me gardening jobs …

R
Raul Ramos · May 6, 2024

I very much doubt it has enough effective mass to transmit a rumble and the vest looks like "we can do worse, for a price" My subwoofer died and it makes me sad.

Dead Prez "Hip Hop", excellent choice to test bass. I've certainly annoyed my neighbours a few times with it

This would a _killer_ accessory for every AAA game that has a side-mission where you have to kill time at a restaurant's bar until your table is ready.

For Mrs. Techmoan, the best iPad is a refurb M1 iPad Pro-- not the latest and greatest but more than enough. Even a refurb 2019 iPad Pro has more than enough power and at half the price of the latest.

Techmoan · May 6, 2024

I’m aiming to get the new larger screen non pro but with base specs. Hopefully it’ll also have a couple of tweaks to the design.

Hah! I was working for the creative agency that did branding work for Woojer before they launched. I think we even came up with the name. I remember not being overly impressed with their vest when they brought the prototype in to our office. But it's a cute concept. Probably better for gaming rather than anything else, as you said in the video.

About 10 years ago I bought a Sinus Live Bass Pump III, removed the staples from the underside of my sofa and screwed it to some wood inside before stapling the material back in underneath. I wired it straight to one of the 2 bass outputs on my surround sound amplifier and said nothing to the Misses. It didn't take her long to notice but it took her ages to ask what was going on.

It's no Bone Fone.

I had a Toyota Carib in New Zealand that had a sub-woofer in the upright of the front seats so you could turn it on for extra bass vibrations in you back. It was weird.

Seeing most of my viewing is old knackered 1970s BBC sitcoms, this possibly isn't for me. 😀

Speaking of immersion; I’ve been looking into Govee lighting. Behind the screen lights that correspond to the image of the screen. Makes the wall seem part of the action.

The Woojers, especially the vests are very popular in the VR rave/party community. There are probably a lot more more people using them for music than for movies, just not outside. When using a PC of course the problem with the sound going to a different place isn't an issue, because you can use various software to mirror the output to multiple devices (such as in VR with SteamVR audio monitoring). As for the cushion: Not a cushion, but the Subpac thing can be strapped to a chair. And there used to be a commercially sold bass cushion called the "Aura Interactor Cushion".

When you were talking about how it doesn't make your whole body vibrate, it made me think of the AffloVest, something I use every day. It's a vibrating "airway clearance" vest that helps clear chest congestion for people with lung problems. It also apparently costs thousands of dollars (I don't know exactly how much because thankfully my insurance covered my vest in full). Then you showed the Woojer vest. I wonder if it could be a cheap alternative for people who can't get ahold of a proper airway clearance vest. I can't imagine a lot of people wanting to wear the Woojer vest just to feel vibrations linked to movie audio, but there could be a whole untapped market for the same device.

Many years ago, a friend of mine built a (crude) kind of DIY version of the buttkicker, integrated directly into an old sofa [1]. We had fun with it for a while in our clubhouse, but at some point the sofa fell apart due to its age. Fun times. It's a shame that the Woojer is so disappointing. Especially with a one-trick pony, at least this one trick should be convincing. In any case, it has RGB lighting! I'm not really a superhero film fan, but I would definitely watch the adventures of Tony Scarf. [1] https://gallery.ctdo.de/picture.php?/1122/category/6

Mat, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Most Sofas are basically an empty box underneath. I wonder if anyone has tried putting a sub-woofer inside a sofa. The ones some people put in cars can vibrate your whole body from about 10 metres / yards.

• Oh no - don't work too hard on your 'Honey Do List' day. Avoid cleaning the garage, pressure-washing the brick retaining wall, and trimming the hedges. • I've never had a tablet before - maybe I should invest in one. • I'm sorry, but the Woojer reminds me of the Mueller Exercise Belt: https://youtu.be/0UIJWcog65k • That is a huge steam iron 😯 - I thought of Iron Man before you showed it. Laundry Man sounds interesting, though, you should start a graphic novel. • I found your YouTube doppelganger (not exactly) on the channel 'Dr. G Explains' https://ibb.co/j4ZNC5j • How does Bees Knees like the Woojer, or does he even notice it? Enjoy the Apple release; take care 🤍 🤍

I do almost all my internet browsing on an iPad. Any website screenshots used in the videos are grabbed using one. On the other hand I almost never use a phone to do anything other than run a handful of apps and pay for things. I can’t stand trying to access the web on one. The Mrs did ask if the belt was some kind of exercise device. That doppelganger is very close, I did think it was me for a brief second. I’ve never worn the belt with the cat nearby and I think the chance of that happening has passed now as it’s another device I won’t be using again. I might try and offload it on a nephew.

You know, if you have to order a new ipad for her, might as well do a video from your viewpoint on the device. It not retro, but would make a fun video.

T

I think the Apple stuff is covered to death by people a lot more invested and knowledgable than myself. I’ve always had an iPad since the very first one and use it daily, but it’s a bit like my shoes, I need them, I use them, but I can’t tell you anything interesting about them.
