Yet another response video, sort of
I'm putting up a video with a 1000 dollar challenge which I don't think anyone will ever win. I'm tired of all these channels saying that Whitehead, or whoever invented the airplane. It's not true.
I plan to focus on adverse yaw. None of the pretenders to the throne identified it let alone solved it. The Wrights discovered it because they were the first to use a real control system thus the first to run into the problem.
I'm going to offer a reward to anyone that can prove that someone before the Wrights understood the concept of adverse yaw and what to do about it. Without that understanding, an airplane as we know it is impossible.
By using the Wright's diaries and patent I can prove that they absolutely did understand it, I even have the date they figured it out. It's all coming in a video soon.

The guys could, if they wished, fly DCS and buy the modules (if they are available) for the planes as you make the video.
I am a DCS World buff too and fly each of the planes as you make the videos. The guys should know that DCS is free to start and then you can buy the module for new planes as you wish.
That's a great point, it does come with a couple of free airplanes.
Good show, Greg. Your plan is good and should prove very entertaining. I look forward to some of your good clashes with the idiots. I was almost there. Born 1933 and raised on a Dept. of Commerce intermediate airfield. Field is the right word as it was a 4000 ft square grass field where they landed if they had weather or mechanical trouble. A bit later I flew for 64 years as a professional pilot. Now I fly this computer and enjoy your stuff.
Sorry, hit the wrong button. Greg, I decided to support your channel because I admire your work on man’s achievements with internal combustion and sheet metal, not because you’re willing to engage with idiots who credit people not named Wright with controlled powered heavier than air flight. If you go down this road, you’ll never stop, because the idiots won’t. I’d far rather read your thoughts on the FW-190 or the F6F.
John, it's way easier to make this quick video than it is to keep answering the avalanche of comments I get saying that Whitehead invented the airplane. I can't ignore this forever so I'm going to deal with it. I think you will like the video, if not, the next one will have quite a bit of Fw 190 stuff.
Greg, if you think that a well argued treatise on adverse yaw will convince anyone of anything, then I’ve seriously overestimated you. I have many hours in Cubs, and I have to tell you, you’re wasting your time.
It's more than just an explanation of adverse yaw. I don't call out misinformation every time I see it, but this one needs to be done judging from my comment section alone.
This is awesome. Keep up the good work! Your videos are the highlight of anything I consume at the moment.
Adam Savage once said "The difference between screwing around and science is writing it down." You can go to the Library of Congress's website and read reams of letters between Wilbur and Octave Chanute where they discuss the Wright's methodical discovery of flight in real time. The only other person who documented his work as well as the Wrigths was Otto Lilienthal and not solving the control problem killed him. The rest of the would-be contenders seem to be strangely quiet on documentation.
Exactly! Well put.
It has to be a powered, controlled ,and directional flight of a heavier than aircraft to count. I know of no other people to invent, build and fly one successful before the Wright brothers.
Love it when you get fired up! Go get em 🤗
Yeah. I don't get the whole "the Wright bros. weren't the first" thing. Usually, when I read that sort of thing it's clear that the writer doesn't have a clear definition of what the claim of building the first airplane actually is (ie; controlled directional flight) or they are simply making up stuff by deliberately misdefining the problem. Thanks Greg! One shouldn't have to argue the point at this late date, but it seems folks are bound and determined to accept all kinds of harebrained history these days.
I have a pretty serious scale R/C airplane addiction that could use a grand, but you’ve already pretty thoroughly convinced me about the Wright brothers in your propeller video. I didn’t really need convincing, as I pretty much figured that by now we would know if the Wrights weren’t the true originators of powered flight. Should be a fun video!
Sshhhhhh, everyone knows all things airplane were invented by the 19th century Russian theorist Ivan something something or was it the Chinese 6th dynasty mathematician Yan Ming.........? I forget sometimes what commie Marxist propaganda to believe😁
I’m looking forward to the video. And yes the Wright brothers’ journals are fascinating.
I think you’re right… no one will win your $1000. I was just trying to explain this to a community college class on introduction to aviation. Many can argue that others took powered leaps but the Wright Brothers invented the airplane because they solved the three main problems: thrust, lift and control. The big thing revolves around their three axis control system. This is what the Wright brothers developed on their own.
