I really like the tone and look to this first episode, seams like it's going to be an original take on these classic characters. I usually stay away from TV and film that has storylines with Vampires due to being campy or devolving into silliness, prolly why I steered clear of this when it originally aired. Great performances from Vanessa Ives and Dr. Frankenstein actors, I'm definitely going to be looking forward to seeing their character arcs unfold. I can't help but think that Ethan Chandler was miscast. I thought the modern american accent dipping in and out was a bit distracting, kinda took me out of it a bit. Hopefully he becomes more natural in his delivery and to the interplay with the rest of the cast in future episodes, it will be interesting to see where his story goes and with the reveal of his true self. I think the introduction of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs to the kidnap story line piqued my interest most of all, I'm a sucker for stories with ancient Egypt mysteries. It will be tough not binge this one :)
I agree about the tone! I think it's always difficult for shows to utilize classic characters because people have so many preconceptions about them and there'll always be iconic performances that they'll be compared to at some point. But I like what they've done so far! I was a bit curious about Josh Hartnett as well. I haven't really seen him in anything this meaty before but here's hoping he can pull it off and stand his own with the other actors! I actually am very similar when it comes to vampire stories and television shows! While Dracula is, of course, iconic, I also am a big fan of Stephen King's books. As a very young girl, I read Salem's Lot for the first time and that largely shaped how I view vampires in popular culture. Now there are just too many poor quality stories out there that center around vampires, especially among Y.A. material :/ I also agree that the addition of the hieroglyphics really made this even more interesting. It was literally ON its skin underneath that exo-skeleton! How?!!! lol
I can't say much after just the 1st ep but this is kinda a part one, ep2 we are introduced to more of the main cast. There are a few obvious things in this ep, they needed to make it easy for viewers not aware of the Penny Dreadful history. But don't fear there are many twist and turns ahead. Lol they are people shaped by their past(which we will find out about) trying to fight their way through the darkness., I wouldn't say any of them are "good" people but they are fascinating!! I'm sure you'll pick up alot of things quicker than most, the hints are there for anyone familiar with classic/iconic monsters. John Logan (creator and wrote the entire series) weaves his own story around this era, the different classes, exploitation, sexism, racism ect..and uses these iconic characters to tell the story. I'll let you know when I hear back from Sith. Thanks Molly <3
I really enjoyed the first episode! And honestly, even though the Frankenstein reveal wasn't a surprise to me, I liked the way it was done. I feel as though a lot of television shows struggle with introducing characters in opening episodes (especially if some of the characters are also well known) but they did an excellent job with that here. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how the show progresses going forward. It seems like they managed to get a lot of material into one episode, so, if it is like this most of the time, I imagine there will be a lot to sink my teeth into!
