The point that you are missing is MV&BC that relates to the ability to get hits! Documented ranges from WW-I= 250', WW-II=250 Yards, Korea=750 Yards! After Korea, the ranges got longer. Lately, much longer. Thus, the reduction from 30 to 27 MM in Europe and the American use of EXTREAMLY exotic propellent to get EXTREAMLY HIGH MV, 1,525 M/S, and more pointed shells to get more BC. All to get a significant increase in chance to hit! Reply @neoconshooter @neoconshooter 1 month ago Forth comment, The F-8 Crusader used the Colt Mk-12 Gun, IIRC! It had an eleven-chamber revolver gun with two barrels with one feed, and fired 4,200 rounds per minute, again, IIRC, total 8,400 Rounds per minute for the plane! They were mounted vertically in the sides of the inlet duct and had about 200 Rounds per gun, IIRC. The round used the same old cartridge case of the Hispano gun, but with a new, more pointed, projectile of only 110 Grams mass. Again, IIRC! If you buy a 20 MM dummy round for your collection, you can tell the difference between the two projectiles because the Navy ammo was more pointed than the AF stuff. Lastly, maybe, there was a new program to "Improve" the Vulcan gun after they cut the new "Caseless" 25 MM UBER gun from the F-22 program. The new 20 MM ammo had the same footprint as the M-50 Family of shells that the Vulcan guns all took, but the shell was much more pointed, and massed only 84 Grams instead of the nominal 101-102 grams. The Propellent was made from "Moderated" RDX high explosive instead of nitrocellulose to get the maximum velocity from the new longer barrels! 1,525 M/S instead of 1,036 M/S from the standard ammo! That, and an increase in the Rate of Fire to 7,200 Rounds per minute made it over 100% more effective in Combat A2A than the old gun used in every other American Plane! PS. Statistics show that the rate of A2A kills with the various larger caliber, but lower MV guns went down in comp to the Vulcan gun since Korea! Reply @neoconshooter @neoconshooter 1 month ago Third comment: At ~58:02 I froze the movie and read that chart and then realized that the M-3's .50" ammo had a much higher MV Than the Standard .50 Caliber ammo used during WW-II! (PS. I thought that they started using the new hotter ammo in mid to late 1944.) Some allied planes made in the last half of 1944 did have the M-3 .50" Caliber guns installed, my uncle had one, a P-38L!) All of the previous comments can be summed up in the following Project Development History of the "Project Vulcan" 20 MM Rotary Gatling Gun! Gave up shell Mass to Get Higher MV. Made the shell much more pointed to increase the BC, and reduced the weight of the explosive content of the shell to just over half of the content of the German "Mine Shell"! To make the fewer but larger fragments more damaging! Use the Gatling Gun Principle to increase the rate of fire. My uncle was told to keep his burst of fire to under four seconds if he could, to prevent rapid BBL wear.

Have you come across the differences between the AN-M2 and the M2 in these firearm heavy videos? I have an M2 that I think is an AN, but I’m not sure. It was set up as an anti aircraft gun after being used on Iwo Jima. It’s a subtle difference that was mostly rate of fire. I’m not sure how they changed the barrels though, which they likely made considerably lighter.
