Alchemist Class (Replacing Cleric)

Alchemists are a Support Tank class that can create a variety of useful potions, both in-combat and out of it. There’s always a small chance of them exploding, dealing damage to everyone around them, but there’s an equal chance of each potion being super potent!

I’ll be replacing the Cleric class with these cheerful little burn victims. Folks know I’ve been struggling to make the Cleric class feel right since its inception, and ultimately it was in the game “because D&D has it”.

But the Cleric class has so many narrative implications for lore that are really jamming me up creatively. Pantheons, realms, religious organisations, purloined morality structures, zealots and heretics, et cetera. When it’s done well it’s really fun, but when it’s half-arsed, it’s really obvious, and it’s not the kind of writing I like to do.

There’s still the New Gods, the Moonthings, the Paladin Order, the various Blood Cults, and so on, but active worshipping of the gods through congregation and listening to some sexless old git read a book doesn’t feel like something Mundainians would indulge in.

Whyre all the comments about clerics? They already posted that they're keeping them?

Hes so cute

Is Rezmi getting an update for that then?

Always prefered the old tentacle cleric concept... Clerics being hobo hoarders never clicked with me. Alchemist on the other hand Could be an intersting concept

Ninja Master · October 5, 2026

Most of those cleric implications are optional, you already have a pantheon, afterlives, the rest you can do in typical Mundainian fashion as disorganised and individual as possible with the obsessive fangirl/boy/yes/no/whatever angle. Then organizations are lokal fan meetups, zealots and heretics is fandom drama, etc . Also as another idea, what if you drop the name and call them something else if the name's associations are a problem.

I think this is the most heavily armored character you've drawn recently

I love that all your environments have graffiti or grime.

How to do they draw that sword?

D

Now I'm curious what will happen to nerdy cleric and her goblin fighter boyfriend/fuck buddy.

I liked the old Cleric class with the tentacles, perhaps mundainian clerics should be more like that. Not sexless gits reading books but multitentacled sex cult leaders.

You could keep both and have clerics be buff support and alchemists be debuffers. Or have alchemists boost people's damage whereas clerics heal. Lots of ways to fulfill support fantasy. And as others said, look up pagan priests of party gods, they did radical stuff as worship

S
Son Of Anubis · October 5, 2026

Oh no!!! He came down with a terrible case of explosions

S
Silibus · October 5, 2026

Hard disagree on totally removing Clerics. I liked the superfan concept that's totally unique to V&V. To me, the clerics here are just mimicing their heroes so hard that fantasy becomes reality. Also, doesn't the existence of the Paladin class also share all those same narrative implications?

I love the idea of alchemists being proficient in heavy armor because like, bomb disposal armor.

Here’s a fun idea… Becoming a Cleric of Tali Mori could involve sacrificing your ability to be fully revived in exchange for becoming a being that exists between life and afterlife, one that freely travels between the two at her behest to attend to affairs of her interest. In-game, they could be a supped-up Ghost with a plethora of new and/or improved abilities, such as natural access and improved ease of use to death-related magics, improved possession abilities, being able to act as psychopomps to guide the dead and undead to Tali Mori’s great hereafter(s), etc…

I saw clerics as like, members of a fanclub. Or like people who go to conventions. They are just like, super hyped about these stories and random crap someone made. When they group together it's just people showing off crap they made, or bought, or enjoying what they like together. Would be less of a religion kind of worship and more like, "Yeah I think Gap'r is super cool, he throws the wildest sex parties." and arguments over which god is better is like watching people argue over which of their favorite tv show character is better.

Clerics would work better as cultists in your current setting, but cultist activity is pretty thuroughly covered by blood magic and vampires, so that's already fleshed out enough. The fanatics angle you had last time was great, but its true that the class aspect of hording holy items felt like it was shoehorned in, or that something was missing. (40k orcs came to mind) I'm super excited to see how you make your alchemist, since i designed my own earlier this year based on your faeling and alchemist tower lore, and that was a ton of fun to put together.

