Poll for next video.
At the end of my recent Dora Gyro gunsight video I put a couple pages up from an Allied report on damage from aircraft weaponry. They shot up dozens of B-25s and P-47 and hundreds of engines to do a detailed statistical analysis of the odd of shooting down a plane with a given number of hits from various weapons. You can see two of the pages at the end of that video to get an idea what the report is all about. So the next video will be that, or a report on the Soviet IL2.

I voted on damage but both are great topics, especially as the IL2 evolved
Yes to both. I recommend you choose the one you want to do.
Both pretty please.
The IL-2 is rather fab - not least in that it looks so awesome, more like a fighter than a ground-attack plane. But I'm particularly fascinated by WW II aircraft guns & their toxic effects, so I'm gratified that it looks like that's going to be Greg's next subject.
Both would be great ideas actually so for me it would be the damage-report first, but not to NOT do the IL-2 then :D
This feels like opening the fridge and finding two great options for dinner. Choose one for tonight and hopefully the other will still be there for tomorrow.
One topic which has not been covered are the operational techniques to extend range of fighters. Also to address the associated air speeds. Ferrying planes to the European theater was a major mean of getting them there which might be an interesting video topic as well. I always look forward to your interesting and informative videos. THANKS !! Bruce
Either would be great, but I'd prefer the damage video first because it' sound as if it's a really different angle, and universally applicable.
Due to survivor bias I wonder how incisive the damage report can be. But, the iL2 was both one of the most produced aircraft of WWII and one of the most significant. There seems to be little well researched info available in the English speaking world. iL2 please please.
My memory may not be serving me well as I am recounting a short email conversation that I had about 30 years ago with a person who was on a Mercedes Benz Use Group. I had mentioned that my father was a B-17 pilot and had an appreciation for German engineering and ingenuity in part from seeing things such as the ME-262. This person wrote me because his father flew an ME-109 in the war. (BTW: My father always said ME-109 and never Bf-109). I wish I could remember more of what he wrote but his father gave him quite a few details about the preparation for attacking B-17s and I believe he said that the German pilots were told it would normally require nine 20mm hits to take down a B-17. Again, my memory may be off but the weapons report would be interesting to me.
Interesting, I am also curious about the British early war use of .303 machine guns in its bombers and fighters. Were rifle caliber bullets really effective in shooting down aircraft?
I've always been particularly interested in the *mechanisms* by which various guns would shoot down a plane. - Engine damage vs. structural damage vs. fire vs. other systems vs. aircrew injury vs. whatever else. - Do small (contact detonating) explosive shells have different effects from large (non-contact heavy AA) explosive shells? - Do heavy MGs destroy things differently from auto cannon? - Why did rifle-caliber machine guns lose effectiveness as the war went on? I hope at least some of these questions are covered.
Whatever you feel like making is fine by me. I'd prefer the IL-2 but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in the damage reports either. All the videos are interesting and informative.
The understanding brought to me by Greg’s presentations is satisfying, and allows me a wider experience of these flying machines. These presentations are not just a dalliance on u tube, but an educational experience. I am going to vote for the damage presentation this time because the offer of ballistic analysis has me fascinated.
I’m really hoping this is for which one we get first because both sound interesting
I'm voting for the damage report. I'm curious about what Greg is going to dig up on the IL-2, perhaps that like just about everything that came out of the Soviet Union was a propaganda lie? (numbers built perhaps?🤔)
It’s disappointing that one of the most important—and the most numerous—fighting aircraft of WW2 will apparently lose the poll. I hope it gets a video down the line somewhere.
I’m happy with either video. I feel like the IL2 is famous, but an unknown quantity, if that makes sense.
"… IL2 is famous, but an unknown quantity, if that makes sense." It does, and that’s why the IL2 deserves this channel’s special attention.
Oof I am in the small minority looking for some IL2 action.
Now there's two of us...