Amazing, I love this class type. And I want to top that guy which is a huge compliment as I didn't think I was bi or gay.

Classes that could fit what a cleric is without being what comes to mind when someone thinks of a Cleric, never mind that Gods that lean into hedonism also tend to have clerics of some kind, there's also shaman, spirituslists, priests/priestesses (who generally exist just to officiate worship related ceremonies and teach, not so much to evangelize), oracles/prophets and stuff like that and some of them might fit your world better. Honestly an Oracle or a shaman sounds a bit more like what you would want to feature in this world. Especially if paladins still exist.

This bit from the Forgotten Realms Wiki comes to mind: "In Amn, the Church of Sune (Goddess of beauty) and that of Sharess (goddess of hedonism and lust) published and distributed chapbooks containing goddess-oriented erotica." And they run the festhalls instead of having temples (Festhalls being the family-friendly word TSR put in over all the brothel locations on the Forgotten Realms city maps).

Clerics don't have to be the priests we know today. Bacchus also had priests. They knew how to throw a party.

S
Sinistral Storm · October 4, 2026

i love it! this is exactly the kind of play style i gravitate towards in any game that has it! also i notice gaz was here, this is the first time i've noticed multiple background graffiti/tags that can be attributed to the same person, if that's gazrin gutspiller

Does this change anything about Rezmi and Grift's continuity stuff? If not, then I'm cool with it. I love the two of them.

I think its ok.as a new class getting rid of classes is not as fun its better to have a variety then a a focus of classes

Awww, I'm sad to see my character's class go away. I had lots of fun being a crazy fanboy.

C
Commissar Doggo · October 4, 2026

Whenever an Alchemist's potion is used, roll 2d20. If it is a 4 or less, the potion explodes instead of its intended effect. If it was an explosion potion, double its damage.

S

Nothing says you can't do the hedge saint thing where someone has a personal relationship with their deity and either camps in the wilderness to try to comprehend divinity better/avoid people or wanders around doing what they are completely, unshakably sure is the Right Thing. (Even if everyone else is going "$name is not a real god!" at them.) It makes clerics a terrible party-member sort of class but sometimes a useful person to know. (Or, for the person running the game, a really handy person to have as an NPC.)

S
Sean · October 4, 2026

Clerics as something like Paladins would be a good fix - more power but you have to actually engage with your God and what they want

G
GedynRai · October 4, 2026

I love this idea ❤️ Alchemist are rarely a base class in rpgs, ao this should be fun. I think it would fine to tackle the cleric idea later on. It could still work with the setting, I'd just try approaching with a different idea of a priest (something less abrahamic).

A
Andi Platts · October 4, 2026

Aye, would it be possible to at least keep all the items as mentioned in the Cleric class description, as a "holy relic" item class? Feels like they could still be utilised while keeping with your intended lore for adventurers.

J
Jeffery Magee · October 4, 2026

Perhaps a fan could be used as an outsource, like woth DnD using certain particular homebrew classes and making them apart of th official collection, this is still TTRPG, if a fan comes up with the writing, mechanics, and aesthetic application with the setting, then I would encourage you to consider including it if offered.

Why would churches be boring in mundain. They’re more like festivals. Think of clerics more like the carnies of the world. They’re delivering the good word while sucking and fucking in the name of their pantheons or devotions!

B
Brandon Guzman · October 4, 2026

You could remake the whole “Cleric” thing as a foil to becoming a Warlock… Through the chance or invoked attention of one New Gods, perhaps by engaging in actions within their respective domains? You could have the Cleric and Warlock sub-classes be mutually exclusive to one another, with each having their own advantages, disadvantages, and nuances.

N
Ninja Master · October 5, 2026

The other side of the coin, instead of being picked out by an entity they are desperately trying to catch their attention, instead of being slowly shaped by their concepts, they shape themselves to their perceived identity...

Easier to justify them as crazy people who don't believe in a unified pantheon but are more like street corner soapbox THE END IS NIGH loonies
